Ballast Point makes excellent beers, I could drink Sculpin all day long, hands down one of the best IPA around.

I had the first of two of these Victory at Sea bottles. Oy, what a fantastic beer. It is a coffee porter with hints of vanilla, and it blew me away. I've been slow to get into porters and stouts, if only because I had a few bad experiences with some rather saccharine brews in the past.

This is a mighty fine beer with everything in perfect balance. I keep having excellent experiences with dark beers out of San Diego....

Have you tried any of the stouts or porters from Stone yet?

Oh yes, I had a lovely smoked porter from them the other day, and a few months ago I went to their tap room near the baseball in San Diego and sampled quite a few delicious ones including the w00tstout 2.0. Actually it was Stone who finally got me willing to try the styles again.

Now that I see this post, I believe we have talked about already in this thread!

w00tstout is one of my favorites and I have a bottle ready to crack open in my fridge.....

If you can find the smoked porter with orange or vanilla, they are heaven and everytime I am able to find them, I stock up on them!!!

Ahh yes that was you! I'll keep an eye out for those. Cheers!

Staying a few days in VA, so thought I would try Gingerbread Stout made Hardywood Park Craft Brewery of VA. Pretty good stuff.

Yeah I always hit Stone up in Escondido when in SD (they have a 2nd place now too but forgetting where). Coronado Brewing is excellent as well in that area. Funny story on my bachelor party which was a brewery tour, we were at a brewery in Colorado where some guys left Coronado to help run this brewery. I walked in wearing a Coronado Brewing Idiot IPA shirt lol, talk about chances of that happening. They were cool as hell and took us around the brewery and gave samples of stuff that wasn't even tapped yet. Coronado just started distributing here in South FL like a year or so ago.

My neighbor always grabs whatever Sculpin is available when it is at a store as it can be hard to find

They have a location now in San Diego, have been there twice now. Liberty Station. It is nice. I have not been to the big one though that is on my todo / bucket list for the very near future!

I seem to have found myself in possession of a six pack of habanero Scuplin IPA. Hmmmmm, I didn't know they made this...

Good news.

The chap who runs my favourite off-licence (i.e. place where you can buy alcohol to take out, as opposed to a 'licensed premises', such as a pub, where you have a licence to sell alcohol for consumption on the premises), informed me today, with a grin, that he had been able to order a crate of St Bernardus Abt 12 for me.

A crate, eh? How many bottles in a crate?;)

Twenty four is what you usually find in a crate. Twenty four bottles of St Bernardus Abt 12, were bought at my request (this is not an easily obtained beer, and nor is it produced in large quantities). With great restraint, I decided to forego utter greed and contented myself with sixteen of those twenty four

To that I added a few bottles of 'Rochefort 6', and a few of another, new beer that I have not tasted yet but which they recommended. This will be delivered to my door early nest week.

Moreover, they are out of Orval, but it is on its way. Likewise, (because I asked), most unfortunately, they are out of Straffe Hendrick (a fantastic beer, and, along with St Bernardus 12, one of my all time favourites, but one which is produced in very, very limited quantities). The Straffe Hendrick is - apparently - unobtainable at the moment, and hasn't been available for a while. Thankfully, I seem to have bought quite a few when it was available, as my stocks have not yet been entirely consumed.

I asked about La Chouffre - yet another on Happybunny's list. (I'm going to have to track back to find that list and see if I can lay hands on some of the other beers he mentioned); my friend will be able to order some of that for me.

Well, you'll be quite well stocked. :D

Too bad they're out of Orval, I love this beer!

Well, I am always very well stocked. Actually, I pride myself on the quality of my cellar.

Yesterday, I attended meetings for much of the morning (mentioned in another thread) and had a late (but long and lingering and liquid) lunch in an award winning restaurant with a former colleague (now a good friend) who had served with me for the best part of two years in a recent foreign posting.

He commented on my cellar in those far flung parts remarking that he had never seen some of the wines (and ports) which I had observing that they were unmatched for quality. They were.

This morning, I am pleased to announce, a delivery of St Bernardus Abt 12 (16 bottles) and several of Trappist Rochefort 6 (which had been ordered on Saturday) arrived at my house.

Came across an interesting article today on the battle that's brewing :)rolleyes:) between the craft beer movement and the large purveyors of carbonated alcoholic urine.

For America's craft beer revolution, brewing battle has come to a head

Actually, I find myself in complete agreement with that remark.

Historically, the dismal quality of US beer (and indeed, in former times, US wine, too) has left me, as a European, with a marked prejudice against them; the beer is truly terrible.

Very interesting reading. A fresh take on the old 'quality' versus 'quantity' argument. Let's hope the craft beer movement are victorious in this brewing battle; not only would it be better for the customer, - and the market - it would be far better for the reputation of the beers, too.

Good god!!!!!! That is freaking outstanding? Are you going to age any of them? Or are they going right in the fridge and will be ready for immediate consumption?!?!

Been a while. My tapatalk hasn't been sending me notifications and I forget to Check.

Anyways. Info on this years dark lord day is starting to roll out.

Went to founders this past weekend. Such a great place to visit. They renovated and knocked it out of the park. Heaters and fires make it very comfortable even in this terrible winter we are having.

Actually, I never put any of these beers in the fridge; they stay in the cellar, which is the washroom, where my suitcases are also stowed. However, it is rather well stocked, with wines, beers, and serious whiskeys and cognacs and ports……..

Good beers, like good wine, are best consumed at something approximating to room temperature, so that one can savour them on one's palate, rather than have one's taste buds stunned by something frozen.

Summer time is different, but then, I don't feel the need to have my beers quite so………robust……in summer.

However, these are beers that one can drink one of, or two, at a maximum, at a time. And they will wait for me.

The place I spotted them last Saturday……….actually, on further recollection, what happened was when I called in, and perused the Sauternes, studying labels, the young manager I normally deal with approached me and informed me that the St Bernardus Abt 12 - which I had been asking about for a few weeks, as they had been out of it for a few weeks, had finally arrived, although it was not yet on the shelves.

I idly wondered how many bottle shad arrived, and I was informed that the total came to twenty four. With heroic restraint, I persuaded myself that I would be an exhibition of sheer, unadulterated greed, were I to purchase all twenty four. So, I asked for sixteen, and decided to add a few other beers to that……..um, crate.

The thing is, I work abroad quite a bit; it is nice, when I am home between trips, and postings, to be able to stroll into my cellar, rather than scream at an empty space……. and have to wait for another month while the kind of esoteric, specialist, high quality, low volume beers I like wait to come back into stock.

Anyway, I drank one last night and it was sublime…….

Looks like fun and a nice place to warm up :)

Wow, yeah, that sounds amazing (even in the ranks of Founders products which are all outstanding):

I wonder if my local beer supplier will score this[?] He's gotten some pretty rare/limited products, I'll have to ask.
