I beg to differ.

The DPI difference between the two is huge. For a 100" TV with 1080P, the DPI is around 210. 7680x4320 is a huge resolution, if that was on a 100" TV the DPI would be about 3300.

I would definitely be able to notice that difference.

Two things you should look into:

1> Resolving power of the eye (past a certain point at a certain distance, your eyes can't tell the difference in detail). For most people, the differences are negligible between 720P and 1080P at average screen sizes and viewing distances because the eye cannot resolve more than 720P beyond 6 feet or so from an average HDTV.

2> He was comparing a theater screen (say 100 feet) to a 100 INCH tv screen versus resolution. So the comparison is 4320 lines on 100 foot versus 1080 lines on a 100" screen. I would imagine the 100" screen will look better at a normal viewing distance for each size screen (4320 lines / (100 ft *12 inches per foot)) = 3.6 versus (1080 lines /100 inches) = 108

I have a 93" screen with a 720P projector and sit at 8 feet. I should be able to see a small improvement at that distance with 1080P, but it would be small and that assumes the source material is actually utilizing that extra resolution (many movies do not). But arguing about 720P versus 1080P on a 32" tv is moot unless you're sitting less than 3 feet from it.

As you say, with effort, you can watch movies on your :apple:TV without the iTMS, but wouldn't you rather save all that hassle and stick the DVD in the device to play it?

Something I forgot to mention in my previous reply: by playing my ripped content on my :apple:TV I can avoid having to flip disks or change disks in the case of movies such as the extended editions of King Kong or The Lord of the Rings that have more than one disk. With the tools I use I can create one continuous video file and I don't have to pause in the middle of the film to change disk.

Regards,
Michael

Really? I've not figured out how to do that yet. I'm having to have "Schindler's List part One and part Two" in the Library.

How do you do that?

This thread on the Handbrake forums will tell you how to do it. You can use MTR in place of FairMount.

A new interface would be nice. The boring box with plain text menus doesn't come off as very :apple:-like.

Some movies that show up in iTunes as being available for rent are not showing up on :apple:TV or are hard to find. For example, try and locate which genre Titan A.E. appears under. There's a referral link that appears when viewing similar movies, and you can find it by searching, but it doesn't show up under Sci-Fi, Family, or any other genre (at least not the last 2 times I looked). Also, some SD movies can be rented on the :apple:TV, but give an error in iTunes that they are unavailable.

Separate multiple seasons of TV shows into individual sub-menus. Currently when you select a TV show, you see every single episode listed, albeit with a break in between for season. I would rather see a list of seasons, and then see the episodes for that season only. Alternatively, this could be done by keeping the current full list and simply adding some shortcuts at the top to go to lists for specific seasons. Also want to list them in numerical order from 1 to X.

With regards to all the banter about changing one's way of life in the digital age, i'll add my own 2 cents. With the impending shutoff of analog TV, I got a digital tuner for my Mac. Since getting it, I have disconnected my analog cable TV tuner and switched to using the digital tuner exclusively. This was quite easy for me to do since I hate 98% of what's being shown on cable TV. The few shows that I still watch are mostly on PBS which I tune in with the digital tuner (some in HD), and the other shows I like I have simply purchased season passes for on iTunes/:apple:TV (South Park). There's more to life than vegging in front of a television, and wasting money for service you don't need.

buying movies without storing them locally

I would love to be able to buy a HD movie for $15-20 and then have unlimited access to viewing that movie without actually keeping it on my apple tv. Basically unlimited rentals of that movie. I really think I would opt for this vs. either buying in the current state where i have to store the movie locally or just being able to rent for one 24 hour viewing. this seems like it should be a no-brainer for apple...

I would like the USB port ont he back to be a viable port for a USB device as opposed to being only for diagnostics. I don't know if that could be fixed through a software update, but if so...I'd add and external HD.

Also...my iMac is upstairs and my ATV is Downstairs. If iTunes is not "open" then I have to run upstairs and open it in order to be able to stream. This all gets back to the USB port and wanting to attach an external HD. Otherwise it would be nice it Itnes could stream without haveing to actually be "open".

Yes it is. Except you don't have to record it. You simply go to iTunes and buy that particular show. All a DVR is doing is sifting through all the junk you get on live TV and picking out the good stuff so you can watch it at your convenience.
I think that kinda reinforces Tipots' comment about the AppleTV being more of a storefront....

Rip it to .mp4 duh..
I'm not that privy to converting a video_ts to mp4. So just a couple of questions. Will changing it to mp4 preserve subtitles (switchable to off/on)? Will it preserve the movie's chapters for quick navigation?

I still want the ability to be able to create jukebox-like playlists on the fly when browsing and listening to music.

Ditto!

I'd love to be listening to lets say "shuffle all" and then hear I song I like and be able to unshuffle around that song so I could hear the rest of the album.

I'd also like to be able to browse by first letter. If you have a large collection scrolling through all the artists can be a pit of a pain.
