Influencer

I cannot keep a straight face whenever I read that.

Of this moment, “influencer” is the shock jock; the trash TV host; the infomercial entertainer; the socialite: a media-facing hustle making the most of media hustling tools before them at this time. Capitalism, eating itself the human centipede. [edited, for precision]

I've had the pleasure of being at a nice hotel and watching the manager field a call from an 'influencer.' LOL

In fact, I actually got some free stuff - the guy was like "You know what? That dumb@$$ wanted free stuff. You're a paying customer, and because of that, and because you're nice, here's some swag." 😆

"Momfluencer", that's really bad. Any of those "influencer families" are sus af.

I tutor kids aged 9-12, and when I asked them what they wanted to be when they grew up, most of them said "influencer", "YouTuber", or "streamer".
Have the girls already had the botox fish lips installed or are their parents making them wait until they are 15? o_O

Streamers, huh? My mom told me I could be anything I wanted when I grew up if I just put my mind to it, so I am confident, if these kids want it bad enough, they too can become a long, narrow strip of bright colored paper.

Oh god, don't even get me started on this...

The fact that the kids you're working with are all saying they want to be "influencers" or "streamers" is really sad. IMO, it's not a sustainable career, unless maybe you're working as an agent/manager for multiple top influencers—but that's not even really being an influencer. But whatever, to each their own. I know a guy who like bought his own apartment using the money made from streaming/content creation, so I guess it's fine? Maybe? Personally, I'm not comfortable talking in front of a camera, so no way I could do it.

Also, I've never come across "momfluencer," but that's just awful! And also, what's the point of running a "family YouTube channel" or whatever? What are you hoping to gain? People knowing all your personal information? That's just stupid to me.

My son got to his new school (we relocated to VA a few months ago) and thought it was 'really cool' that there was an 'influencer' at his high school.

I had to explain to him that

- I didn't care
- most others didn't care either
- even if he was a billionaire...simply knowing someone by extension didn't make that person cool OR my son cool. lol

As it turns out, my son found out said 'influencer' (or streamer) maybe has a few hundred followers and is a d__chebag. lol

Not to mention that child labor laws don't apply to these channel owners making money off parading their kids on camera and making them act constantly. Hopefully that will change.

"good lookin out" meaning basically "thanks for looking out for me." Just always thought that was a really awkward phrasing.

And it gets worse. There's a recent story about a "famous" YouTube mom (who was discovered to have been abusing her children along with her business partner). They refer to her as a "momfluencer" 🙄 🙄

My visceral anger rises the surface if I witness people using their kids as devices, marionettes, set pieces, proxies, or cudgels — whether for social media influence, political manoeuvring, or for living our their unfulfilled dreams, vicariously. As a kid, I survived that. As an adult woman, I don’t mince words about this.

Basically, me, toward anyone trying that with kids (47s into the clip, since there’s no gif at the ready):

Charlie-Foxtrot and Fubar used to bother me until I found out exact what they meant, so now I use them too

I don’t know what Charlie-Foxtrot means. I have heard of Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot and know what that means, though.

“So what you’re saying is you want to be in a Dhar Mann video and have millions of other kids say things about you,” I once told an 11-year-old I help look after, as we were watching one of the many Highlights for Children-styled (think “Goofus & Gallant”) Dhar Mann morality tale stories on YT. His response was delayed a beat, because he had to actually think about the cause-effect for a moment.
