I was surprised by the announcement also. However, like Gruber pointed out, I hope Apple plans on getting caught up on iPad development by this fall. Surely, once 4.2 is released they’ll maintain parity across platforms.

And what about Mac OS X? When is QTKit/QuickTime X going to be fully baked (specifically to allow iTunes to use it instead of 7.x on both Mac and Windows)? When is LaLa-like cloud storage coming? Cocoa iTunes? iLife ’10? iWork ’10? MobileMe upgrade (to at least support Notes within 4.0)?

They have a lot going on this year. WWDC and the September iTunes Event should be interesting. I hope they’re growing their engineering resources accordingly.

That makes sense, for now, bug fixes and minor enhancements. Once 4.0 has gone live on the phones and pods then they'll set to work porting it to the iPad, which will be as glitch free as its likely to get at that point.

iPad 4.0 is not until the Fall. By that time, about 6 months later, there will probably be new iPad hardware that will be able to run it more efficiently. The current iPad, with its energy stingy ways, likely can't hand iPhone 4.0. Otherwise, why not just port it to the iPad right now? Really, iPad v2.0 will likely be out by Fall.

Put down the crack pipe and step away from the keyboard. This makes no sense at all. Sorry.

Will iPads be able to install/run apps that use the 4.0 features?

It'll be strange that iPhone/iPad "universal" apps might be able to utilize more features on the iPhone, for a short time.

Actually, I think it has more to do with amount of RAM than speed/CPU power. I'd bet that if you could somehow add more RAM to the 3G, it'd multitask just fine without any other improved hardware.

Whether or not a 4.0 app will either be incompatible or just lack features is likely up to the developer. Also I recall in the past a lot of developers gave us updates for OS compatibility, then more updates down the road for new OS features. The second round of updates may be closer or just timed for the iPad version.

Or developers could just maintain two sets of apps like we're already seeing.

Ether way, I'm sure the two devices will get their roadmaps in sync after the fall. The iPad "team" has been working hard on getting the device w/ 3.2 out the door and now need to catch up on OS 4 development.

And multitasking is totally CPU dependent. Apple has made a commitment to devices for two years, so that's the rolling legacy support. I don't think it's a coincidence that MT is coming out 2 years after the slower 3G was released.

First, I'm not whining about anything. These are just my opinions. I'm actually quite happy about this and can't wait to get my 3G iPad in the next couple of weeks. **fingers crossed**

Personally, I feel that Apple should have released the iPad when OS4 was ready. Then released the iPhone/Touch OS4 version a month or two later.

Also, I have read that there are two new OS trains that developers have seen mentioned -- 4.0.1 and 4.1 (I believe). To me, this is the iPhone and iPad versions. Right now, the iPad is running a different version (3.2) than the iPhone (3.1.3), so it only makes sense that they are being developed separately.

Also, a couple of the things that Steve mentioned in the keynote for the iPhone are already on the iPad, so the first thing is to catch up with the iPad. This probably could have been released in a 3.2 version for the iPhone, IMO, but they wanted to roll it into the 4.x version on the iPhone.

I'm starting to ramble so I'll leave it at that.

If that meant new iPhone, iPhone OS 4.0, and iPad in October would you still feel that way?

Apple obviously had to do some, perhaps considerable, work on the iPhone OS for the iPad. They probably started last fall, maybe even summer. I would imagine there are many moving parts that would result in significant delays if Apple were to bring iPhone OS 4 and iPad to market at the same time.

This is kind of crappy!

Apple knows of issues that need improving right now with the iPad... They do Nothing.

If you take a look at the HP Slate (better name and with cameras) you get some decent features with a good price.

If Apple wants to be the King of the mobile world, then make what it has the best it can no matter when. If they have to put out another update, so what! It's better then pissing a lot of people off with just being stagnent...

Really trying to restrain myself for calling you something that'll get me banned on MR. You can't even buy the HP Slate yet, it might be in shops somewhere around June.

I am really thinking about giving the new MBP a finger and just using my iPad 3G, and if I need something more then I'll cross that bridge but all the waiting, hush hush and the non personalization is not good.

Personalization? "There's an app for that"... Blow it out your arse Steve and bring us something that will blow the roof off! Quit being a control freak!

Apple thanks you for your custom in the past, should you wish to present the bird, they will not give a fig and encourage you to stick your HP slate where you suggest Steve should be blowing.

Thanyou, come again. :D

We've seen rumors floating around for iPxxx device printing and network filesharing for a while now.

Whilst it could be argued these were low priority for a phone or media player, i expect we'll see significant improvements for the iPad. It's current file 'sync' method is so braindead it has to be an intermediate solution.

I suspect we'll get whats been offered in the preview and then in the 'Fall' there'll be a 4.1 release for iPad that offers these additional improvements. My hope is that either 4.1 or 4.2 will be a parity release and all iPxxx devices will have printing and file share access.

Makes sense that the initial iPad OS upgrade would have to include these features. Shame they weren't ready for the iPad launch.

iPad 4.0

The upgrade is coming out this Fall. The feature I'm most looking forward to is multitasking so I can play music from Pandora while working in other apps. I'm wondering how much storage space the upgrade will take and if it will take up what little memory we have to run apps with multitasking. I am really enjoying my iPad and I'm all for upgrading the software, but I don't want the upgrade if performance is affected.

:apple:

outside of using Pandora in the background, I do not foresee me even needing multitasking. I too hope that this doesn't effect performance since we don't physically have the ability to use the task manager to shut apps down that we don't need running in the background.

1) Apple engineers are not idiots.
2) The iPad just came out.

So rest assured multitasking will be implemented in the best way possible without taxing performance. There was a reason Apple put a big battery in that thing.

I doubt Apple would allow the performance of the iPad to be sacrificed. However, I am more interested to see if the UI for Multitasking changes for the iPad. On an iPhone, a flickable line of simple icons within thumb-reach makes sense. Whereas on the iPad it actually seems inconvenient since my hands are usually halfway up the side of the device. I assume Apple will implement a variation of the multitasking UI for the iPad, perhaps something more like Expose or the cards-view in Safari.

Do you guys think that YouTube will be able to load videos in the background so you can do other things and not stare at the screen while it buffers?

For me YouTube takes less than five seconds to buffer on the right connection for the quality. On 4.0 it's quicker than ever.

I just hope that starting in OS4 to not support Flash compiled apps (Zinio to name a few) wont make them rejected apps from the store !!

Coming from a Windows background, those are concerns I have when an upgraded OS comes out, so it's nice to know Apple's engineers are concerned about that for me (and every other Apple user)

The apps NEVER close?!?

Its sad but I'm really looking forward to folders more than multitasking.

I will find downloading files in the background useful, if the developers of the apps that I use implement it, but I'm *really* looking forward to folders. That will make things easier for me every single day instead of just once in a while.

Oh, and the new mail features.

i personally think that they will add new features to the os for ipad i don't think there just waiting till the fall to implement 4.0 because it helps bisness and the fact that it just came out

Maybe Widgets will find their way into the OS, with Steve having sidestep that question .... ;)

Interesting that you mention widgets as I love em and I think they make a mac well, a Mac. Someone ported the dashboard to an app last week and submitted it for an approval for iPad. The app was rejected by Apple, but is now an open source available product awaiting the public jailbreak release for install. Word is it runs really well on iPad. On that note, folders in iphone os 4 has been around as categories as open source for quite awhile now, jail break required. I like it, but I must say it is somewhat tricky to remember which folder has your apps in it even with a good folder name.

That is not quite true. Re-watch the video again, as Apple provided a way to close any of the apps that were open. You invoke the multitasking apps by double-clicking the home button, but I can't remember how they closed them, just that closing any running apps was already implemented.

Don't forget, Apple stated 10 hours on video and the reviewers got 12 xD. So in theory...

Anyway, you can use multi-tasking dock to close applications. But really, they should close when they are done with whatever they're doing in the background such as uploading photos, or Pandora closing when no audio is being played, etc.
