9to5mac is saying that it would be better than the current iPad with a "Retina" like display and front facing camera.

If you are stating that in verbatim then 9to5mac is pulling cr@p from their a$s because a 7" device with retina display won't come cheaper than $1,500.

I'm torn.

Some days I feel the iPad is slightly too big and a little cumbersome (usually when I'm lounging around in bed), other days I feel its perfect sized... (when its propped up on a desk, or I'm at a table, or sitting in a chair...

Hm

Look around, should I get this or that, 16 or 32, Wifi or 3G, iPhone 4 or iPad, which first, which 2nd, laptop or ipad, Powerbook or Macbook? There is at least a few threads a day on choices. So yes, seriously for consumers, choices are hard.

You are so right about that. I see way too many of those threads. :D I guess I'm just biased because I usually know what I want for my needs. I thought that most people who have trouble deciding have needs for graphics cards, CPU, and RAM, and not so much for Wi-Fi/3G and GB storage. But I think it'd be easier for an iPad decision. With iPhone and the current iPad you just have to pick your GB size and 3G option. If there were a smaller iPad, it'd be deciding the size of the iPad, GB storage (which may not be that much if marketed towards readers), ad 3G option. It just doesn't seem like something I'd be pulling hair over. What do you think about the smaller iPad rumor?

I just had a thought which I haven't seen mentioned in the 7inch threads - how would typing be on that size? With the current size iPad, the landscape keyboard is almost the same size as a regular keyboard (minus the numbers/symbols). But keyboards on a 7inch iPad would be smaller. Would it be small enough to comfortably thumb-type? I'm just not sure. Anyone has any ideas?

I like my 10" iPad. I do quite a bit of reading on it and I don't think that it would be as easy to read the PDF's and other content as easily using the smaller (7") screen. The fact that the current iPad's screen is almost the size of a letter page is a big plus for me.

The amazon kindle is 6" and I think that common books is smaller than 10".

Well, today's rumor says the 7" has the same resolution as the 10", so it's just smaller but feature-identical... so it probably wouldn't be any cheaper... it might even cost more.

I'm probably going to look for a used or refurb iPad in another month or so.

Don't know how that would affect price, but if this rumor is true, wouldn't all the onscreen controls get smaller, making it easier to hit the wrong ones / harder to hit the target?

The big screen means a big body, which in turn allows for the big battery. Having said that, a smaller screen could also translate to less battery drain. I like the current screen size, any smaller and I couldn't touch type on it. I'd actually like a bigger one if they could keep the weight down. Maybe a 12" iPad....

I really doubt that it would cost more. Purely just a guess though

I don't own an iPad, and would prefer the 7inch IF and one IF it has the same stats at eh 10. This would mean same resolution, RAM, ect.

For my first iPad no, I would get the 10inch. Once time to upgrade comes around I may consider the 7 based on my experiences

A 399€, 7" iPad with 512MB RAM and a faster processor? It would sell a lot.
The thing that annoys me is that the current iPad will be upgraded to a faster RAM and processor after less than a year of the first generation. It's not already been launched in all the world.
I don't think that the original iPad will be updated along with the new 7inch iPad release. I would expect April of next year and possibly with the rumored A5 which should be ready then.

Do we poor devs need ANOTHER screen resolution? First the iPad, then the iPhone 4.

The report today claims that the 7" model would have the same 1024x768 resolution as the current 9.7" model.

But I don't really see the point of a 7" model. It's not particularly more portable (still won't fit in a pocket and any bag would easily hold a 10") and would only feel more cramped. Part of the greatness of the iPad is it feels much larger than it's 9.7" screen would indicate it should, you hold it close to your face and it feels almost cinematic sometimes. Why mess with that?

^ Love the album in your avatar.

Regarding the 7" iPad: I can't see Apple making one. Even if they did, I wouldn't buy it. I'm perfectly happy with the current iPad's size.
