I also have no expectation that Microsoft would port over fully functional versions of their software to competing platforms any more than Apple would do the same with their own software, so that leaves me with the obvious choice of using a Windows based system if I want to preserve all functionality in Microsoft based software. I am thankful for what is available from Microsoft on iOS and MacOS though.
MS released a fully functional visual studio code for Chromebook (arm and Intel Chromebooks).

Yeah unfortunately a bunch of fails using Microsoft software:
  • MS Excel cannot export to CSV (need to use Numbers as a work-around)
  • MS Edge fails for many of my internal websites
  • MS Outlook
    • need to click on an email and then click on a different email to remove the “read” flag since there is only a keyboard shortcut to mark it “unread”
    • Cannot copy an email and then attach it to another email as an attachment
    • Cannot save an email to OneDrive
  • MS Teams
    • Cannot share an external screen
    • Cannot use an external web cam
    • Cannot close lid on the Magic Keyboard and continue hearing audio of a call
    • Sometimes cannot join a call when external monitor is connected
Teams on iPad also shows your video sideways if you move it to an external monitor. Zoom doesn’t do that. Google Meet doesn’t do that. But I usually join Teams meetings on my iPad because Teams for Windows makes the fans spin like it’s about to take off.

Bummer on the fan issue, doesn't happen on the laptops that we use at work. Good thing that you have the option to use the iPad, but it totally sucks that it is less than ideal.

In the iPadOS 18 beta, I noticed that Microsoft Teams now supports an external video camera. Is this a feature of iPadOS 18 or a newer version of Microsoft Teams? Apple's FaceTime has supported this since iPadOS 17.

And no longer sideways. There is hope.

Great news, thanks for the ray of hope!

Give Microsoft a few months after the final release of iPadOS 18.

But I noticed that iPadOS 18 Beta now supports more different external cameras. Including in FaceTime. This is definitely an iPadOS thing.

Sadly, still experiencing this issue when trying to open pdf documents saved in OneDrive via the files app (both on my phone and iPad). The solution is to reset OneDrive settings, which provides a temporary fix, but the problem eventually comes back.

Oh well, I suppose a stopgap measure is better than no solution at all.

Another solution is to use e.g. FE File Explorer or FileBrowser (Pro) and mount, access and interact with file on One drive(s) trough them. This, as well as a bunch of other problems or particularities when operating with data files (located wherever), is then simply solved.

What’s the difference between the two, aside from one being a paid app and the other being subscription based?

No difference, in the long run the paid app is cheaper

In my opinion, the paid app is worth the money. It is Finder on steroids, and something iPadOS should be able to do to begin with.

This could help you decide....

I actually started out with Go and then moved to Professional, been a FileBrowser user since the beginning (bounced around between FX Explorer and GoodReader)... before settling with FB. But GoodReader is pretty good when it comes to using PDFs.

Yes, FB Pro is good but it is essentially a « shell » inside the Files App. It has greater functionality but for some reason (probably due to it’s being nested inside of the Files or iPad File System) it is somewhat slower. Also for some videos on an external drive I get no previews (although these are present from FB Pro using the shortcut to the Photos Library).

While you can access FB through Files, you can run it directly - no slow down… actually, au contraire, you can run a bunch of things in the background - e.g. copying files - while doing whatever. Or are referring to unzipping archives? that is slower, but if you need fast in relation to unarchiving zip&co. (plus a better integrated video player than Files or FB, while having most of the features besides multi-file rename): FE FileExplorer is the app of choice IMHO. 🙃

I have just tried the external camera that is now supported in Microsoft Teams. When Face ID is required, the transmission of the external camera is briefly interrupted. This is logical and not due to Teams. Is this also the case with FaceTime?
