Thanks for the reply, edddeduck.

Maybe in one way it's good that it's not on Steam. I've been looking around and some people are concerned that if Steam ever went out of business, then they wouldn't be able to play their games anymore.

I also see that if you buy the game from Feral, it needs to be activated (is it possible to activate it on more than one Mac?). What if at some point in the future (god forbid) Feral goes out of business, and for some reason I need to reinstall the game, then I wouldn't be able to activate it.

It seems like buying the game from the Mac App Store may be the best option, because there's no activations and you are even allowed to copy the game to other Mac computers that you own.

Actually Mac App Store has Apple activation code built into all applications (even the free ones) so it also has potentially the same issue as the other stores.

The answer if you are truly worried about games ceasing to work you should buy the DVD version, in the case of Feral games the DVD will not require online activation if you place the DVD in the drive. We deliberately offered this option for users worried about things like this or users without any internet on their Mac even for installation.

I thought Steam said that if they ever went under they would give out the codes for the games ?

Unlikely as contractually that would be hard if not impossible to actually do. They could for games they own the IP for (depending on the circumstances of them going bankrupt) but other companies games I don't think they legally could.

That is what I thought and the very reason I stopped using their services.

Everything goes into shades of grey when lawyers are involved :) Bottom line if you can't play the game with no internet required at any time then you are at risk of something stopping you from playing in the future.

This is why all Feral DVD versions of games have a no internet required ever mode to put people with any concerns over this at ease.

It's unlikely that anything will happen but if you own a DVD (for Feral games) you are covered no matter what happens to the publisher/store you bought from.

Hmm, this is very strange because since the update to v1.0.1 I have no play from DVD option, activate online or no play.

Are you talking about XCOM? I was thinking of getting the DVD version. edddeduck, do you know what is going on with Washac's issue?

I would not be too concerned slapple, the 1.0.1 DVD version works fine and has all the same options as 1.0 version. I have the DVD copy installed on my Mac myself so I can confirm I checked before answering this to be sure and all the options still work fine.

You can read the thread for more details but Washac had an issue installing the update and although we offered support and advice that he should reinstall we never heard back, I assume the issue he mentioned is related to this although a simple reinstall should solve his issue as we have not had more than a handful of issues with out update mechanism in total and we have been using it for over 5 years now!

According to the support stats we have had thousands of users update the DVD/Download version of XCOM 1.0.1 from our website and apart from a few users reporting problems (all resolved) caused by traffic on one of our servers, we have had no reported issues with the update not installing correctly.

Here are the instructions from the DVD to give you some details on the options.

===== Activation Choices ====
Enter your Product Key into the six empty boxes in the Activation tab. Your Product Key is printed on the back of the manual. Once the Product Key has been entered, the Save button in the right-hand corner of the tab will activate.

Click the Save button to save your Product Key.

You now have a choice to activate the game online or to play with the disc in the drive.

Playing using the disc – Click the Play with DVD button. In order for the game to launch, one of the XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Elite Edition discs must be present in your Mac's DVD drive.
Playing using Online Activation – If you prefer to play without a game disc in the drive, then you may do so by activating your game online:
Click the Activate Online… button in the Activation tab. A dialog box will appear confirming that your Product Key will be sent to Feral.
Click the Activate Online button in the new dialog box that appears. The Activation tab will update showing you the number of machines you are allowed to activate the game on and how many machines you have currently activated. You can now play your game without a disc in the drive or an internet connection.

Sorry but I never ever received anything regarding reinstalling the game after my last contact with your company, only email I got was one with the Rome Total War mix up.

Thanks for the re install pointer, I have just tried this suggestion and it remains the same, I have no Play from DVD Option.

By some of your replies to me I feel that you think I am being awkward on purpose but I am not, I really would like to play this game with no trouble.

Before the update I could play putting up with the odd freeze up playing from the DVD.

I have made a contact to yourselves via the the XCOM client.

Sorry but I never ever received anything regarding reinstalling the game after my last contact with your company, only email I got was one with the Rome Total War mix up.

We replied in this forum to your post about the "mixup" and explained it was caused by a lack of detail in your email so our team had to guess what game the issue might be with, as we shipped Rome that day we assumed it was the Rome patch. When we never heard back in support or on the thread we assumed you followed the advice or no longer wanted any support.

Thanks for the re install pointer, I have just tried this suggestion and it remains the same, I have no Play from DVD Option.

If you do the (one time only) online activation you no longer need the DVD in the drive. If you deactivate your online activation you can "Play with DVD" instead of "Play".

You have activated your copy online so the DVD option is not there anymore. If you deactivate your copy (using the button on the activation tab) you can use the DVD instead, however neither option should effect if the game plays or not just the method you prefer to use.

By some of your replies to me I feel that you think I am being awkward on purpose but I am not, I really would like to play this game with no trouble.

We don't have any aim but to make all our customers be able to play our games (as long as they have supported Mac hardware). In your case your Mac machine has a Windows graphics card (not officially supported by Apple) and at one stage you also had custom (none Apple) graphics drivers installed.

We can only support officially supported hardware as we cannot test every Hackintosh Mac or MacPro with all the different PC custom graphics cards as it's just not feasible or supported by Apple.

Even though you are using custom hardware we have shown that we are willing to have a look at your issue and see if we can help. I think this shows we are willing to go beyond most companies support by offering advice on unsupported hardware, but please understand as your hardware setup is not officially supported by Apple there are limits to what we can do.

Before the update I could play putting up with the odd freeze up playing from the DVD.

I have made a contact to yourselves via the the XCOM client.

Just a friendly reminder but when you contact us please make sure you don't delete XCOM from the email subject line like last time, :) you will get a faster reply if we can tell immediately what game your issue is with. Even though your hardware is unsupported we can have another quick look as we prefer making solutions for users if we can.

We will continue offering you support if you contact us but as you have unsupported hardware we cannot guarantee we can fix the issues.

Best Regards,

Edwin

Even though I had deleted the game and re installed it, it would not allow me to play from DVD. Support informed me that there is a specific way to remove the game so you get a completely new clean install.

I can play from DVD again :)

Exciting news indeed!

Well I hope and I would think this must mean more Feral goodness will be making its way to Steam. Oh, sweetness! :D

I know I don't have a "real" mac, but I got 112 games on steam, and all are working, except this one.
Reading the forums on steam suggest that you cannot install the game on a secondary library (which I have on a 2TB disk, instead of my small SSD).
http://steamcommunity.com/app/200510/discussions/0/846957366816492916/

I simply don't have the space to install the game in my internal SSD, therefore al my steam games are on one of my internal 2TB drives.

I might retire one of my old SSDs and get a new bigger one (~500GB or so, prices has gone down a lot since I bought my first one :p )

Do feral have any plans on making it possible to run the game from a secondary library?

Thanks in advance,
-cluthz

Steam does a few none standard things that can cause issues on some Mac setups when using none standard locations, as this is our first Steam game we have not learnt all the tips, tricks and side effects of the Steam system. Although your Mac is a Hackintosh (and hence unsupported) we are tracking the issue with the aim of resolving it in a future update.

As all the other Mac versions of XCOM run just fine in any folder on any volume this is definitely a Steam specific issue with how they set games up so should be easy to track down and resolve.

Edwin

Thank you, I'm looking forward to an update :)

I'm aware that my system is not supported, but then I saw other users reporting the same, and they all had one common non-standard setup, a non-default steam library location.
I realize that a minority installs steam games on a secondary HD, but when I got my SSD they were so expensive and a 90GB was all I could afford, and it's full with my OS and my work related apps.

Keep up the good work, mac gaming would not be the same without feral :)

just so you guys know. i bought the pc version of xcom back a few months before the mac release.

the mac version, i just noticed, showed right up. steam has given me both once they were allowed to.

2012 iMac Freeze Issues

I'm running the Steam version with a 2012 27" iMac, fusion drive, 680MX, I5 and I have the same freeze issues as reported by others in this forum. I've tried disabling wifi as suggested earlier, resetting config files, and contacting Feral support; all without a solution yet. It happens every 20 mins or so and required a full reboot to recover. This is the only program (game or otherwise) I've had this issue with. Have there been any other solutions or workarounds out there that have been found to work?

Thanks

I suspect it does not require a full reboot a force quit of the app should work just fine, other users with a freeze as you mention can quit out with a force quit. However I am sure our support team can tell you how.

The freeze is caused as far as we can tell so far by logic bug in the original code that causes the game to freeze during turns. It can been seen and has been reported on console and PC forums as well as the Mac. We are investigating and if/when we get a solution will will release a patch.
