I was literally going to put up the same question. Glad I am not the only one thinking of this. I have an iPhone XR 256gb. Reason for getting this iPhone was due to its price and due to the lcd screen. I had tried the other screens gave me eye strains.

Since I have had the XR and it’s going to be 2 years in Nov 2020 I have got used to face id. However I wouldn’t mind going back to touch id. Have I got used to the big screen? Yes I would say I have but i do miss the smaller screen and also the smaller form factor of an iPhone too. I would love to be able to use a phone again one handed instead of using two hands and I have normal sized hands lol.

I don’t see what I would be missing if I do go for the new SE. Yes I guess I would pay a bit more for the downgrade. However am I mad to be thinking this??

I don’t have a laptop or an iPad the iPhone I do everything on when it comes to emails, writing up documents watching my shows and etc.

any thoughts? Anyone in the same boat as me???

Do you think the SE2 will be as loud and clear as an XR (both earpiece and bottom speaker I'm referring to) or will take that a nosedive? Camera without nightlight, appreciable difference vs XR camera?

well SE II's doesnt support wider stereo playback or Dolby Atmos like XR Does

this phone has Gigabit LTE which is a good thing but if it doesnt have the XR's garbage trash of a Modem and has the same ones as the 11 series ( or even the XS since its one is better too) its a good deal.

how do you feel about losing FaceID? faceID is nice, especially with an Auto Unlock tweak I have (if there's no notifications, unlock to home screen as soon as it detects my face which is most often near instant) but I'm sick of mashing in my passcode when it fails at random times with a ton of sunlight, or sunglasses on, or especially laying in bed
Even on my iPhone XR, I just use passcode. I have FaceID completely disabled. Touch ID really is great. I would like to see them implement it where you can touch anywhere on the screen to unlock.

I’ve had the XR since launch and still have not gotten completely used to the size, but I still voted “no” because I like FaceID and the extra screen space enough to wait until the 12 to see what other options I’ll have.

Just another anecdotal bit, I used to think the 6/7/8 form factor was too big and thought the original SE size was good, but now that I’ve had the XR for a while, I find the 6/7/8 size good. So everything is somewhat relative...
Same. It's not so much the screen size, but the weight of the phone that I can't get used to. When when I walk in gym shorts (Florida) and the phone hits my thumb, it hurts. I know that sounds stupid, but this thing is heavy.

That is a concern of mine. I doubt the speaker quality will be as good.

Can you tell me about this tweak?

A smaller SE sized X-style iPhone would sell like hotcakes too. That's the SE3 haha
Actually, one of the rumored iPhone 12 models is iPhone with 5.4" OLED and Face ID (on a smaller notch), whose width and height lie somewhere between iPhone SE 1st gen and 2nd gen.

Also, considering. Have never gotten used to the size of my XR. Being a light phone user overall, the size would be the main reason for me to switch. My only hesitation is I have seen reference to the upcoming 5.4" being smaller and didn't understand how that could be (did I misunderstand or is it because more of the screen will be used?) Is it likely that the overall dimensions of the 5.4" iPhone 12 will be smaller than this SE? Overall, I want the smallest new iPhone I can buy. Thank you for any input.

I’ve had my XR for 6 months now and I hate the size and weight of this thing. Still waiting for the rumoured 5.4” phone.

is this accurate? sits between SE and 8/SE 2nd gen? and how solid are these rumors?

OP, it really depends on your priorities. Some people prefer the size of the SE, some the screen on the XR. Personally, I can't imagine going back down in size.

I myself am also awaiting the 5.4” phone. I'm hoping for OLED and the top cpu and triple or double camera setup - essentially a modern iPhone XS, which will suit me just fine. If it ends up being an Xr with LCD screen in smaller size then nope I'll just get a used XS then and await 2021.

For now I'm going to be VERY frugal and wait this out.

Hang onto the XR and buy the SE. Try the SE on for size for 2 weeks. If you find you miss the XR too much then just send the SE back.

Let me just say, if Apple actually had made this phone a ‘4 inch’ form factor as they did with the 2016 SE, I probably would’ve purchased it just as a ‘back up’ phone to switch Sim cards in between my larger iPhone. That said, I still think this phone will be very successful long-term, but short term, it’s going to take some groundwork to get the word out this phone is now in their lineup.

A big difficultly facing this iPhone is the fact retailers are currently closed so it’s solely online marketing to get the message across. There’s no hands on retail exposure/experience and that may be crucial as the SE is ‘likely’ appealing to those who are less bothered about specs and more about size and familiar user interfaces.

I think it’ll be a successful device but a slow burner shall we say.

I have had second thoughts since I wrote my post. I will be staying with my XR. This is mainly due to this being my only device for everything I do such as internet, calls, messages, apps, writing up emails, documents and watching my shows etc. Plus the battery life is good on this XR.

if I did get the SE I would have to:

pay money towards it due to selling my XR won’t allow me to use those funds to buy an SE straight out. And I would probably end up spending more money to buy an iPad to do some things that I used to use my iPhone due to screen size. Plus money is an issue right now due to not working because of the lock down.

Good point.
Seems like the 2020 SE has the same tiny battery as the iPhone 8, 1821mAh. Even Apple stated that the battery life is only as "good" as the iPhone 8, which is probably not that great when you are used to the XR.

It’s really about portability for me. I like the iPhone XR when I am at my desk or on the sofa.

I prefer the iPhone SE when I am mobile or any situation where I am holding the phone for a long period of time. XR gets heavy quick.

I also have an iPad Pro, so that could be used for at home stuff and the iPhone for when I go out.

Funny thing about the SE, most people still called it the 5/5s.

Majority of the target market for the SE2 just aren't going to care what it's called. All they'll care about is size and price. Of course, that market isn't going to be rushing in droves to buy this asap. They'll just buy it when there's a need (old defective phone, lost or stolen, for kids, etc). The techies in this forum are the minority.

Yep. Most of the target market for this are probably the ones who would be recommended this device at brick and mortar stores.

Didn’t act and now there’s delays to shipping of early May

that helps with my indecision... for now :D

realistically Ishould chill. Xr works fine and its jailbroken andI just spent $1000 for the i5 mba to have akeyboard that isn’t butterfly (and to replace my 2016 pro which will act as A backup / secondary
Most likely now)

EDIT: changed my mind this deal for eligible sprint/verizon/att plans made it worth it. Getting a white 128gb SE delivered early May. and keeping XR. and of course, keeping SE1.
