9to5mac is saying that it would be better than the current iPad with a "Retina" like display and front facing camera.
Well if it was that vs. an old 10" iPad, sure, that has a lot of merit. But I can only assume that if a new 7" got those features, there would be correlating new 10" iPads with those same new features. Right? Maybe not immediately, but surely not too long after.

Maybe they could rename the iPod Touch to the iPad Nano. Cause really, that's what it is. And the 7" could be the iPad Mini. Then it's just a matter of picking your ideal size.

My Opinion on the 7 inch

I would like it if the 7 inch came at a lower price point, Maybe $400

But most people would say "HEY! FOR $400 YOU CAN GET A 64 GB TOUCH!" Well, Having the choice of a larger screen or a more portable device would be Nice. More of a Market option for people :)

Either iPad would be nice though...

But depending on the price and GB I would consider it if it was cheap.

I highly doubt that Apple will release a 7" screen iPad for $299 when a 3.5" iPod Touch costs that much.

In fact, I don't see a price point really working for this 7" model so it doesn't seem very likey.

Choices are agonizing for consumers.

Look at the threads we have now. Choices are also confusing for people. Look at the apps in the app store now. There could be, but isn't universal compatibility. I have to buy an app twice, or use an app at 1/2 size or press a button with a 2x on it that makes it look like a blurry mess.

For the sake of Apple, they need to focus on a few things and do them right. Remember when Coke changed the recepie or when Pepsi went clear? When you dominate a market, stick to what got you there.

Oh, ya, so no, I wouldn't get the mythical 7.

There will be no 7" iPad.

iPhone/iPod touch | iPad | Macbook

Apple said the iPad filled in the gap so they won't add in another device between the first two.

Based on your flawed logic, Apple should only make one desktop model and one laptop model. Hmmm.

I don't think it's going to happen, it would just end up as silly as the bicycle tyre debacle (26" & 29" I can understand, but WTF with the perceived demand for a 650B? Where will it end?) where there would be too many size choices. Apart from being confusing to the average consumer, this would result in there being smaller runs (instead of a million in one size you sell half a mil in each size) which means that they end ip costing more thanks to that little acknowledged concept "Economies of Scale".

No. 9 inches is perfect imho. Not to big not too small. (I know, that's what she said)

well, the 7" iPad would have to offer more than just the smaller size. &" doesn't help me a lot with portability. If the 7 inch version was a lot cheaper (50% cheaper) and had a retina display and had a camera and had twice the battery life I would think about it.

But if it's just a smaller version for essentially the same price I would not buy it.

What he said. From my experience, Apple usually does this to it's products. I'm not sure if they'd be able to get twice the battery life, but they surely could make it with a smaller retina display. I could care less about a camera on an iPad. I'd use it for mainly reading, which is what I think these smaller iPad rumors have stemmed from.

Nothing wrong with a smaller screen. I think I'd prefer to have one that's easier to carry around.

I agree. the 10" is portable, but not as portable as the new 6" Amazon Kindle. Apple always toots over the fact that their products are so thin. And I love that, but I feel that another smaller iPad would be way more portable than the 10". Then maybe I'd actually see people using them outside of their homes.

Srsly? Choices are not hard. For example: Apple offers 3 different laptops (in 3 different sizes), 3 different desktops (iMac in 2 different sizes), 4 different iPods, and (what would have been) 2 different iPhone 4's and 3GS's in a variety of sizes and configurations. And they still make a killing. Another size iPad would be welcomed. Sure, people would gripe over Apple releasing a newer, smaller version of a product that is seemingly awesome already, but I'd put money on it selling like hot cakes.

I didn't vote in the poll, but assuming all other specs are the same (1024x768 screen, OS, etc.), I think my wife would prefer a smaller screen to better match the size of a Kindle. 10" is a little too big for her purse.

I'm happy with my iPad. wouldn't get it any smaller or bigger.

I understand people would like a smaller/bigger iPad but for goodness sake...Don't split the App store up. I don't wanna see apps like "Twitter S" "Twitter M" "Twitter L"

App store is doing my head in. I wish all the people would update their apps for the iPhone 4's retina display, and bring out more decent iPad apps. And apple please make the bloody iPad App store same as the iPhone.

No 7" interest. Sounds like an attempt to downsize the iPad to bolster lost laptop sales.

iPad is great as is just needs flash and full resolution YouTube on 3G

Look around, should I get this or that, 16 or 32, Wifi or 3G, iPhone 4 or iPad, which first, which 2nd, laptop or ipad, Powerbook or Macbook? There is at least a few threads a day on choices. So yes, seriously for consumers, choices are hard.

I can see Apple making a 7" iPad. I owned the iPad for a couple of months and it did have some ups and downs. If Apple makes this 7" iPad it will probably be like a 7.1" - 7.3" screen. I would get it if it had a FaceTime camera, possibly higher res. screen, and if was $349-$379 for 16GB.

I would buy it if it had the retina display. It would make a superb e-reader, and still be large enough for media and large-screen apps.

I can see why some people would want an iDevice that is bigger than an iPod touch/iPhone but smaller than an iPad, but I just don't see where it would fit pricewise. Currently, the iPod touch is $300 for the 32Gig, and $400 for the 64Gig. The cheapest WiFi iPad is $500. What are you going to price the lowest end 7-inch iPad at, $450? Even if you push the price of the touch down a bit, say, $350 for the high-end touch, then the lowest end 7-inch would be $400. Either way, there would be a lot of price overlap with the 7-inch and 9-inch models, which would lead to lots of customer confusion over which one to get, which in turn would lead to lots of logistical difficulty in figuring out how many of each model to make. If I were Tim Cook, I'd be arguing vehemently against this! :D

7 inches would probably handle the current iPhone app resolution better though, right?

I think you would still have the problem of unmodified iPhone Apps looking jumbo sized on a 7" screen. For example an unmodified iPhone Twitter client would still only display 6 tweets when 10 could be displayed at a sensible font-size on a 7" screen.

Actually, I want a smaller iPad for travel. I want a larger screen than my iPhone, but not so large as the iPad. I want one for maps and for travel guides. I can see buying both sizes.

I want a USB port though. I'm hoping the next gen will have one. If the iPad had a USB port I could transfer my photos from my DSLR to a hard drive and I wouldn't have to carry around my lame net book.
