This works for me on iOS 11 Public Beta 2, 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9

If I have Split View active and try to open an app in Slide Over, both Split View apps get grayed out. But using the method above (full screen app, then Slide Over, then add Split View from the dock) all three apps remain active.

Ha! And it’s not even “just failed to dim” bug. I just tried it and scrolled Files, Messages and Safari at the same time on a 9.7” Pro

GUYS, here’s a bug to allow all 3 apps functioning at the same time on the original iPad Pro 12.9”:

1) Have one full screen app opened

2) Choose an app to hover over the main app via Slide Over

3) Summon the dock and pull an app to one of the edges to snap the app, it’ll look like the Slide Over app will disappear but worry not

4) There you have it, all 3 apps working simultaneously and just the Slide Over app.

Fact #1: When doing step 3, if you snap the app to the left side, you won’t be able to switch the split view apps around

Fact #2: If you snap the app to the right, moving that window or adjust the size of the app to 50/50 will cause the entire screen to dim black, and you’ll be back to being only to use the Slide Over app.

Well... it looks like all 3 apps can run simultaneously on the original iPad Pro 12.9”, fingers crossed that this is just a bug because my iPad works fine with it

Nice find.

Works well on pro 9.7. Had a PDF and Numbers open side by side and I had the window version of Mail app that I would swipe into view to check my mail.

It has now been proven beyond reasonable doubt that Apple unnecessarily and intentionally limits the features and performance of its older devices with the sole purpose of forcing people to upgrade to their newer hardware.

And their methodology of forcing users is by not allowing them to move back to older software once the upgrade is done. Security updates are unfortunately and catagorically only an excuse given by Apple.

What say guys?

Beyond reasonable doubt? Have you read the post before yours? Or other posts in this thread saying it is possible? Plus things change all the time during beta...

Yes.

That is contingent on the fact that the iPad Pro 9.7 person can only access all that using the trick mentioned on this thread. And not in any other way. Can he please confirm that for us?

1) the 9.7 has half the RAM of even the 1st gen of the 12.9 and now the 10.5 and 2nd gen 12.9
2) all iPads currently require the “trick” to do this

What I’m saying here is that you don’t know what you’re talking about. Maybe you could try reading the very short thread you’re about to post in before adding your “beyond reasonable doubt” thoughts in future.

If all 4 iPad Pros display similar behaviour without the trick, then:

Oops. My bad.

They may well ultimately limit the 1st gen 9.7 from having 2 apps in split with a slideover, given it has half the RAM of the other three. They might in the end disallow it in the devices with 4Gb. Do everyone a favor by sparing us your “proven” theories when they make that decision.

I cant speak for the 2nd gen 12.9 Pro but my 10.5 doesn't require any special tricks to get 2 split view+1 slide over working together.

Does it work on the iPad Pro 10.5 (its really starting to get hard to name iPads btw) ?

Yep, it does work on the 10.5 because it’s matches the 2nd gen 12.9” iPad Pro in all but screen size. (Movie didn’t show in the screenshot, but it does show up when actually using the iOS 11 beta.)

Also here. Safari, Notes, and Email all active on my 9.7. Though it did lock up the first time I tried it, forcing me to reboot.
Hope they keep the feature/bug.

Edit: even works with PiP.

I didn't use any tricks. Simply have two apps open then slide the third one up. You can then slide the third app over to the right to hide it or swipe left from the right edge to bring it back temporarily.

Keyboard not active in split view apps:

Whilst I can get multiple apps multitasking with the workaround on iPad Pro 9.7”, I notice you can’t type as the keyboard only works on the slide over app. You must dismiss the slide over before you can type in the split view apps.

I still think the bug is that this actually works at all. Im sure Apple does not intend this to work, atleast not on the smaller iPads. However I hope I’m wrong!

This is only developer beta 3 and public beta 2, lets hold such comments for a while and see what happens.

I was thinking of buying a 1st gen 12.9" refurb. Hopefully by the end of summer we will have a better idea. It's going to suck if I have to shell out for the new 12.9" for extra features I don't really need just to get all the iOS 11 features.

Do people really use their iPad's with 4 apps open?

Is good to have the option.. for example, you could be doing split view work and have messeges open to reply to texts as they come in.. I often work with youtube playing news in the background, if only they supported pip, I would have it opened side aside.

Yep, I think something like this is a likely use case. A couple of apps open in split, dragging and dropping between the two. A 3rd in slideover, perhaps a utility like a messaging app or maybe something like Notes or a mindmapping app, which you'd like to also drag and drop from into the split apps. Meanwhile you're listening to, but not watching, a PiP stream, pushed off screen.
