Don't think you need a screen protector generally for scratches, but I think it helps prevent the screen from breaking when dropped. I've used protectors for all my phones dating back to the 3G and never broke a sceen.
The negative thing about glass screen protectors though is reduced finger sensitivity IMO. Slight, but noticeable.
Tempered glass screen protector 100% protects from cracks and drops. The way it sticks to the screen gives the screen an almost second layer of strength plus a tiny shock absorbant buffer. Has saved my ass more times than I can count. Literally. They have cracked and scratched in place of the screen so many times that I will never be without no matter how supposedly scratch resistant the gorilla glass is.
Reduced finger sensitivity? (That’s what she said - lol couldn’t resist). But I have not seen this phenomenon when installed correctly with no bubbles or dust underneath. If you have problems with it use the hot shower method (not a joke this time lol). Turn your shower on without the fan, close the bathroom door. Make sure it gets real steamy for 2-3 mins, then turn it off and close the door again and wait for the steam to pretty much clear. Then go in and close the door behind you and install the screen protector. The moisture will have clung to any dust or whatever in the air and made it heavy enough to drop to the floor. It works aces I never get a bubble or dust any more.
I drop my phone once a week if not more from 3-4 feet up. My case and screen protector has made sure I have never cracked an iPhone. Not once.

Other than that, never had an issue. Always ran nekkid too! Am using a silicon apple case on the Max tho for now. Just to get used to having a plus sized phone again. 
I have used a Galaxy S8 Plus now for 12 Months with No front display screen protector.
And it has Zero scratches. It's been dropped. It's been in pockets with keys and nothing.
And its Gorilla Glass 5.

It's a tool. I don't care. I don't obsess. First phone out of the 11 I have had to have an issue, I'm doing just fine!
I’ve dropped my phone on wood floors and concrete driveway so bad it jacked my leather Apple case. No cracks. My job used to be the reporting/testing/analytics behind selling you screen protectors. If in a purse or bag, it’s helpful. Drops.. no help. Glass protector just more Likely to crack so when it cracks and your iPhone screen doesn’t you think it saved it.

This. Oleophobic marks will happen sans protection. I used to care but even now that I don’t using something that completely takes away that wonderful feeling of bare iPhone glass

every iphone since SE has gotten strictly worse in all variables

My s9+ got a scratch the day I unboxed it. The s8 did good with scratches but the s9 did poor with them.
This is happening with my 7 Plus and I cant figure it out

If you're doing this I can see why you would get one. I drop my phone like 1-2x a year at the maximum. I never buy AppleCare either because i'm generally not clumsy with my phone.
Looked at my wife’s X. .. now keep in mind she is the polar opposite of me. I keep my screen clean. I usually have a microfiber cloth nearby. If near sand screen is blown off before cloth. I can’t count how many times she’s asked why her pictures are so blurry and it’s due to smudge all over the lens cover. Crazy successful and smart woman.. she just doesn’t care about a clean phone.
It’s a minefield. Damn. Scratches, long scratches, across the screen vertically and horizontally. I may have nightmares.

FWIW a pristine screen helps a LOT for resale value.
It’s just different strokes. I used to protect my screens. I used to care about resale. I still take care of my phones (& screen) but I personally love the feel of the actual glass and that is the experience I love. I’m not right or wrong.I'll be so bold as to quote myself.

She thinks 0 about resale. To her it’s a 90% a tool. She knows it’s likely to be replaced at least once within the 2 years of AC+.
