Makes my skin crawl… Now that's creepy! It just doesn't send positive vibes, at least, more often than not.

I mean, where are you when your skin is crawling? Where is it going? How do you get back in it?

It's ritualistic language; in these cases, the performance of the statement is more important than the content of the statement. Saying things like this signals to someone that you are acknowledging their grief and conscious of their feelings.
"Ritualistic language" is very important and forms a part of "statesmanship competencies" which helps to distinguish a "real country/state" from a "territory" which is run by a "temporary management".

Kind of the same thing that distinguishes a “language” from a “dialect”, often examples of what’s known as a “polite fiction”.

I don't think I follow. Are you saying there is no difference between the state and the territory? Liberty and freedom? This English language is "silly", right? I guess the difference between those things is only a "polite fiction" for some minds.

Well, you're right about one thing: you don't follow.

Anyway, to add a new one to this thread: maybe the younger people here know this one, but the word "rizz" is really spreading around. Derived from something a Twitch streamer said and possibly truncated from "charisma", it means "ability to seduce a woman" (similar to "spitting game"). Aside from the fact that these terms are always a bit sleazy, this one annoyed me more recently because I actually heard someone say it in real life, not in reference to seduction, but a co-worker saying it in reference to someone's good performance: "your rizz game is really on point", they said. I can't believe people actually talk like this.

I can't believe it either, just so awful! Worst one I've seen on this thread in awhile

Something "to the nth degree"
What the flim-flam does that mean? It sounds mathematicy, but without knowing what n is, it is meaningless. If n is 0, then you haven't improved.
In the same way that people don't understand statistics and probability, they don't understand exponentials.

I'm noticing a lot of people in this thread seem to take idioms overly literally. I'm not sure if they're doing that on purpose just for fun to write something funny or really don't understand that language isn't that rigid when it comes to expressions like that and are actually annoyed by it 🤔

I knew this brought something to my head:

Oh! Here's another one, "taking (or took) some big L's" or whatever it is. As in, "We really took some big L's last night!" What does that even mean?!?! Or am I making this up?

This is a new one to me: "mise well" being written instead of "might as well." Just saw in a FB post. I wasn't sure at first if it was a case of a misheard idiom (like how some people think it's "for all intensive purposes" instead of "intents and purposes," for example), but then googled it and discovered this is actually a thing 🙄

Okay, here's one that I feel like a lot of you won't like:

"It's giving", meaning "it's giving off...[X] vibes". So instead of saying, say, of a particular outfit, "it's giving off rockstar vibes", someone will just say "it's giving rockstar".

Yes, it is more zoomer slang. As one of the zoomers here, I feel like sharing some of the obnoxious ways we talk. :p
