Is this verified? There definitely was some team working on the iPad version of iphone OS and that team did know about the 4.0

Nothing verified, but its what makes sense in software development and the secret nature of Apple development. Sure, of course the iPad development team knew about 4.0. But, why introduce an unstable OS for a new product. It was better to take 3.0, call it 3.2 and introduce all the iPad related features.

4.0 is at the end of feature development and now they are fixing, polishing and testing. Again, why add a new platform into the end of a development cycle. Its ALWAYS a bad idea, once you hit a feature freeze you hit a feature freeze. Then, after 4.0 is released they will need a few rounds of last minute fixes ... and its off to polishing 4.0 for the iPad.

I suppose that it is all rumours and speculation but given how secretive Apple are it's logical that the iPad wouldn't have been discussed with the general iPhone OS team.

Merging the changes from the 3.2 code that the iPad team developed with the changes for the 4.0 code is going to take time. Plus, some of the iPad Apps (eg. Mail) will have to be significantly changed to take advantage of the 4.0 features. While I'm disappointed that the update isn't until autumn I'm not exactly surprised either.

It makes sense from a business and consumer relationship perspective. The iphone has millions of established users right now and the ipad only has a couple of hundred thousand. They can only dedicate so many resources to developing, debugging, and releasing the updates to each system at a time. There very well could be some ipad optimized features surely that need there own time to be developed. They can't just release everything to everyone all at once because there aren't enough resources. That and everything would come out much later. Thats why there was no worldwide release of the ipad and the 3G model is coming out later. They could have waited to release it all at the same time, but then everyone would have been griping about why it took so long to release them to begin with. iPhone customers are going to be the priority here.

The ipad early adopters will have plenty to keep them occupied while they (not WE yet, ill be getting it soon enough) wait for the update. There are only some features that should be released immediately like native printing services is really important for something like the ipad, but everything else can wait it seems. Also, just because they didn't mention it in the keynote, doesn't mean that native printing won't be available on the ipad. There are supposedly 100 or more user features available for this update. They are only really concerned with touching upon the big guns right now and since native printing concerns more ipad users than iphone I would think (not necessarily number wise, but ratio) they don't really need to make a big deal of it.....Or it could just not be there :p

I really don't understand why they would keep it secret with the iphone OS team. It would be counterproductive. The people who worked on the iPad Os most likely are from that very iphone OS team. If you want to scale an os over 3 different platforms you make sure it works on all of them before hand. Especially with changes on the system level that is on OS4

the fact its going to take longer for the Ipad variant of OS4 in a way is a good thing, it proves that its far more than a upscaled version of Iphone OS. i can understand why they chose it continue development with OS3 as its an existing stable platform to work from, even though 4 is around the corner it was not use now so there was no point pushing it for the Ipad.

hopefully now we will get some more specific Ipad featured in OS4

And had Apple waited to release the iPad until V.4 was ready people would still be pissing and moaning, sheesh, enjoy what you have for now, at least you know it's coming.

Total speculation and more likely wrong than right.

But it seems to me they just couldn't fit major functions like multitask into 3.2 for iPad so they moved it to 4.0. You would think if they had this good of an idea for multitask it would have been a no brainer to release the iPad with it.

this forum seems to have been flooded with a lot of whiny babies lately :p.

i, for one, am happy to hear of the upcoming change and will patiently wait for it to come out. The iPad is brand new and fully satisfies my needs at this point, any upcoming change is just icing on the cake.

Yes I forgot I should let corporations totally dictate when I should hope or want to have a function  Obviously all the talk of wanting multitasking wasn't asking for a miracle.

This is really hilarious. As soon as I saw them say that it wasn't going to be released until the Fall for the iPad, I knew people were going to start whining. Apple just can't win with some people. First they squeal about lack of multitasking and then when they come out with it they squeal about when they are going to get it.

If you really want something to squeal about, check out the iPhone 4.0 page on Apple's site:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/preview-iphone-os/

Check out the bottom where it talks about multitasking compatibility. Notice any device missing from the list? ;) I'm sure it's just an oversight, but one more thing to worry about.

Oh they came out with it? So you mean I can get it now?
BTW You know a future iphone is going to have 4g. So people better not talk about wanting it because it sure is coming!

We want multitasking, and we want it now. It's that simple.

F%^& you're right!!!! That could be a mistake or a pretty major problem. Multi-tasking on the Nano seems like a no brainer to me, how could they leave it off!

Let's think for a second, why the heck would the iPhone have multitasking, and the ipad wouldn't. Must be an oversight. Maybe the ipad will have a different implementation? Thats my hope.

Definitely. Did you see what Jobs said about widgets?

I'm still confused as to whether the ipad will be different version of 4.0. From the liveblogs, it seemed like he was mostly talking about the iPhone, but the ipad was getting all the same features.

Honestly, it would be a little foolish of them to hold off only for adding new features. They can just as well release the OS for ipad at the same time and do another announcement in fall just for a boost in exposure before the holiday season.

there is a simple reason for this, ITS NOT AN IPHONE.

apple treating them separately, they are the same family of OS but different devices, no reason to list the Ipad in the Iphone section

I don't think you understand how secretive Apple is on development of products. From what I understand, during the original iPhone development there were devs that were working on Applications that they _thought_ were going into OS X and had no idea they were developing something for the iPhone.

Chances are, Apple pulled a small team of people from the iPhone dev team and had them work on the iPad version. But only enough to get it done and only what they needed to make it work. After the cat is out of the bag, its time to bring the rest of the team in.

Don't forget, Apple also takes their time to produce quality products. Why rush out the iPad port of 4.0 when you can polish the crap out of it for the iPhone then take their time with the iPad version after.

I understand what you mean about their secrecy. But it would be surprising that they would let their development cycle for iphone 4 on ipad to be delayed for 2 months just to get a little extra secrecy. They aren't just adding a few apps. They are changing features that affect how the operating system works. The iPad "team" would had to have some say in it's development from day 1 (otherwise it would be a much longer than just 2 months)

I think it's to do with the naming convention for this OS. I reckon when the update comes round for the iPad (with some extras like widgets), it will lose the "iPhone" part of the OS name.

It wouldnt surprise me if they had an event to introduce 4.0 to the iPad. Meaning it will probably have some different features over what the iphone is going to get. That is why he didnt really mention much about the iPad today. At least we know were getting some nice things in 4.0.
I also dont think its that ridiculous to wait 5 months considering they just released the iPad 5 days ago. Lets enjoy it as it is for right now.
