From MY experience, major updates slow the iPhone and iPod touch down. The Original iPhone and touch were fine on 1.x and a tad slower on 2.x an unbearabley slow on 3.x. The iPhone 3G and 2n generation touch were fine on 2.x, and slightly slower on 3.x and maybe will get even slower on 4.x. So with this pattern, the 3GS and touch 3rd gen will be slower on 4.x. Perhaps so will the iPad. And they don't want that to happen right away, so they delay the update for it. A just release device getting slower in less than 6 months after release is sad, so apple will delay it. That's a guess.

A more releastic guess, and the one I'm more sure about is this.

They released iPad an 3.2. Now it's time to focus on iPhone. So they are working on 4.x for iPhone and iPod touch. And are slowly workin on 4.x fr iPad. Also they are probably hard at work on the 4th generation iPhone. And te iPad has a larger screen, so they will have to take advanage of it. That will take time to get it to look well planned.

Just my guess.

PS: this way typed on an iPhone 3GS... Please excuse me from spelling mistakes.

iPhone OS 4.0 = Summer
iPad OS 4.0 = Fall

Last I checked, Fall came right after Summer so it's only a few more months to wait.

Jesus, what a bunch of freakin' whiners! I don't know how your loved ones put up with all your negativity and whining!

Mark

Last I checked, Spring just started just over two weeks ago. New update only five months out!

The excuses from Apple sycophant are quite hilarious really. I honestly haven't read one that explains why the OS couldn't be rolled out for the iPad at around the same time.

I'm sure Apple has some nefarious reason behind it, right? Because it definitely wouldn't benefit them in any way to update the iPad with the latest and greatest software as soon as they possibly can.

This is kind of crappy!

Apple knows of issues that need improving right now with the iPad... They do Nothing.

If you take a look at the HP Slate (better name and with cameras) you get some decent features with a good price.

If Apple wants to be the King of the mobile world, then make what it has the best it can no matter when. If they have to put out another update, so what! It's better then pissing a lot of people off with just being stagnent...

I am really thinking about giving the new MBP a finger and just using my iPad 3G, and if I need something more then I'll cross that bridge but all the waiting, hush hush and the non personalization is not good.

Personalization? "There's an app for that"... Blow it out your arse Steve and bring us something that will blow the roof off! Quit being a control freak!

I have an original iPhone and iPod touch, and both are just as fast on 3.1.3 as they were on 1.x. The one thing I did that the vast majority of people did not as that, for each major release, I restored and set it up as a new device. Wiping it clean. The same way I do for my computer OSes. If you carry over the crap thats built up over the years then you will see your device performance slow down, iPhone OS or Mac OS or Windows.

That said, it is stupid that iPad owners have to wait until Fall for the new update.

But iPad owners need to look at the situation realistically. iPhone OS 4.0 for iPhones and iPod touch only brings three real features that iPad doesn't already have. Folders for apps, the centralized online game service, and half-assed multi-tasking. We already have everything else so far as I can tell. Oh, we don't have iAds. But yeah, thats something I do NOT want anyway.

FWIW, I restored my iPhone completely and started fresh, yet 3.0 on an first generation iPhone has been nothing short of painfully slow.

Surely the fact that the iPad is uniquely running iPhone OS 3.2, and the fact that the release of it's OS 4 upgrade is later, suggests that iPad owners may well get OS 4.1 instead, with extra iPad specific features?

It may be worth waiting for so keep your hair on!! ;)

I'm pretty sure that there were a lot of specifics that the iPhone OS 4.0 team didn't know about the iPad before the launch. Perhaps there is extra time needed to accommodate the iPad hardware?

Are we getting a bit mixed up here.

Sure we will be getting the same version OS as the iPhone but they are not going to be the same file and same download surely??

i.e. wont it be like the current firmwares for 3G and 3GS i.e. different features for the diff devices but same OS system (i.e. 3GS has voice control and compass apps)

I believe this to be the case and we will have diff features for the iPad not mentioned today i.e. Printing and better file management hence why the delay

iPad 4.0 is not until the Fall. By that time, about 6 months later, there will probably be new iPad hardware that will be able to run it more efficiently. The current iPad, with its energy stingy ways, likely can't hand iPhone 4.0. Otherwise, why not just port it to the iPad right now? Really, iPad v2.0 will likely be out by Fall.

Yeah...no. The 3GS can handle OS4, and the iPad is twice as fast as that. Apple does weird things sometimes, but not supporting OS4 on the current iPad would be insane.

I'm just curious as to ANY reasoning why this is logical. What has Apple ever done in the past to suggest this?

Does this mean that we will only see 3.2.x updates until 4.0 is released? I was hoping a 3.x update here or there for added functionality, but I guess the dev team will be too busy prepping a 4.0 iPad release.

I am more pissed that my 3G won't do multitasking. **** you Steve-o. I'll be swapping to BB or Droid.

The 3G is too slow to handle multitasking. Even without OS 4.0 it's too slow. I've owned all three iPhone models and the 3GS is faster in everything it does. The difference is significant.

If Apple was really trying to screw you, they wouldn't give you ANY of the 4.0 features.

Enjoy your BB or droid!

Mark

Will iPads be able to install/run apps that use the 4.0 features?

It'll be strange that iPhone/iPad "universal" apps might be able to utilize more features on the iPhone, for a short time.

Actually, I think it has more to do with amount of RAM than speed/CPU power. I'd bet that if you could somehow add more RAM to the 3G, it'd multitask just fine without any other improved hardware.

Well the 2.x branch never went beyond 2.2.something. I'm sure there will be bug fixes but that's probably it. On the bright side, we'll get extra stuff in 4.0 more than likely.

No, so apps for 4.0 won't run, not on iPhone original nor ipad

To be precise, certain 4.0 features within apps won't run on older hardware (or OS's). The apps themselves can still run, similar to the way it worked when 3.0 came out and many people still used 2.whatever.

So if you want to run the brand new multitasking-enabled Pandora app that comes out after 4.0 is available, you will be able to, but just not in the background.

This of course assumes the developers code it to be compatible in this way, which is what Apple suggests and most developers do.

All I know is that the iPad will get the OS in the fall and that it will be free not like the iPod touch

My guess....they are holding off until sometime around the WWDC to announce a batch of iPad only upgrades to OS 4.0. So basically once OS 4.0 has been tested and is ready to go they can release a new SDK with iPad specific updates which will give developers 3 months or so to work through the bugs of the current upgrade, and then another 3 months or so to get through the next batch.

To me that makes sense since you can get OS 4.0 out in time for the new iPhone hardware and only worry about testing the features which affect it and then start going nuts with the iPad stuff.

This whole notion of them holding back iphone OS a few months to add features for the iPad blows my mind.

If they felt it had enough features to hold a whole press conference for then there are enough features to warrant it being released at the same time as the iphone. It's not like they can not make another release in the fall.

Hope they release a developers version soon. Some of my iPhone using friends got their UUIDs added to developers accounts and have 4.0 installed now. Can't wait to do the same with my iPad!

While I agree that the most logical reason is that its due to the fact that the iphone OS developers were kept in the dark there could be more of a strategic reason for Apple.

Other possible tablet mfg's were waiting to see what Apple came out with. Once that was shown to the world, they had a basic blueprint to start the mfg process to come up with some alternative. They now can get their hands on the device and these same companies can get their hands on the iPhone 4.0 dev kit claiming to be a developer. Then they can try and mimic features, etc with ease by knowing all the inner workings. What Apple wants to do it keep competitors off their game by having to have them hit a moving target up until Fall and then Holiday buying season. Anyone that looks at the iphone OS 4 and work off of that will find themselves behind again due to iPad specific features that have yet to be included in the Dev Kit specific to the ipad.

I would be curious to know if the iphone Os could even be installed on the ipad for a developer or if there is really iPad simulator functionality regarding IPad that works with this Dev Kit.
