Hi,
I have the MacBook Pro m1 with 16GB of RAM and 256GB storage.
The only thing that I do regret is that I was not buying the 1TB storage but I do manage by with 256GB as I do have iCloud 2TB and also I have an external SSD.

But I don't think that I'll update this year I have so much other things that I need to buy like AirPods Max, HomePod mini etc. to get everything to work as I want.

So my question for you is, what M1 device do you have and what spec. And will you update when a new one get's out?

I would need the following done to consider upgrading.

1. 15-16" air
2. Support for at least 2 external monitors on the air
3. A 5G sim card support so I can use my device on the go without needing wifi. I dont want to tether and kill my battery, and I dont want to carry a portable charger.

If 2 or more happen then yes I will upgrade.

Optional: Increase ram to 32gb

Yes. Looking forward to the RAM, core and size increase. Able to get rid of displaylink, I'd like my monitors at full color, nightshift and not eating cpu. Last but not least, magsafe and the removal of the touchbar. The macbook pro m1 has been absolutely stunning in its performance and stability so the new upgrade is a no-brainer for me.

I plan to upgrade my M1 mini to M1X with either 32 GB or 64 GB of RAM. I will give my M1 mini to my wife to replace her 2018 mini. I also plan a 16 inch M1X MacBook Pro with likely 32 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. I would actually be fine with an M1 MacBook 16 inches with 32 GB of RAM but I doubt that Apple will make something like this.

You need a maybe option in your poll. I may upgrade from my M1 MBA (16GB, 1TB), depending on the specs of whatever comes out. I want more RAM, active cooling, and a *much* better screen, but I don't want something too heavy. A 16" would be too heavy...

So, why do you need more RAM this year? Is it something that you need or just want? I guess that you have a Air as you are talking about active cooling as the MBP have it already.

Currently I have an M1 MacBook Air, the 8-core graphics model with 512 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM. So far it's often become my main computer, but I still do want a new desktop Mac to replace my 2012 quad-core i7 Mac Mini, so I'm hoping that by 2022 (the year I plan to buy said new Mac desktop) Apple will have come out with a higher-end M1X Mac Mini, or even the rumored Mac Pro Cube, and I will buy one of those to use as my main desktop at home. I only got the MacBook Air first as I needed a laptop that could run Mac OS 11 Big Sur and later and my existing laptop of the time was a late 2009 white MacBook that could only run up to Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra (and this was before I began collecting older Macs as a hobby!)

You would already be carrying a portable charger in the form of your laptop; regardless, you can get USB-C cellular modems so you can have this feature regardless of what Apple does.

Are you running ARM VMs? I run my VMs on a Windows box.
ARM VM's are the only thing that works well enough. I'm hoping for some decent x86 emulation eventually, but it's just not there yet. Need a faster processor for that too.

My Intel Mac Mini always run Windows VM's as a kind of server for me at home, and my real VM workhorse is a Windows desktop.

I know, I have other machines to do the VM work, but I do occasionally travel and I need a portable that can get the job done in a pinch. I wanted my MBA to be that machine.

I'm really looking forward to the possible miniLED screen and that will probably push me enough to upgrade, even if 16G is all the RAM it may have. (and the active cooling) That's kind of my priority list...

MBA 16GB 512GB. No.

If you get by with 256GB, why do you feel the need to get 1TB? Why not the 512GB?

No, I will not replace my M1 MBA. I’ve got the 8-core GPU/16GB/512GB model and it’s more than fast enough for my needs. Don’t need more ports. Size is good for mobility’s sake. Battery life is beyond sufficient.

Fix Big Sur’s issues and I’ll be satisfied for years to come.

On storage, I went with 512 and I checked how much I'm using and it's about 120 GB so 512 should be more than enough. I have a home NAS and that means that mobile devices and laptops don't need as much onboard storage. I might go with 1 TB on an M1X laptop. It's hard to tell because WFH has changed how I think but that won't last forever. An SD slot would also change the equation.

Because I want to bee safe for the future, My next laptop need to work for 3-5 years and my old one will go to my child. But I'll not get the 2021 MBP - I'll wait for the 2022 one.

Yes I will upgrade my M1 Mac Mini.

I was waiting for an M1X but then decided I could buy a base M1 Mini (8/256) just to test it out for a bit and then when an updated one comes out the 8/256 can become a media server attached to the TV or an additional Mac for tasks like video compression without impacting on the main machine.

That’s the reason I got the specs I did, I think that sounds like a good plan. Why didn’t you get the future proofing when you got the M1?

The only one in stock in Sweden was the 16/256GB or the 8/512GB and I need 16GB of RAM. And as I needed it for work badly as I was working from home.
And as I was going to operate my legg etc. my employer did not ofc pay for it. (our government are paying us for the sick leave so the employer are not loosing any money when we are going on sick leave)

I was either going on sick leave for 6-8 weeks with only 75% pay or I was buying it with my own money and work from home with it.
I was going to loose around 1700 Euro if I was not buying it.
So well, we can say that I did get it for free - almost anyway ;)

Nope, I have the basic air but its all i really need for a laptop and it handles my smaller logic pro projects without a hitch. I have a 3900x/2080ti windows machine that I use for most my needs anyway.

My household has a 2012 and late 2015 iMac, as well as a M1 MacMini. If the 2012 becomes totally outdated for our use, I would certainly look at an "M2" or whatever they call it. I just hope the "M2" have more ports, and perhaps more RAM. Yes, I'm greedy :p
