How are early adopters getting the shaft when they are getting the upgrade the same time as every other iPad user?

Because apple will be structuring this update most likely around the first revision of the ipad hardware. The software update will prob be one of their marketing tactics to sell the new hardware.

So people are mad that a product that was JUST released not more than a week ago won't have updated software for another 5 months???

I understand they are talking about some neat and necessary additions, but IT JUST CAME OUT! :p

But it's also supposed to use the same OS as the iPhone.

Let me elaborate why I think this is a (short term) fail.

Quite simply - the iPhone is less of a productivity device than the iPad. So while it's great that we will be getting 4.0 on the iphone - the ability to multitask and have the upgraded email app alone is reason enough to launch it on the iPad at the same time.

+1. This is really strange and if it does coincide with a hardware change I will be, well...ready to give this one to my wife and get a new one. :D

uh, its based on software that's been out for almost 3 years now...

Long wait. Tells me Apple needs more developers.

It makes sense. Apple are concentrating more of their limited resources on a platform that has millions of users before developing for the iPad, which doesn't.

Oh for gods sake...

The iPad is brand new, Apple are going to need more time to develop OS 4 for it because, amongst other things, they need to incorporate bug fixes that won't be needed for the iPhone / iPod Touch lines because that hardware is far more mature. There's a ton of other reasons for staggering the rollout this time round too (giving devs more time to build and test the more complex apps for iPad, changes to the built-in apps and the probable logjam of iPad apps for approval that they're already facing just off the top of my head).

Come on folks, just a wee bit of common sense wouldn't go amiss here.

We will be fine, at least it is coming

I got the iphone 3gs and waiting for the iPad 3G. I feel bad for those who got iphone 3g/itouch 2g or less folks. Other than that! I am happy! I can wait!

I'm not exactly pleased as punch about having to wait until Fall, however, the damn device was just released.

I really don't think we're going to see a refresh to the iPad this Fall. Apple is likely keeping their 1 year revision cycles like with the iPod and iPhone. Even with Macs, the MacBook Pro has been going 10 months now without a refresh.

By the time the fall rolls around there will be a newer iPad.

Ha Ha. Your kidding me! Come on your not serious are you? There is no way there will be a hardware update this year? Heck they can't even do a MacBook Pro update more than once a year, let alone an iPhone and they are going to do a hardware update? Come back next year when there is a new iPad.

What makes that likely when every other iPhone OS device has been updated on an annual basis? Slight chance of a storage bump, but anything else is unlikely in the Fall.

Well, after using the iPad, multitasking will be pretty garbage to me on an iPhone. It is small, and i don't really have my face in my iPhone that much to need multitasking on it. Unlike most, i didn't buy my phone for games.

It sucks that the ipad has to wait a while, considering that the space it provides benefits the most from an update like this, but i don't agree that we got "screwed".

So Apple are improving their products, and giving people what they have been asking for, but they suck since it will take a few months. Bloody hell, grow up.

Ahh but how long in between the first iphone price cut? Remember it was only a few months. Maybe using "hardware revision" is the worng term, but I bet Apple will be making some adjustments this fall and leveraging the price and software update to do so.

Or, it's because the team developing iPhone 4.0 didn't find out about the iPad until we all did, so they need extra time to develop for it.

.......... So the iphones and ipod touch will be able to do things the iPad can't for atleast 2-3 months....?

iPhones and iPod Touch have been able to do things the iPad couldn't for 3 years. What's another 6 months?

Yeah, no kidding, if they are going to update the iPad every year like the iPhone, that'll be right around the corner from a 2nd Gen iPad... hmmmm.....
That's an assumption we're making right now, though. Maybe they won't. And maybe the update will be so minimal it really won't matter that much - add that front-facing camera so many are complaining about, but the others will be just minor updates - 32/64/128gb size increase, and not much else, just like the Iphone got only minor updates last year. Give it a couple of years before it's really something to get excited about.

I think the reason why they're holding off for the iPad is to refine the OS 4.0 for iPad. Who knows, maybe we'll get even more features than the iPhone is getting!

Well this is certainly the hope for the optimists among us!

I'd still rather have a file system of some kind :(

Really seriously doubt it. Price points and hardware won't change until next year. Not even a storage bump. Stop whining. You've had your iPad less than a week and they haven't even announced when Summer or Fall is for these devices. Early adopters didn't get screwed, they got their iPads. I could buy one when 4.0 comes out and it still won't be any different than yours except for the fact you will have used yours the entire time up to that.
