Would you rather have Touch ID under the screen or Face ID?

Wonder how many people who voted for Touch-ID actually have an X with Face-ID or just voting on the basis of what they think or heard
That’s very true but the main obstacle stopping more people trying FaceID is the fact it’s only available on a phone that costs over a grand. This poll may show very different results once it’s available to a larger proportion of iPhone users when the 6.1” LCD comes out.

Touch ID here. Just sold my X. Back to SE, iPad mini 4 combo. Too many situations where i couldn't get into my phone without looking at it
Maybe Apple should make an iPhone with Touch ID and WITHOUT a screen for the people that need it to unlock without looking at it. Seriously, who uses their phone without looking at it?

For as much as these devices are costing now a days I don’t see why we don’t have both

Apple probably could provide both biometric options if they wanted to with Face ID and touch ID. But we know from their past history that they’re not always about providing the most options and choices, when they want to move forward just with one feature that they believe works best for the future of security.

Unfortunately I have to acknowledge that you are correct

I strongly believe what you say is true. Face ID is what they chose to focus on. Whether you think that’s good or not, I seriously doubt they were ever considering more than one method for biometric unlocking. And when you look at it this way, Face ID looks like a more futuristic, forward thinking way of doing it. It’s so like Apple to fall in love with something like this and brute force it, even if it has certain kinks to be worked out.

Personally, I am glad they chose Face ID. I think it’s ultimately better than Touch ID but not only that - it’s more fun to use and offers more cool functionality (like attention awareness, portrait mode for selfies, Animoji, etc). Whatever your thoughts however, the fact remains that Apple does Apple moves and focusing solely on Face ID is such an Apple move.

I’d say there’s no need for the “unfortunately” part. It’s for the better, especially in the grand scheme of things.

This is what I don’t understand, if your gonna bill it as security, why not include both, scan the face, then the finger, basically 2 factor authentication for the lock screen.

FaceID is supposed to be rapid quick (I don’t have an X, can’t comment) so by the time your thumb was scanned it should unlock, it shouldn’t be any slower than Touch ID normally is. That would truly be the best for security.

Convenience and simplicity. As long as the security is “good enough”, people will always go for simplicity. And guess what, for 99% use cases, Face ID is good enough.

I thought ‘portrait mode’ was also available on the none FaceID inclusive iPhone 8 Plus? I could be wrong though.

But I’m still not understanding why the iPhone needs two forms of biometric security. If Apple has one reliable form of biometric security that they fully trust is the future, then I think that’s only counterproductive that they would offer touch ID as a secondary, which they want the consumer to know how secure Face ID really is with 3D facial mapping. And as I mentioned before, Apple has never been really much about options, they provide the consumer exactly what they think is best suited and that’s how it’s always been.

Face ID _is_quick. Is it appropriate to compare Face ID being a first generation form of biometric security to a second generation touch ID? Probably not. Really they’re two different things. But many have attested that face ID is quick and simplistic when opening, and others have said it’s not, so its A matter of opinion told others are saying what’s ‘fast’. But you have to remember Face ID re-trains if it does fail where it improves the users recognition for the next unlock.

For the record, since you can’t attest to face ID’s speed, I think its only fair once you have the opportunity to actually use it, then provide your feedback as far as what you consider ‘rapid fast’. But just from reading anecdotal opinions on Macrumors, hundreds of members have said how Fast Face ID is and just a glimpse unlocks the Phone. Everyone likely has different expectations.
