From the bottle, and the glass, both, there is a serious whiff - or aroma - of kerosene; this is what the wine specialists argue is the mark a good Riesling.

I am sipping a glass of "Drs' Cut - O'Leary Walker" (a reserve Riesling from NZ).

Look at the color on this

Unholy Trippel by Coppertail Brewing.

Stellar, a little more hoppy than a "traditional" Tripel, starts with a very Belgian character, matly sweet, a little honey, then a big hit of citrus, dry finish. A stout 9% ABV but not boozy, this is from a local-ish Brewery down in Tampa (FL, USA), I've had a few of their products, all very solid.

Went to a beer festival in Long Beach over the weekend had a ton of good to great beers. Also had a few that missed the mark completely.

The majority of the breweries were all local or small in size with a few of the larger ones making an appearance. We ended the night at Ballast Point brewery where we took on a few more drinks before calling it a night some 13 hours later. Long day.

I have some friends that are ballast point fans. Thought they were out of San Diego. Didn’t know they had a location in Long Beach.

They started in San Diego and have branched out. They were purchased by one of the big beer companies for around three billion if I remember correctly which is why you are starting to see them everywhere now.

The Long Beach spot is pretty darn nice, I like it better than the San Diego spot only because it is larger and can accommodate larger groups, usually without any issues.

Ballast Point have crafted some excellent beers - I seem to recall an outstanding stout I encountered a while ago.

Most likely "Shipwrecked" which is the flagship stout. They have a quite a few different variations of it.

They were not at the festival, that is where we ended up afterwords. Probably wasn't a good idea given how much we had already consumed, but by that point, it all seemed like a good idea.

Rivesaltes Ambré AOP (2008), Maccabeu - Grenache gris from Pyrénées-Orientales. 17.5%.

had a pint of red trolley from Karl straus with lunch.

Since it is the season, or pretty darn close to it, my favorite Karl Straus beer is their version of an Octoberfest style beer. We have a few of their restaurants near us and have it had it over several different years and it hasn't disappointed. I don't know if they sell bottled as I have not seen it anywhere outside of the restaurant.

Not a big fan of the red trolly or their blond ale, but the Octoberfest, in my opinion is another story and we really like it a lot.

What is the Karl Strauss Oktoberfest beer actually like?

I'm not a big beer drinker, but it was ok. it was easy drinking and good enough to wash down a bacon cheeseburger. :) if anything, I guess it did lack some character.
