Yes it is, very different. iPhone 7+ after 2 years didn't have any scratches on the screen. In the first week using iPhone XS Max I have SEVERAL (2-3 big ones, up to 10-20 total) different very sharp / narrow microscratches from very basic use. How the hell is this so poor compared to the previous iPhones (atleast 7) ?!?
After owning the 6+, 6s+, and 8+ —- agreed. My Max doesn’t seem any more scratch prone. Threads like this exist for every new iPhone. Funny. It gets old.

I see some questions about cheap glass ones on amazon. I been using them since the iphone 6 was release. 2 or 3 packs under $10 and they work just fine for protecting the screen. Try to find ones with a tray that goes on the phone to make sure you line up the glass right. I have never broken a screen, Family and friends never have also and I put them on all phones i can. I live at the beach so going naked isn't really good idea.
Spigen are the ones i have on my max right now. They are fully body and no cut out for the notch and very easy install tray they come with. Most have a cut out for the notch that can make things little tricky even using a tray. I will never buy a high dollar one. Since they last months at a time some times even a year and very cheap. I see no reason not to have them unless you like to go naked.
Do they really help? I have no idea but i know if a $4 screen protector can save from having to send my phone in for repairs it's well worth it. If it doesn't help save it...well at less sand didn't destroy my glass

Yep these type of threads come out every year for every type of phone. Someone scratches their screen when they didn't scratch the screen on their previous model phone. Then suddenly it's supposed to mean that the glass is "softer" and more prone to scratches. It's all anecdotal.

I've usually gone out and just purchased Anker tempered glass. You get 2 for $9.99 - they usually last me 6 mo to a year before I end up doing something that shatters them or I feel like I wanna take them off to see what it was like before I put them on.
I was going to go protector'less this year but I saw a Zagg stand at the mall and my wife and I got one. Instant regret. The sides are popping up and reflects light like no tomorrow.

Yeah I have anker ones on my X right now. As far the Max I ordered a few brands and the spigen ones. Spigen was the ones that came in same day the Max so i went with them. No issues with fit at all and with case been fine. They have a few ones on the market but these are the ones i order. little more then others but so far be worth it

Every year when someone's brand new iPhone screen gets scratched they claim that Apple has screwed up and made the screen less durable.
you can't even make an accurate comparison. you could have done something different in the lsat few weeks compared to the last 2 years that caused a scratch.

I totally disagree. Tempered Glass Screen Protectors have saved me on countless occasions. Sure, the protectors themselves can chip, but the screen underneath stays intact! I once made the mistake of never using them at all, and that was the one time I regretted it! Some are better than others though, so indeed there are plenty of cheap Chinese ones that won't protect anything at all. So if you've had any of those, I can totally understand why this has been your experience. But there really are alot of good ones out there these days. I've got some of Orzly's on my SX Max at the moment, and they're top notch! Have dropped it a couple of times already, and not even a scratch!
If you can feel it with your fingernail, you've scratched the glass. If you can just see light micro scratches in certain light but can't feel them, it's the oleophobic coating. I've seen a few on my X and now my XS Max. The coating will scratch.
Your post doesn’t give any specific details about how you have used your phone. Like for instance, do you use a case? Do you Carry your iPhone in your pocket with the display exposed. Need more details.
The use is the same with both phones. Nothing other has changed than XS Max getting scratches much easily than 7 plus.
My X scratched very, very easily (some micro, some deep). Replaced screen twice. By end of year, either my AirPods or (mostly rubber coated) Escalade key fob (only other items kept in front pocket together) had created so many micro scratches in a small area that it had a constant fog spot, in addition to several other thin, long scratches.
My XS Max now has the same series of many micro scratches appearing in a concentrated area, unfortunately this time right over the front facing camera. I also have numerous other longer, light scratches in various areas of the screen.
No other iPhone (and I've had them all) had any noticeable screen scratches under same conditions, whatsoever. Oh well. foggy screen splotches and non-crisp front facing camera images will be my norm with this one.

Mine usually last unless I drop my phone or bang it with one of those metal seat belt clips on planes. They do me in unless I’m paying attention.

Don’t get it. And when it there are scratches all over, they won’t do anything about it. Even if you tell them you are in your 14 day right of rescission. I’m sending it back, selling my iPad which has edges that hurt to hold it for long periods of time and going with Samsung. Apple is going down hill.

I’ve had my Xs Max for 10 days and I have scratches all over the rounded screen edges on my phone. My screen has more scratches than all of my other apple phones had combined after months and years of use.

I hear you, this happens all of the time. Except my Xs Max has been in my pocket and there are literally scratches all over my screen. Some that I can feel, meaning actual glass is scratched. This phone has more scratches than all of my previous iPhones combined and I have only had it for 10 days.
You are the exception here as most know how to take care of their devices. You need to keep your house keys and phone separate of expect your phone to look like crap! Sounds like a self induced to me!

Hate to say it but my XS Max has a little scratch that appears only in certain lighting conditions. My previous iPhones never had a single scratch on them, and that’s without using a case or screen protector. My XS Max is in the Apple silicone case at all times and now has a slight scratch on it.
Honestly, even though I was annoyed at first, I’ve learnt to just accept it and carry on using the phone knowing it will probably pick up more similar scratches. They won’t impact the use of the phone and I don’t plan on selling it. With the iUP Apple doesn’t care about the condition of the phone, as long as it turns on. I babied my iPhone X for a whole year and when trading it in for this phone, they didn’t even care at all that it was in perfect condition.

Does it interfere work with FaceID? I always prefer full body screen protectors except for a small opening for the earpiece, but some people say it can interfere with FaceOD and IR sensor.

For years I managed to keep my iPhones pristine - my 4, 5, and 6 each made it through about 2 years with nary a scratch. Then about a year ago, I noticed some scratches on my 7. Couldn't figure it out...I was using the 7 in exactly the same way (no screen protector, kept in front right pocket of my pants with nothing else). Thought maybe the 7's glass was weaker than prior versions, as suggested in this thread.
Then, finally, it hit me. The issue was actually the pants I was wearing. They were jeans, with one of those little coin pockets above the regular pocket. That coin pocket was studded with two metal rivets (which is fairly typical). Those rivets were scratching my screen - not frequently, but often enough to leave a few marks. I compared the pants to an older pair that also had rivets, and I noticed that the two metal pieces were a little lower, and a little closer to the center of the primary pocket. So, they were just a little more in the way on the newer pants. That's all it took.
From then on, I was more careful putting the phone in my pocket (and removing it). I don't think I've put any more scratches on the screen since I figured out the problem.
tl;dr - if you're experiencing unexplained scratches, don't assume the glass is suddenly softer. Carefully examine what you do with the phone - because maybe there's something in your routine responsible for the scratching, something you wouldn't necessarily expect. Maybe even the pants you're wearing.
