Would you prefer In-Display TouchID w/No Notch or FaceID with Notch?

  • FaceID w/Notch because I know that will need to take up space anyways.

  • TouchID w/o Notch because I don't like the notch that much, I don't care about face tracking/recog

I'm fine with the notch as a physical characteristic, I just don't want apps to have access to the portions to the left/right of it (at most they should be allowed to change the background color, but nothing more).

Apple appears to have missed two opportunities by allowing apps access to those regions (which they can still correct, because this is software choices):

1. Security - by denying apps access to those regions, they could, for example, display an indicator when they are asking for Apple ID credentials so that it becomes difficult to spoof this (would require an OS-level vulnerability to exploit)
2. Being able to show status such as time and battery life 100% of the time would've been nice. There are some apps that are unnecessarily full-screen where I'd love to see the status indicators.

I hope Apple is sitting on an option to enable something like this, and that we may see it in the future.

Im saying it "could" be done in the future...
obviously I know whats available with current technology. I dont see it being far off with what I imagine.

Might be years to invent a camera lens that doesn’t need light to function. You aren’t going to be able to reduce the sensors that much without degrading the photos. Otherwise I guess you can put it in the frame for your sky lens photo.

The engineering expertise on this forum is amazing, wonder why Apple goes with the engineers it has instead of these experts. Oh wait ....

The notch is here to stay it looks like. Best choice with existing technology IMO.

I think it's part of the human condition to resist change from what we're used to.
I agree that the notch is different and some may find it offputting, but the question is, does that one feature detract from all the other improvements of the iPhone X.

The notch is not a "feature". FaceID is a feature and the notch is the trade off that Apple made to implement it--and it is a trade off.

It may turn out that when millions of people actually start using the phone and app makers adapt, it will not be a big deal. Or, it may turn out that it becomes an ongoing annoyance that when this model and future notch models get reviewed the notch ends up in the "cons" category.

It also wouldn't surprise me if we started seeing more notches in Android competitors--just because.

No worries. I usually prefer the ugly women to go home with someone other than myself when at the club...

I have never gone home with an ugly woman

Woke up with a few though ;)

And sadly I suspect a few are saying the same about me :(

The notch doesn't bother me in the slightest.

That said, without having used FaceID, it's impossible to form an appropriate opinion on how much I'll like it when I start using it next month.

The reason I see/hear to keep Touch ID is the ability to use it w/o looking at the phone ("I can pull it out of my pocket and use Apple Pay w/o even looking it at")

Which I think it a very legit reason.

But.

Was the intention of Touch ID under the screen to allow a tactile experience to make sure your finger is where it is supposed to be?

It seems you'd have to make sure (by looking) that your finger is in the proper place on the screen.
Might as well get rid of the button and have the camera do its thing.

I am surprised with all the talk of FaceID being the future, the TouchID without notch is winning out. I think the notch is inevitable since there is probably no way to "hide" those electronics without creating more bezels, but it is worth having a notch for in the worst case.

Everyone will vote Touch ID under display, but once the X is in use and people realize that Face ID is better, they’ll want it.
Ha yeah right I’ve had my x going on 2 months now and miss Touch ID. It was a lot better then Face ID IMO.

And now the One Plus 6T actually has in screen touch ID.
Yes and it’s ugly as hell. Believe that Apple wants a sensor that is under the entire display not one in a built in location. Good luck reaching for that blindly.

It wouldn't be blind. The screen can just always be on, showing the location of the sensor.
Works as long as the phone is connected to a power plug. That way the battery doesn’t die and as long as the image moves so it doesn’t burn in. Oops it can’t move.

The image could absolutely move in that scenario. The sensor is not an image.

The sensor can’t move at all. It’s stationary and butt ugly. Better off having the entire screen as a fingerprint sensor. No need for an ugly button. Put a finger any finger on anyplace on the screen. But hey Qualcomm has got to make their money.

What button are you referring to? There is no button with an in display fingerprint sensor, it scans through the OLED display there’s nothing physically disruptive to the display or image. Building a full display sensor would require thicker display systems which is why we won’t really see it until Micro LED technology comes around but Apple most likely won’t implement the fingerprint technology at all.

You do understand that apple owns a patent to do just that. Would rather have a fingerprint reader scanner anyplace, but the screen. It’s an ugly design, but Apple isn’t going to do that until Micro LED comes out. This is Androids way of admitting they can’t bear or even come close to FaceId. The sensor is in the same damned place. It can’t actually move around.
