If the XS Max were the same size as the XR it wouldn’t be a downgrade because they’re both offering generous screen dimensions and you would still be getting an additional lens for your camera. Plus OLED, if you’re into OLED, and some people are and wouldn’t want anything else. With dark mode soon to be part of iOS there are also potential power savings to OLED.
Oh sorry, but I meant from xs max to xr with the hypothetical same size... bc you said missed the size of xs max the most

I upgraded from a 6S to an Xs. Very happy with it.

I love the colors of the XR series, but I always put my phone in a case, anyway. Bought my stepson a red XR, and it's a beautiful phone.

I bought the Xs as soon as it came out, so the XR wasn't available yet. Comparing them now on Apple's site, at 256 GB storage, the Xs is $250 MORE. The XR is clearly the better value, and if I had to buy a phone today I would buy the XR.

So guys I have tried both phones at the authorized sellers. I’ll summarize it

I am still mad about the bezels and I’m worried about XR being bigger it will have easier time slipping off my hand when I’m busy carrying stuff... it’s bigger than my current phone. And I’m really worried the bigger screen makes it easy for people to snoop over my shoulder. I still like the more premium look of XS but I guess at least XR doesn’t look as cheap as 5c...

Also thanks for those who’ve replied. Looks like XR is fine but now, my question does 64 gig storage fill up fast? I play 1-2 games, I don’t put movies in my phone and I mostly stream songs, I do take screenshots a ton after setting up assitive button as a screenshot button, it’s faster than saving images. If 64gb fills up fast I’ll take the XR.

I do want a better camera just simply because I think it’s better, but yeah I think I just don’t care about the pic quality... but remind you my current $150 phone doesn’t really have the best camera, so anything above it is really an upgrade.

Say if the XS max were the same size as XR, would you think its a downgrade or would it be the same more or less?

If the max were the same size as the XR, it would probably be considered by some to be a downgrade based on the display, although, for me, OLED isn’t really an option, so it’s a moot point. IDK what I’m gonna do when OLED becomes the only option.

There are camera differences as well, but, personally, I think they’re kind of a wash. I do slightly miss being able to do the portrait mode on objects other than people, but it’s not a deal breaker. I love the battery life, and I have great connectivity; considerably better than my dd’s XS.
[doublepost=1560195132][/doublepost]To answer your question about storage, I have a 64 gb, and I still have 42 gbs available. I DO utilize the cloud, but a lot of my stuff is actually stored on my phone right now. I know I likely don’t have nearly the apps on my phone that some do, nor the music. I have around 1400 photos and 130 videos on it right now.

Oh I see what you mean. Well they’re close enough in display size I feel it’s not too much of a loss, really. I’d have a bit of trouble adjusting down to an XS.

If I had to choose among the 2018 iPhones, pretending I don’t get sick from OLED, I would stick with Xr because the value for the money is there. And the connectivity is better, from what I have seen.

I thought my Max was relatively luxurious but I never felt comfortable with that price tag. It was a discomfort I was happy to shake off when my health issues forced the Xr choice onto me. The top of the line iPhone does carry a very painful price tag and unlike Samsung, Apple doesn’t pitch deals that make it lucrative to pick the top of the line model. Maybe the carriers do, but at the time I got my phone there wasn’t much in the way of deals.

At this stage of life, I can afford to own whatever phones I want, but I still try to get good deals and solid value when I pick them out.

Oh with the Xr for $50 more than the 64GB base model you can get a 128 GB phone which, with your usage pattern should give you plenty of room and help the phone last you a few years if you decide you want to hold onto it.

64GB isn’t a bad size for you, but it gives very little “wiggle room” for some unpredictable day when you may need to load up your phone for some reason. But only you can decide if the extra $50 bothers you. 128GB is what a lot of my friends and family consider a good size. Not too expensive and not too small. Just right.

Thanks guys, while i definitely agree XR logically packs more value for the price, i caved in and bought an XS because i thought there must be something good in it.

But now I wholeheartedly agree with you guys. i bought an XS yesterday but I feel ripped off tbh. True tone, which I always turn on on the ipad is very yellow on the XS. Camera is good and i think it’s supposed to be the best but the difference is super negligible and I don’t care about photography enough, I just want to take pics. 3d touch, like i suspected is a gimmick, long press is more natural. Idk, I’ve always felt excited when getting techie products but I’m having a bad buyer’s remorse. i don’t think The advantages of XS justify the the price tag difference between this and te XR. XS max is far bigger than XR so I can see the appeal at this point I don’t get why apple bothered with theXS, or why apple made XR bigger than the XS.

So I’m gonna returning this XS and get an XR instead. Besides in my country, more sellers sell XR and XS max cases but not so much for XS. it’s funny how this went exactly as i imagined. and yes I’m going with 64gb. thanks all.

Having had a XS Max and now a XR, I honestly feel that the XS Max is in no way worth the extra money over the XR. The XR is much better value for money, in my opinion.

Actually, I do agree with you being a Max owner. And I say that because the phones are highly similar in terms of what they offer with True Tone/wireless charging/stereo speakers/face ID, ect, etc. The real difference with the XS is the aesthetic’s with the stainless, [3D Touch, OLED and the telephoto lens]. The telephoto lens is not a major contributor for me for the XS, 3D Touch I do use quite regularly, but the XR is becoming closer to trying to replicate that with the simulated version. Altogether, for $250 savings with the XR and the best battery life Apple has offered any iPhone, I do agree the XR is the better value. (And I also don’t care about the OLED display versus LCD, as they both are very vibrant displays.)

Hi OP just wondering how long are you intending to keep your new iPhone XR.

If you are planning to keep it for a couple of years or if you have plans to pass it on to family or friends. Might be a good idea to get the 128gb version.

It’s really the sweet spot at the moment for most people, and the increment in price to value is well worth it.

Absolutely agree, the XR is a fantastic phone, my son has it. Personally, I've never had any complaints about Apples LCD screen quality. I don't use 3D Touch often, and the stainless as opposed to the aluminum isn't much of a concern to me either. My one and only factor in buying my MAX was the telephoto lens which definitely is NOT worth the extra money. But, I'm not much of a fan of those "add-on" type lenses so I went MAX. I'm waiting to see what this years XR version has in store with the camera, if the rumors are true and it does have a telephoto lens, I'll probably bite.

Maybe 5, but I don't like keeping too many files since I usually don't look back at those so I do backups once in a while and wiped my devices out.. I did think about the value of the 128gb but my 8 yo MacBook pro never gets full so I am confident with 64gb.

Understand, enjoy your new XR, it’s a really amazing device for its price.

Is there some kind of longevity of an Xs oled and an Xr lcd. Thinking of buying one and this is my concern.

Bought an Xs. Got one question. Why when I look at the center of the screen it is more yellow than from an angle? true tone off

Xs

OLED
4x4 MIMO 256 QAM
Dual lens
Stainless Steel
512GB option
Thinner Bezels
Darker Blacks
4GB RAM

if you don't "need" any of these then the Xr is for you. For me it is not, but I have 3 Xr that my family members are more than happy with.

YMMV

To be honest I’d dismiss that extra RAM as a reason. Why because XR has a smaller resolution and less pixels for the RAM to handle. the XS needs that extra RAM because of how high it’s resolution is ( especially the Max one) and dual cameras too

One more thing - in battery my screen was off for only one minute. How is that? It was lying unused for about 1-2 hours... is the screen still working?

You are surely correct for the dual cameras throwing a ton of additional data into the system that it needs to deal with. However more resolution doesn’t really need much ram these days. When attaching a higher res monitor to a computer you wouldn’t upgrade the ram either.

well if memory serves me I have seen posts here and there saying that the 6+ and iPhone X should of have had extra RAM because of how high they’re resolutions are though to keep them stable

Nowadays yes, back in the day (especially original iPad) it was an issue

I chose the XS because it's more compact. That was THE deciding factor. The two phones are so close in features that if the XR was more compact I would have chosen it (and saved some money).

I bought my XS Max before the XR was available. I like it, but my wife now has an XR and comparing the two, I would have bought the XR had it been available.

I asked this question to myself 2 months ago as well. Turned out, I decided to get XR, and I am VERY happy with the phone. As most of people say, you won't notice the bezel at all. I came from 6s+. The size of XR is DA BEST! It's perfect for one hand use (I am woman). The camera is much better comparing to my previous 6s+.

Additionally, I have a OLED-syndrome. I tried my sister's XS max, and I got a headache right away. No headache with my XR ever!

I planned to keep this phone for maybe 3-4 years.
