That looks to be a exciting combination, can you let me know how it tastes.

The Sculpin IPA is a great IPA, and the addition of habanero was certainly curious. I've had delicious Mexican beers with a squeeze of lime and a salt and chili rimmed glass, so I figured it could work.

Alone, just popping a bottle and sitting down with a book or my computer, it drank well, but there was a bit of a discord between the hops and the chili. However, then I made some mushroom tacos (oyster mushroom and bunashimeji with scallion and garlic) with a side of pico de gallo and some sliced avocado and the experience integrated quite nicely.

First off thank you for your quick response.
From what you are telling me, it sounds like a very good excuse, as if one was needed to make tacos, or would any Mexican food do?

Lordy. That actually made my mouth water :D

It definitely sounds like a "food beer" vs. a standalone sipper. I've had a few spicy drinks, and mostly have been so-so on them (though I love spicy food), however this one was pretty fantastic, it was a margarita with a chili based lime liqueur and a red chili rimmed glass. Might have been the magical location (Epcot @ Disney) or the fact that it was the first drink after a _long_ day :D

Ahh, now a well built spicy cocktail is something I don't have trouble drinking without food. :D

To be honest, I don't mind my lagers ice-cold in summer; the taste is not the issue, and their alcohol level is usually not terribly high. Besides, one tends to drink them fairly rapidly, too.

However, those rich, luscious, tasty (and alcoholic) dark beers are best at room temperature, so that they can be sipped and savoured, so that one can actually taste what one id drinking. The very best of them have incredibly layered and complex flavours, and putting them in the fridge merely renders them tasteless.

From what everyone has written about the Founder's Beers, they do sound as though they would be well worth tracking down. Yum. Shall try to see if I can lay my mitts on any of them…….Curmudgeon, mmmm, now, that is a name to roll off the tongue, and Dirty Bastard sounds fascinating, too.

I do like most of my beers cold or slightly chilled. There are very few that I will drink at room temperature. I like those just a little chilled, even if it is the glass and the beer room temperature, which is how I usually drink my big bold heavy flavored beers.

What a beautifully written post. Poetic, even, in a 'food for the gods' style of writing. Wonderful.

I must say that I like the way your mind works on these matters.

I suspect that any rich food that marries well with hops and can take a bit of chili would go splendidly.

Excellent. And - quite literally - one that offers some food for thought…..

I usually let the heavy, high abv/gravity, complex type beers warm up a bit before drinking out of the fridge or wine cooler. The flavors and complexity and booze just get so much better. Beers like Dogfish Head World Wide Stout, Avery Mephistopheles Stout etc, but even more "normal" heavy beers like Founders Breakfast Stout are nicer vs fully chilled.

Yeah, isn't that the truth - our "beer fridge" runs on the cool side, and the kind of product you pointed out gets a little too cold.

At the same time, those "rich" beers don't do well too warm.

I generally take one out, open it, let it sit for just a few minutes in the bottle - then pour it, and don't let it linger too long :)

I just realized the "wine fridge", that I bought for my wife lol, has no wine in it. Just rare or crazy beers. Thank god she loves beer

I have to get World Wide Stout again, I sipped on one for like two hours last time watching a movie. Think it was an aged 2008 bottle. Was just nutz. Only found it one other time since then, so hard to find and never really know when.

:D

Ours is an extra full sized fridge - we basically moved the old fridge into the garage when we got all our new appliances (shortly after moving in ~10 years ago). It's ugly, it's a little rusty, but it just keeps chugging along! I can't image getting by with just the one with our high volume of beverages (and excess ice).

re: WWS, yeah, I haven't seen that. A few DFHs make their way through here on a pretty regular schedule (usual suspects like the 60 and 90).

You guys are filling up my shopping list

Well, I watched the final episode (of six) of 'Wolf Hall' tonight on BBC 2 (excellent, gripping, superb, brilliant TV), while sipping a glass of Straffe Hendrik beer. Divine.

I have been hit or miss with wws. I find huge variation bottle to bottle. One was great. The other 4-5 have been meh.

I have an assortment of 120 min going back to 09. I think the 09 is gonna get opened in the very near future.

Anybody pick up the somewhat recent batch of raisin d'extra? The last time I had it was 2012. And it was a bottle from 2007, which I believe was the last time it was bottled until recently.

Oh, interesting. How would you compare and contrast an older 120 with a younger one. I've had it before, but never an aged one.

Holy smokes. You sir, have a level of will power regarding beer I can't fathom :D

I've had the Raison d'Etre not the d'Extra, but I wasn't a fan, and I like a pretty wide range, including dark, rich, sweeter-ish beers. It's like a prune juice beer :D Maybe the d'Extra would change my mind.

Ha. I have always collected and archived stuff. Whether it's live concert recordings. Screen printed posters. Or media in general. So naturally I started verticals on all my favorite beers. Now that it's been ~5 years I have a wide range.

From what I remember d'extra was a borderline novelty beer. Which is sort of what I consider wws. And 120 to a certain degree.

Plan on having a Logsdon Straffe Drieling Organic Ale 750 ML, another good Oregon beer later while listening to music, and reading my book.

I'm going to Seattle/Portland in a month. Looking forward to visiting cascade. I'm craving a sour beer just typing this.
