Went to the OC Fair this weekend, and what did I find, on tap! Widmer's Old Embalmer! It wasn't bad and packed a nice little punch to the taste buds.
It is a barrel aged barleywine. It was pretty darn good, even though it was served in a plastic cup. It did make me add it to my list of beers to look for when I go to my purchasing spots!
Ah, an aged barleywine? What is that like? I have several at home (bought because they were recommended to me by people in the trade whom I respect) - but haven't touched them yet.
Tonight, I am sipping a Chilean reserve, a Chardonnay with a bit of heft, but nicely balanced for all of that.
You are in for a treat. I really like them, a lot. The flavor can be and is usually robust. I can't put a finger on the exact taste or what it tastes like. I just know I like them and I like most as they warm up a little. Some, if not most of the ones I have had are very intense in flavor and punch at the end. The ones that I have had, are very strong, I mean strong flavoring. They can be sweet, hoppy, citrus/fruity flavored, or all of the above.
It is Stella:30 time, nice and chilled.
a little red, a little white.
My heart flutters every time Riesling is discussed. I feel like today is a day to open up some bubbly. What a wonderful Friday so far.
some cab with dinner
I may be wrong, but it was mostly rubbish until the late 80s.
Right. I seem to recall reading up on its history, but that was a long time ago. I might have seen it in a wine documentary. I can't remember how I was introduced to it myself, but that first sip put me in a bit of a frenzy. It is my go to for white wine that needs an extra kick. Just as malbecs are my go to when I have nothing appropriate to set out. I've yet to speak to anyone who doesn't like a malbec.Agreed. (I drank that stuff then....in considerable quantity - I blush to recall).
But - can be - and often is - quite sublime in recent decades.
I've yet to speak to anyone who doesn't like a malbec.
2 jiggers of Yellow Spot with a round ice cube. Scrumptious.
