Would you prefer In-Display TouchID w/No Notch or FaceID with Notch?

  • FaceID w/Notch because I know that will need to take up space anyways.

  • TouchID w/o Notch because I don't like the notch that much, I don't care about face tracking/recog

I am surprised with all the talk of FaceID being the future, the TouchID without notch is winning out. I think the notch is inevitable since there is probably no way to "hide" those electronics without creating more bezels, but it is worth having a notch for in the worst case.

Honestly what I think or you think doesn't matter. It's what the design engineers at Apple thinks because that is what they will go with. I agree where else do you put all the electronics there has to be a place for it, so the compromise if you want to call it that is what they came up with. Apple has a patent on Touch ID on the display, but it would appear that for the near term they have decided Face ID is their best bet.

I personally don't mind the notch... and I absolutely hate Touch ID in comparison to Face ID. But I use my hands a lot and when they get wet Touch ID simply doesn't work with any moisture on your fingers... Face ID works perfectly. I've worn glasses, sunglasses, hats of various types and my Face ID always unlocks my phone wet face and all. :)

I get the vote in this thread, but you know the only vote that counts? Those that say we don't like Face ID and actually don't buy these phones... the only thing that Apple will EVER respond too is a huge drop in sales. But at the end of the day... many of those that voted they would rather the notch go away and have Touch ID, likely have a phone with Face ID.

Apple can’t get TouchId on the display to work with an OLED screen that’s why Qualcomm came around with a workaround. Thing is Apple doesn’t really like compromises especially when they don’t have to pay the Qualcomm tax on it. I like faveid much better then TouchId which seems to fail half the time on my IPad.

You do understand that apple owns a patent to do just that. Would rather have a fingerprint reader scanner anyplace, but the screen. It’s an ugly design, but Apple isn’t going to do that until Micro LED comes out. This is Androids way of admitting they can’t bear or even come close to FaceId. The sensor is in the same damned place. It can’t actually move around.

Let me get this straight, you’re telling me that an in display fingerprint scanner is an ugly design? In what sense? You cannot physically see it. You wouldn’t even know it was there in the first place. And they can but Apple also has a major cash grab on patents related to FaceID that were very broad to isolate them to hold a lead. They also did have a very functional in display fingerprint scanner actually but scrapped it because it was able to be matured much faster by other companies and left them uncomfortable with being able to set a standards gap. Still though the argument for the sensor being stationary is about as equal as the argument about FaceID being unable to unlock the device from obscure directions. The current issue with that is being fixed next year with a very nice 180 degree field of view receiver lens with specicifc distortion calibration software to decode the IR map printed off the face. Likewise the dot projector will be more complex with more of a pyramid distribution to achieve the necessary range.

Would have either a hardware fingerprint scanner or a fingerprint scanner where you can place your finger anywhere on a screen. You have to know where the scanner is or how will you know where to put your finger. It has to have some visibility otherwise it’s actually useless. Apple bought the company that created FaceId.

You will know based on the display producing an image for you. But you still don’t see the actual sensor it’s rather nice actually. I do see your point don’t get me wrong just saying it’s really not that bad of an option, the space to scan is very generous and works with the natural resting ergonomics of your thumb for placement. I liked TouchID because I picked up my phone and it was unlocking before I needed to get into it. I don’t like the delay of staring at my phone while I wait for it to unlock and have since turned off FaceID

Or maybe company’s that use android think Face ID is stupid. Like some of us customers do. I’ve had my X since late November of last year and I hate Face ID. I’m hoping that the s10 is amazing and has the FPS under the display. I’ll most likely jump to it.

Yeah...just like android oems thought the notch was stupid. Not really buying it.

Hope you enjoy your s10, heard Samsung was ditching the headphone jack and increasing their prices....just like apple.

Personally, I’m loving Face ID and the iPhone XS Max.

Face ID is only going to improve. Next year's Face ID will almost undoubtably work in any orientations (feature parity with new iPad Pros) and if it works in wider angle (closer distance), it will be practically perfect for me. And the notch will only get smaller over time (it really only bothers me in landscape orientation anyway).

Touch ID, as good as it was, requires touch the screen with a bare finger. Face ID lets you use the phone with gloves on (capacity winter gloves).

And registering your face is far easier than registering your fingers.

Are those even required any more? I bought a pack of work gloves (10 pack) from Home Depot. There were lightweight gloves, almost gardening gloves, with rubberized fingers/palm and would work with iPhone X without trouble.

What button are you referring to? There is no button with an in display fingerprint sensor, it scans through the OLED display there’s nothing physically disruptive to the display or image. Building a full display sensor would require thicker display systems which is why we won’t really see it until Micro LED technology comes around but Apple most likely won’t implement the fingerprint technology at all.
Agree with you, I don't know what the hell he's talking about. I've seen it and it's not visible. How can you say it looks good or bad when it's invisible under the screen?

Now you have to admit if they could do a full screen without a notch with camera under the display you would like that better then the notch. Anyone would. I’m not complaining much about the notch I’m more pissed about Face ID. That is one stupid ass “feature” I cannot stand it. Touch ID was way better.

FaceID, best by far. Once you use it regularly on the iPhone it’s a pain to use Touch ID on the iPad, feels like going backwards. That’s the primary reason I’m replacing my 10.5 pro with a new iPad.

You have to admit that the android oems also labeled the notch stupid before the entire android industry proceeded to directly copy it and badly at that....because they left the bezel at the bottom/chin, now those were some ugly lopsided devices. or you have Samsung with a dated forehead and chin.

Face ID > Touch ID.

No, I actually prefer the notch to no notch if it meant giving up Face ID.

There is a reason I ordered the new iPad pros with Face ID even though there is nothing wrong with my 2017 512gb cellular iPad Pro....just Touch ID

Perhaps you set it up wrong?

Quoted for the truth.
Touch ID is archaic compared to a passive biometric solution like Face ID.

I think he means you have to have something displayed on the screen to show its position. Rather than seeing the actual sensor itself.

For me this is the biggest drawback, you have no tactile indication of where the sensor is so by the time you look at the screen to see where you put your finger you may as well just have face unlock.
If it was over the entire screen it would be a different issue.

Samsung made fun of the notch not the other android makers. And Samsung will not copy it. They are supposed to be coming out with a full edge to edge screen on the s10, it will have a little hole for the camera that’s it. Face ID isn’t the worse of my issues now this pos iPhone X won’t even stay connected to the internet. WiFi or cellular.
