WX is expensive because it is a workstation card, it has nothing to do with size.

Of course I know that. What I mean is more like I am willing to pay more if that's the best of the best single slot card.

But I also wonder why this kind of card only avail as workstation card. Why a gaming single slot card cannot have 8GB VRAM, 75W TDP, 3.9 TFLOPS....?

This card came after the RX 460, maybe there will be a consumer version. But perhaps not single-slot.

Will you consider the WX5100? It's also single slot, more powerful than the RX460, more VRAM, also no aux power required, and tested able to work as eGPU.

Oh wow, I didn't know that existed. I guess the question is, will that work with 10.12?

Also, I see the have a wx7100 that's even more powerful...

WX7100 is supposed to be the most powerful single slot card, but it consumes 130W.

Do you know if it works on a 5,1 mac pro? I could see getting 2 of these or the 5100, as long as it works. Would be fantastic.

TBH, don't know, but if it can work as eGPU, should also work (most likely work better) internally on the cMP. And 10.12 should be a must for Polaris 10. The older OS do not have driver for these cards.

I also think that dual WX7100 is quite powerful setup indeed. Especially this setup can stay within the 6pin's 75W limit. It's an expensive choice, but may be the best solution if really need single slot card.

Thanks! Ok you've given me home to order them and try them out. I will report back. Although I'm feeling very "charlie brown and lucy football" about this all. :D

Well that was disappointing. Neither the wx5100 nor the wx7100 worked in my 5,1 mac. :(

Im not sure if I had to do something special, but I just put them in and tried to boot. Of course without flashing, no grey screen, but even after trying different configs (display port to mini display port, and display port to DVI) no go. :( These are not the cards you're looking for.

All I want for xmas is a new Mac Pro and/or a single slot card (that preferably supports 6 displays). :D

The WX 5100 and 7100 are Polaris 10 and require kext editing similar to the RX 480. You'll need to add their PCI IDs to the appropriate kext files so that macOS can load them at boot.

WX 5100 has PCI ID 67c7 and WX 7100 has PCI ID 67c4.

Sorry, no way I'm doing kext editing. Too much hassle. Didn't try, so perhaps it would work doing that.

Depending on which GPU your 5,1 currently has, the RX 460 may or may not show much improvement. I ran some benchmarks to compare the performance of the RX 460 vs. Radeon Pro 460 in the Late 2016 15" MacBook Pro. You can run the same tests with your existing GPU in the 5,1 and determine whether it's worth it.

This is a flashed 4,1 so yes.

You need the nvidia webdriver and no boot screens obviously on it, it should beat a 750Ti by 40% or so at less power usage per cycle.

Unfortunately I cannot seem to find it for sale anywhere to try buying it here in the US. :(

I can ship them from EU - they are now more wide available. Retail works as my engineering sample/review one then OOTB. Shipping likely not cheap however.

The RX 460 will be plenty for me.
1. Does it work out of the box in a 4,1 Mac Pro with 5,1 firmware?
2. No kext editing or anything like that?
3. Any advantage over a GTX 750 ti?

1. yes. If 4k HDMI @60Hz is desired under Sierra, you need active DP>HDMI adaptor and SwitchResX
2. no editing required
3. haven't researched

If you want higher power - there is the single slot KFA2 Katana 1070, which works flawlessly in my test 5,1.

i tried searching for it and found info on it here:
http://www.kfa2.com/kfa2/graphics-card/kfa2-geforcer-gtx-1070-katana.html

but couldn't anywhere to buy it. This thread seems cursed with all unobtanium cards. Do you happen to have a link to actually buy it?

Has anyone tried this card?
