Wow... My mom wont let me bootcamp.

Okay, the other day, i felt like playing guild wars, and it is pc only... So i say to my mom, Mom can i borrow the windows xp disc? She locks all the discs up in this blue chest of hers.

She says: Why do you need it?
I say: I want to bootcamp Windows Xp on my MBP, so i can play guild wars.
She says: No, your not doing another thing that will ruin that computer...
I really never have done anything to ruin this.

She has never had a mac, and her computer is a like 7 year old HP, and it is always breaking down, so she thinks everything breaks a computer...

I dont know what Mum's problem with it is.
We are an all-Mac household (3 if you are wondering) and she gets me to do everything else even remotely difficult on the computers....

Partitioning the hard drive is a major change and there is always a possibility that something can go wrong. She simply doesn't want to take that chance, especially over a game. The fact is that it's not your computer, and when you have your own computer that you bought you can do whatever you want to it.

You aren't going to ruin your computer unless you're a complete idiot. Ask her what she knows about computers compared to you, and that should shut her up. Anyways, this is a pointless thread.

If you install Bootcamp wrong, just re-format over it or just de-partition your hard drive and try it again. But, back up all your files because if you mess this thing up really bad, you can wipe your Hard drive clean.

Print out instructions on how to instal bootcamp FROM APPLE. Sit down with her, and install it infront of her.

If nothing happens, she will trust you, or buy a mac.

Sounds like a tough situation. But you gotta love your mom, lol. She's trying to look out for you, although hiding the disc might not be the best course of action.

Actually, shoot me a private message. I'll help you to get an XP or Vista disc just for the hell of it, and I'm sure it will be completely to your satisfaction.

Ok, here is my 2¢ worth...

1. Don't be disrespectful to your mom... i.e. "Ask her what she knows about computers compared to you, and that should shut her up."

2. Don't be disobedient or deceitful to your mom... i.e. "Drop her like she's hot and install your own tanj system on your own tanj computer. Hide the disk partition with a trial of OnyX."

3. Don't install a copy of XP that isn't legitimate... i.e. if you already have a copy that is installed on another computer

4. If you really want to do this... have a reasonable, rationale conversation with your mom. Ask her about her misgivings and give her logical, well thought out answers to her concerns. Do your homework on this so you have good solid answers on partitioning, bootcamp, etc. Show your maturity by dealing with this like an adult instead of showing your immaturity by being deceitful and disrespectful.

5. If, after making your case, she still says no... then respect her decision and realize a game is not worth ruining your relationship with your mom

I am willing to bet your mom has NO idea what you are talking about.

Perhaps you could print out or pull up a couple of web pages or some of the forum talk regarding the subject.

Pick the right time to discuss this. If you hit her with it as soon as she walks in the door, dealing wth an issue, or in the middle of something she is going to do what most parents would do, just say no and give a lame excuse.

Plan some time to discuss it and be flexible if the day or time has to be changed.

Is there any other reason why you want to boot camp? If there is include them in your discussion.

If you ahve to buy windows can you trade in any older games to reduce the cost impact?

I think the OP needs to find something better to do with their time. What we all must remember is the only reason s/he wants to partition the HD is for some game. I think that it's not worth it if it is just going to be for a game, unless there are other reasons .

Why don't you borrow your friends copy of XP or find one somewhere & use your key. Legit & you can get what you want......

but if you screw up the mac don't tell your mom the people on MacRumors told you to do it...............

This is what I am thinking too. You need to get a legitimate copy of Windows. I'm pretty sure that the copy that your mom has is the one that came with her HP and won't work in Boot Camp anyway...
