I don't think I'd put the CPU in a node, but certainly anything that goes on a PCI-E bus might take a pretty negligible speed hit on a node.

The only stuff I've seen is over GigE and you just send chunks like a You tube buffer. So it has it's purposes but better a video render farm than audio DAW. Your PCI bus on an Audio DAW would most likely be latency sensitive DSP module processors which are themselves an extended processor to limit latency on the host. Or even more sensitive DA/AD conversion. Not much else would be there.

No, I don't think I would. I'd replace with an iMac, not a laptop. My 1,1 MP is getting on a bit, so the improved speed would be a great bonus. I'd need an SSD in addition to the hard drive, which takes care of the multiple drive support in the MP (I just use two of the four bays). I don't use any of the expansion slots, so I wouldn't miss those.

One thing I'd gain is more desk space. That would be nice. I'd guess that an iMac would be quieter as well. And somewhat cheaper than a MP.

I am seriously considering getting an iMac for my next computer.

My Mac Pro is everything I love in a computer.
A gr8 Mac (OS X, iLife, FCP X, etc.), and a excellent gaming PC... all in one.

It's the early 2008 model. With 8 GB RAM and just installed the Radeon HD 5870 and it's still going strong. Very strong.

IF Apple were to EOL the Mac Pro, I would rush to get the hex-core 3.33 GHz.

Yes I would

If they stop making them, I will start building them

Same here.

Count me in as well. If they don't update the Mac Pro & discontinue it, I will build a powerful Hackint0sh.......with Snow Leopard! I have iOS on my phone & iPad. I don't need/want it on my Mac Pro !!!!

The Mac Pro offers the flexibility and expandability only the Mac Pro can offer.

So no, it cannot be supplemented by an iMac, much less the Mac mini.

iMac not an Option at all

I would NEVER Buy a ****** iMac!
Restrictions like glossy Screen, non-user-replaceable Hard drive, Notebook Technology are no specs for a professional machine.
I have some PCIe cards also I want to use. And the internal 4 HD's with Raid possibility in the MacPro are really important for me.

So my 2008 MacPro will last als long as it doesn't die, and then I will switch to PC an say goodbye to Apple.

Hope the keep the MacPro alive, but I highly doubt it. Sad... I once switched from Windows, and probably I will switch back.

There seems to be alot of negetive comments regarding the future of the Pro. As far as we know Apple is waiting for Intel to deliver the Xeon X5 CPUs for the next gen Mac Pro. March of this year was the rumoured delivery date.

Never ever would I swap my Mac Pros with iMac's.
And yeh, I would dearly miss a Mac Pro for my line of work, iMacs don't have the processing power, or graphics performance, or expandability which I need.

Have you seen the 3.33 Hex in the Logic Pro Benchmark Test? Its certanly the biggest bang for buck!

Hello All,
I was wondering if you replaced your Mac Pro with a top spec iMac or MacBook Pro, would you miss it bearing in mind you may have more than enough CPU power youll ever need inside the smaller machines.

Seriously?? That may be true for quad core owners, but the idea of an iMac or MBP coming anywhere near the ability of a 2x Xeon with 4 Hard Drive bays, 2 optical drives, 8 RAM slots, HD5870 graphics .... you see where I'm going

I mean, to use an old Pro such as a 2007 model that one may posess gathering dust & as a project, purchase the necessary parts to make it in to a newer version at a fraction of the cost.

See, that's the thing. People have tried, but it usually ends up being the same cost or more.

Not to mention the 2009 and newer Mac Pros have a substantially different internal layout.

It will cost more than buying a new computer straight off.

Buying a used machine will be pricey. Then you need to pay for parts. Those processors are very expensive. That's assuming everything will fit… which it won't—as mentioned the layout on later machines is different.

Me four!!

If it were to be discontinued, I would regret it, but I'd have no probs switching back to Windoze. I'll prolly get two more years out of my '09 quad if I upgrade it with a W3565 or hexacore, and by then Ivy Bridge will be old news so who knows what's next.

I was very happy with Ubuntu 11.04 on my Asus laptop, but 11.10 is not as sturdy. Nonetheless, if my preferred software would be made available for Linux I'd prolly leave OSX anyway, as I don't really like where Apple is taking it anyway.

I wouldn't replace my Mac Pro with an iMac. They're not the same kind of computers. They're not built for the same purposes nor or they built for the same users.

If my Mac Pro had to go away I would get an HP Z600 or Z800.

Will NEVER miss the Mac Pro

I will never miss my Mac Pro because I am going to have it buried with me.
If and when the time comes that new Mac Pro's are not available, then I will continue to upgrade and or repair my latest Mac Pro.
There used to be a place in a city I lived in called "Old Cars For Fun." It was a specialty auto salvage yard. All the cars there were 20+ years old. A great place to go if you were into restoring classic cars.
If Apple abandons it's work horse machine and stops building the Mac Pro, I can see someone having a thriving business with parts for Mac Pro's. I think I would call it "Mac Pro's for business."
Do not get me wrong, the toy iMac, (One of which I own) is a capable machine if you want to Email, browse the web or type out a text document. So I will leave that for my children's inheritance. But when it comes time to work in Photoshop or video editing, The iMac just cannot run in the same league as my Mac Pro.
I just hope that when I am dead and gone,....someone will keep paying the electric and broadband bill so I can keep enjoying my Mac Pro. Also tell the landscape people not to run over the cords while mowing around my grave site!

I'm with ya on that! I've had my MP 1,1 for 6 years now, and it still smokes my MBP.

If Apple decided to kill off the MP then I'll be buying the nicest one I can as soon as possible. If they do come out with a new version this year, I'll be purchasing one in early 2013. If I could get another 6-7 years out of that computer, I'm would hope something similar would come along to replace it, but who knows. I don't want to think that that might not happen.

No, I would not miss my Mac Pro.

What I would miss was being able to use OS X for my in and out daily office tasks. Windows 7 or Fedora just don't feel quite right.

I currently have first generation 27 iMac i5 2.66/16GB/Ect.. and now I am looking into other options. I am waiting till the end of summer to really look at what's on the plate at that time, but I have been tempted to build a PC again.

If I end up buying the new iMac 2012, I will also probably build myself a killer gaming PC simply for gaming. But if a new Mac Pro comes out that really surprises me, I might just buy that and have the best of both worlds.

No more Mac Pro? No more Apple.

If Apple would drop the Mac Pro, my next pro machine would be a PC.

I have to agree unfortunately.

I'd first try a hackintosh, and if that didn't work I'd have to go back to the dark side.

The Mac Pro is crucial in my setup, without it Apple loose my money.
