http://fortune.com/2017/01/09/verizon-subsidized-phones/

I believe it is fully gone. I was given the opportunity to "early upgrade" all my contract phones to a payment plan, and even if I don't accept that and wait till the end of the contract, its only payment plans going forward.
Yeah, I'm reading the January thread now.

Bummer...I'll still call tomorrow to see if my monthly price drops once my 2 yr commitment ends in Sept.

Or maybe the Chinese can add CDMA support to their phones.

You know...like Apple and Samsung and Google do. Make a global phone.

I see no reason to leave Verizon. Moreove, they are still subsidizing phones unlike AT&T and TMobile.

They will add it if they do the math and think it is more profitable

Actually they have fully stopped subsidizing phones  About 1 month before i was scheduled for a subsidized upgrade to, thanks verizon :p

Just to update:

Yep, no more subsidy and because I am on a loyalty plan (and pay no line access fee currently) when the 2 yr commitment is up in Sept, my monthly bill won't decrease significantly..

The rep said to call back in late Sept to see if any promos may be offered...but I doubt anything will matter.

The price difference right now between the loyalty plan and their current plans is about $1.

Whoop-de-do.

So the loss of the subsidy in my case matters although I'm not going to cry about it.

I'm just not sure where I'm going. Not to the OnePlus5 but I am debating about going back to Android. I have to see if Apple works things out with Qualcomm, the price, and how the iPhone ends up looking like.

iPhone as daily driver and an inexpensive Android (used SIM-free/no service) to tinker with. ;)

iPhone I get all my network goodies like Wifi Calling & Volte on a sim free iPhone, on Android I have to buy from the network if i want these features.

Only around 1/3 of the next iphone price...which one would you choose? By the way OnePlus5 price in China is cheaper then the global version for the same phone and it would be around $333 US dollars.
On the latest Android Central podcast Jerry said to not be surprised if the OP5 is closer to $550.

I don't know where you pulled this random $333 amount.

Neither. The OnePlus 3T was closer to $400 in China. The 5 will be more expensive. Xiaomi is cheaper. Why waste so much money for an Android phone when a cheaper Xiaomi can run all the same apps?

Nope, I prefer IOS. Price is not everything. Main reason is I can communicate with my parents/friends/family quickly and easily. No 3rd party apps required, its all built in.

Huawei Mate 9 or P10

I'm a big fan of my P9+, solid build quality, great camera and love that my version is dual sim (very useful for personal + work sim).

The only negative about it is the updates are slow to roll out, but then towards the end of my time with the iPhone 6 the frequency of updates bothered me. Haven't found that Goldilocks level yet.

Anyway price was a big factor for me and that was when it was £720 vs the £450 I paid for my Huawei P9+, the other was that horrible camera bump on the iPhone.... SORT IT OUT APPLE!

than deal with the jumbled, disorganized, unintuitive mess that is Android.....

Don't want to start a fruitless online argument, but in my experience using the aforementioned P9+ Android Marshmellow has been a seamless experience using Huawei's EMUI launcher. Ultimately with Android you need to be picky with the devices you choose. Generally these days you shouldn't be having the issues you describe with the various manufacturers flagship models.

Because the One Plus has taken the roll formally occupied by the Nexus if there is a ROM out there you want it's made for the One Plus.

edit and to answer the OP, in the general sense yes I'd pay 1K for an iPhone if there was an Apple store close. I would likely not pay what One Plus is going to want for the OP5.

I had a coworker (on Verizon) get real excited about the OnePlus and ... buy it. When he got it (last generation, not the new one coming out) - I have to say I was impressed. The OS was fast, lightweight, the phone felt great, the camera was fast, and the quick charge was nice.

What made him send it back? Yeah, it doesn't work on Verizon. lol. Well, it does, but you won't get faster than 3g speeds.

I started out with Android (HTC MyTouch, Droid 1, HTC Thunderbolt, Note 3, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 2014, Samsung Tab Pro & Tab S) and every year I try out the latest and greatest from Android because a lot of my coworkers are Android. But, I've decided that Apple is best for me. By far the best app, hardware quality, and OS experience. Yeah, you don't get to customize it but ... I don't also have to spend hours fixing stuff I shouldn't have to. No adware is HUGE for me too. Yes, I tried the Pixel - probably the closest Android got to getting me back but ... iPhone build quality and OS smoothness wins. I'll gladly pay a few hundred more for, what is to me a better experience. If I was single with more time on my hands, I'd probably still have Android. I miss my rooting days - beta testing roms... kinda... no ... not really. I had way too much free time back then.

I'm happy Android exists and I hope it continues to pump out Pixel like phones - Apple needs the competition to keep a fire under its butt. So I say go Android! And the OnePlus phone is great as long as you don't have Verizon.

I'd agree with this. I used to be very into jailbreaking and customizing my phone as much as possible, but it always caused issues down the line. I ended up just preferring my phone to work perfectly as is with no issues. iPhone fits this best in my opinion. Always good to see improvements on the Android side as it hopefully pushes Apple. I still haven't found a reason to switch though.

The next iPhone is not going to start at $1000. That is complete clickbait horse**** and it worked--look at all of the discussion going on about it.

I think the price is ok only if the new iphone has real innovations, if just super minor changes and another new color. . . this giant company will be done in future

Times have changed since then. I did as well. In the new age of carriers, where everyone has LTE, people aren't switching because of one phone.
If anything, that is a reason TO switch, because these days if you spend most of your time in the city, any carrier will work just fine. Compared to when the iPhone first came out you'd be switching between carriers that had 3G vs 2G, or CDMA vs GSM, or CDMA 3G that capped at like 2Mbps vs 20Mbps on HSPA 4G.
