Getting a good old fashioned here in the SW is like trying to get a very good Manhattan in some bumble town in Alaska. I stick to more simple pours or more popular drinks. I'm not familiar with True Syrups, @D.T., but I imagine it would taste better than whatever I could whip up at home. I've tried ginger syrup in the past and it's always tasted off. Compare that to ginger preserves which is like eating a giant glob of The Ginger People candy. :D

Yesterday's alcohol didn't affect my heartburn but I ate something while I was up last night that caused it to sit in my chest near my throat for hours. I'm going to refrain until a diagnosis comes through. This has been an issue on and off for a few years and I'm getting tired of it.

What's a ginger beer like? I've never tried it. I've tried the root beers with alcohol and that smacks you in the face. I stopped drinking soda about 20-25 years ago and I used to like root beer or the actual sasparilla stuff.

The Root Beer beers are super sweet. Especially the offerings from "Not Your Fathers." To sweet for my tastes. Glad I was able to try it though.

Ginger beer is a must for Moscow Mules. Fever Tree makes a nice light one that is not too sweet. For me if the ginger beer is to sweet it takes away from the Moscow Mule flavoring and over all experience. There are a few places near me, mainly "320 On Main" in Seal Beach that makes some of the best out there IMHO. I don't drink it straight though.

Thanks, everyone. I'll wait until the weather warms up in the coming weeks or months before trying it out. I've got a lot of stuff I want to open up before it over-matures. @rhett7660 I see you on the root beer alcohol. Root beer soda was something I did enjoy from time to time back when I did consume soda. I can't remember what brand I bought in those days. @D.T. Your ginger-ale post had me awfully confused with the sugar water until I realized you were talking about the soda! I had a brain fart and thought you were talking about actual ginger flavored ale. So is a ginger beer like a radler minus the citrus but with ginger?

Edit: Probably A&W because that's what I remember being common and cold. I know Mug existed and something called Bart's which came out a few years ago?

Edit 2: The only soda we still buy are the Izze bottles and we keep those for guests. I've had some organic herbal sodas before but I don't recall the brand. It was "gourmet" soda or whatever it proclaimed to be. I haven't had an Izze in years. Though when I did indulge, I went for something citrus based.

An A & W root beer float is a good way to spend a hot afternoon.

In a coffee shop.
A wonderful French wine (Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah) accompanied tonight's dinner in an excellent restaurant, while I chose an aged and complex Riesling (think apricots) for dessert. Quite lovely.

Both I guess, health, avoiding getting into a habit, staying extra focused during the week.

Speaking of health, I am shutting down, killer workout tomorrow morning :)
Makes sense. Good night and have a good workout.

Had some Ardbeg earlier tonight and I've only just realized I wasn't supposed to have any alcohol for at least 30 days. Or the chocolate digestive I had an hour ago...

I can just about hear the coffee beans calling my name. Asking to be crushed between gears so they can thrive in hot water and I'm just kidding because I'm not insane. Not completely.

I have just opened a bottle of the legendary KBS from Founder's, pouring it into a Belgian beer chalice.

Very nice. I am waiting for this years batch to hit the shelves!

Had quite a few different beers this past weekend. Went to a cookie and beer pairing event at one of my local craft beer houses and I have to say it was actually really good:

Nitro Coffee Stout by Common Space Brewery paired with a coffee and pecan cookie
Big Bad Baptista Mexican Coffee Stout by Epic Brewing paired with a mexican chocolate and cream cookie
Frambuesa Negra by Dry River Brewing paired with a raspberry sugar cookie
Olas Espaciales (Mild sour) by Joly Pumpkin Artisan Ales paired with a lemon cookie

All were outstanding and hit the marks.

To end the night I had the following:

Broom of the System Stout by Concrete Jungle Brewing Project
Sparkle Muffin New England IPA

The Sparkle was very light in terms of hoppyness.

......

I'm just back from a period abroad and spotted some in my favourite delicatessen/off licence; tomorrow, I shall secure some of them, so that I shall have them to hand when desired/needed/dreamt of. If they will sell me a full crate, so much the better; otherwise, I shall simply secure as many as I can lay hands on.

Now, in fairness, there is already an unopened crate from my last leave - 12 beers, four from Founder's (KBS), and another four from Founder's (Breakfast Stout) topped off by four stunning stouts from the Buxton Brewery, the equally terrific Yellow Belly.

Holy smokes! Good luck with the purchase! I would like to get my hands on some of those Yellow Belly Stouts however it doesn't look like they are available in the states! Grrrr.

Haven't had luck finding a place that carries Buxton with regularity if they even carry them at all. I've been on the hunt for the gooseberry IPA since summer it seems.

If you like KBS, you will like Yellow Belly - it is an absolutely stunning stout.

I spotted the KBS today - I arrived home last night and went shopping for beers and cheeses this afternoon.

Now, I did say to the staff that I shall pay them a visit tomorrow with a view to securing/buying/paying for as many bottles of KBS as they will be prepared to sell to me. I should be able to get around a dozen or so, and will merrily snatch whatever else - or how many extra - they agree to sell to me.

The gooseberry IPA is stunning.
