I'm still confused as to whether the ipad will be different version of 4.0. From the liveblogs, it seemed like he was mostly talking about the iPhone, but the ipad was getting all the same features.

The iPad will get the same features, but like the current iPhone OS on the iPad, will probably have extra stuff added to it.

I'm pretty sure that the IPad update is closer to the new Ipad than the Ipad that was just released. Thankfully, I'm waiting for Rev B.

It wouldnt surprise me if they had an event to introduce 4.0 to the iPad. Meaning it will probably have some different features over what the iphone is going to get. That is why he didnt really mention much about the iPad today. At least we know were getting some nice things in 4.0.
I also dont think its that ridiculous to wait 5 months considering they just released the iPad 5 days ago. Lets enjoy it as it is for right now.

Yeah I don't recall the wordig, but didn't he say that the "features" were going to come to the iPad in the fall. I suspect we'll see a v4.1 v.4.2 with some other bonuses.

there is a simple reason for this, ITS NOT AN IPHONE.

apple treating them separately, they are the same family of OS but different devices, no reason to list the Ipad in the Iphone section

Well... they mention the iPad in the same paragraph, so even though you may be right, it's just a bit disconcerting that they don't list it among the multitasking capable devices since they are obviously not just talking about the iPhone, but all devices that run the OS. E.G. they mention the iPod Touch, which is also obviously not an iPhone.

I understand what you mean about their secrecy. But it would be surprising that they would let their development cycle for iphone 4 on ipad to be delayed for 2 months just to get a little extra secrecy. They aren't just adding a few apps. They are changing features that affect how the operating system works. The iPad "team" would had to have some say in it's development from day 1 (otherwise it would be a much longer than just 2 months)

You are talking about a company, where after the iPad was out of the bag, forced developers that were "privileged" to get their hands on a dev unit, to chain the device to a table, make sure it was covered in cloth, AND keep in a room with no windows.

And you wonder if they'll delay a release for two months. Also, the iPad just got released and needs its own time to cook and see what issues/bugs people come up with.

I would really like to see user logins / profiles on the iPad. This is less of a 'personal' device than a phone and more likely to be shared. Email is a great example, nobody wants to share the same Mail installation.

This is really hilarious. As soon as I saw them say that it wasn't going to be released until the Fall for the iPad, I knew people were going to start whining. Apple just can't win with some people. First they squeal about lack of multitasking and then when they come out with it they squeal about when they are going to get it.

If you really want something to squeal about, check out the iPhone 4.0 page on Apple's site:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/preview-iphone-os/

Check out the bottom where it talks about multitasking compatibility. Notice any device missing from the list? ;) I'm sure it's just an oversight, but one more thing to worry about.

Uh yeah. the link is in the iPhone section and deal with the realse this summer of the Iphone OS for the iPhone and the iPod touch. None of the presentation had any photo's features, etc that were specific to the ipad. That's why. I'm sure there will be another roadshow to hype up what will be in store for the iPad late summer after this is released.

You are definitely right. The iPad needs this feature and perhaps this would be a great addition to the now empty lock screen. I honestly don't see the point off the lock screen. It kinda annoys me when I use my iPad. It's definitely needed on a phone, but not on the ipad.

Quit being so friggin whiney! The device is less than a week old, we knew what it could do when we got it, act like big boys (and girls) and accept what we have!

I cant stand how when events like this happen, that someone thinks they are getting the shaft somehow. No wonder many people think Apple owners are a bunch of prima-donna!

Pull up your pants, wipe your nose, and behave, or ill put all of you in time out!

Andy

The iPad uses an entirely different processor than the iPhone and iPod Touch -- it makes sense that it would take longer to port iPhone OS 4.0 over to it. Apple could either release the new OS this spring for the tens of millions of iPhone users, or make everybody wait until the fall when it will be ready for the iPad. Since at best there will be a few million iPad users by then, it totally makes sense to get it out for the iPhone and make iPad users wait.

Actually its posts like yours that make people think Apple owners are a bunch of prima-donnas.

Oh yes Uncle Steve Whatever you say.....you know best...

Well except from a PR standpoint.

Please they been working on the OS for months now port over my nose . Dam it there hideing something again !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want it in the summer !

The iPad OS is not the same as the iPhone OS. I'm glad they're shipping it in fall because that means some major refinements are in the works. Remember this from the Q&A?

Q: Why have you veered away from widgets on the iPad?
A: We just shipped it on Saturday. And then we rested on Sunday.

Q: So widgets are possible?
A: Everything is possible.

Everything is possible. Let Apple do their work.

I don't know if it has been said before or not, but I think Apple is pretty much fully focused on developing the new iphone currently, thats why there is a delay in the OS4 release for the iPad. Also it gives them more time to experiment and actually think about some useful features exclusively for the iPad.

First off this wasn't the whole conversation. In context it seemed more he was dodging the question and joking around with the guy asking the question (Who is one of engadget writers). I'm surprised people are getting so much from this when the writer who asked this question himself basically takes it as Steve is ignoring the question.

And the OS's are the same unless you missed the whole point that the event was to show the new 4.0 OS. They didn't say at the end and for the new ipad os.. they said 4.0 is coming to iPad in Fall.

Dang just in time for the 2nd generation Ipad that will be mostly coming out then right??

Obviously they are making OS 4.0 better for the iPad thus it will take longer. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't hold another media event later this summer outlining what will be in iPad 4.0.

The excuses from Apple sycophant are quite hilarious really. I honestly haven't read one that explains why the OS couldn't be rolled out for the iPad at around the same time.
