Has anyone received an unaffected/non-yellow 12 Mini at this point, either as a replacement or as a first purchase?
While I have not been sensitized to yellow screens having never had one, darned if I can see the slightest trace of yellow in my launch day Mini. AB on, reduce WP off.

This is a defect. Unrelated to the yellow problem. A 12 PM (if not defective) will be a lot brighter.

My 12 Pro Max presents a combination of issues:
- Yellowish whites;
- Greenish grays;
- Reduced brightness;
- Reduced contrast;
- Background that flickers from black to green during startup;
- Excessively aggressive True Tone; and
- Overactive Auto-Brightness that changes the color balance depending on ambient light conditions despite True Tone being disabled.

Without technical knowledge, one can only speculate whether or not the issues are related.

Dear All, for all of you who have a TV oled or amoled, and i'm sure lot of you ( I wish ;) ).
Please put the " cinema mode " on your screen, and you will get the same white as on your 12.
It's to say : yellow.
This is only due to the colour accurancy.
I think Apple should let us adjust : green red and blue individually as on other android phone.
We could definitely close our case.
Concerning viewing angle, yes there is a little tint that begins at 45°.
for this i think we can't do nothing. Some screens are little better than other for this.
My second one is really better in this respect.
I have an LG OLED latest generation and it’s just as white as my week 47 12PM.

It may be because you are used to the 11 Pro Max. I remember the 11 Pro Max looking yellow next to the XS Max too.
(not even the slightest hint of yellow) means NOT EVEN THE SLIGHTEST HINT OF YELLOW. I have never had an iPhone screen, even back to my 4S (which I still have) that had a yellow screen like that on my 12 Pro Max. I've owned lots of iPhones and this is a new phenomenon for me.

I've noticed that there are quite a few recent posts here that are seemingly trying to convince us yellow screen folks that it's all in our imagination, or something to that effect.

I have a feeling the 12s will eventually be plagued by the same touch issue the iPhone 11s have (see recently issued repair program, which was also issued for the X) -- seems to be an issue with OLED screens with Apple. So some of us will be able to utilize that a year from now to fix the yellow screens 😂

I do have technical knowledge. The reduced brightness is an ALS issue. If you disable Auto Brightness, your screen will be much brighter. Reduced contrast will be fixed too.

All other issues are unrelated to this issue. This particular issue is hardware related and won’t be fixed via a software update.

Yellow/Black/Green all might be issues, but unrelated to AB or ALS.

It is possible this is a hardware or software issue and may or may not be partly fixed, I wouldn’t bank on a full fix. But Apple might fix non AB non ALS issues to make the devices tolerable.

I have anyway heard newer replacements are fine. So it is best to return by 8th Jan and buy a new device in Jan or Feb.

My 11 Pro is a bit yellow too. Compared to my X. My X might have been a bit yellow compared to my 7. You might have been super lucky or not that sensitive. But over the last few years each year has been on an average a bit yellower than the last. This year Apple screwed up big time by making super yellow screens.

Guess so. Apple is still new to the OLED game.

I do think it can be solved by software. If truetone is able to keep the screen much whiter, it is because some parameter can be altered to modify the tone of the screen.

I’m not talking of the yellow issue. I’m talking of the dullness/dimness issue. This issue is there since 2017. It just affects way more iPhones this year. Although it can be fixed in software, I’ll bet a thousand bucks Apple won’t do it. Not for every single iPhone sold much less.

Agree but that ship sailed. Apple will likely tighten their tolerances in future batches and it will be the end of this. And like you said, we’ll have a repeat next year.

Not even MacRumors on a slow day will give attention to this, which says a lot on the chances of this getting more attention. I emailed them when this all began to suggest they read their forums and do a story and never received a response.

I wonder what is behind the silence. I see so many non-news worthy things get reported on the site on a weekly basis that I’m honestly dumbfounded they have not done a story in this. I guess that maybe finding out that "App Store Best of 2020 Winners Began Receiving their Physical Award" is a much more important news story than there being an issue with the displays on the $700 - $1,000+ new iPhones Apple is selling.
If I had any kind of financial interest in any of these major technical sites I would not want want my site to be the one that made a major newsworthy announcement about a flaw that would cost APPLE millions of dollars to correct. Better it be left to those individuals who see the problem to just send their iPhones back and wait for next year's corrected product. My 2nd iPhone 12 Max will show up later this week. If it looks yellow compared to my current iPhone 11 Pro Max, I'll send it back and wait for the iPhone 13 Pro Max (does anyone here remember the technical site, and the grief it experienced, that ended up with, and reported on, a not-yet released iPhone that was found in a bar near the Apple headquarters?).

You got it! It’s DNPDP - I don’t know how to check the production week unfortunately. :)

Phone was also bought direct from Apple.com and is factory unlocked if that makes a difference.
Thank you, greatly appreciated.

You can use the tool I linked below. Just enter the serial number and it will give you the production week. Don’t worry, software is safe.

In fact the opposite iS true. If I owned a media house and could take Apple down, I would take them down. Because that sensational campaign would bring me to the No1 position while giving me leverage over Timmy’s balls.

Talking about products under NDA might be illegal based on the context. Reporting truth isn’t.

I would like to verify my understanding of this. An increase in display brightness after Auto-Brightness is disabled is always an indication that the ambient light sensor is defective. Is this correct?

No.

The below is only valid for Apple OLEDs:

If you set brightness to 100%, turning off AB will increase brightness if ambient lightning isn’t very high.

If however you’re in high ambient lightning (but not super high, example directly under the sun):

And if your brightness level isn’t 100 nor 0%. ideally test around 50%.

Then turning off AB shouldn’t increase brightness. If it does, it is an ALS defect.

It could be slight or extreme based on how much additional brightness you gain with AB off.

Slight can be ignored since it is very common these days.

Test:

Test to be done under below lighting conditions:

Artificial/Tube/LED light/Dark room/Not too much sunlight - (Indoors)

Autobrightness should be on/shouldn’t be turned off

Set brightness level manually to around 50%

Open Safari Google.com white background

Observe for 5-10 seconds

Turn off auto brightness

Again open same page on Safari Google.com

Wait 15-30 seconds

If brightness level increases a lot, ALS is defective. If brightness level stays same, phone is perfect.

Don’t do test at 100/0% brightness. Only middle level brightness. Don’t do test outside.

Please confirm receipt of this message.

Removed my poorly written response.

Read almost all pages of this thread (have the yellow tint as well).

1. Apple is not going to be issuing a software update to correct the yellowing. If this is what’s keeping you from returning/getting another to try - do it now while you can still return - guarantee Apple will not issue software update for the yellowing.

2. Yellowing is largely due to two things, one being LG and the other the ability to pass off these differences as display variances (i.e. no issues). Have 2 OLED TVs from LG, one is perfect and the whites match that of Iphone X with the OLED “wow” factor, and the other TV has the yellowing exactly matching that of the Iphone 12.

3. Apple will likely release update to fix flashing/green coloring but again, guarantee nothing for yellowing - return now if the latter is what you are waiting for.

4. Too many issues overall with this release. Inability to focus (hardware issue, will not be corrected via software update), gaps in frames, slow/pixelated cameras, dull display colors, flashing, etc.

5. Yes, you can adjust for the yellowing from “color filters” and have it match/look even better than oem, but this is not a solution, the photos you take will not be accurate once transferred to another device and in general, things you see on your phone will not be in their true nature.

No one should have to accept these things regardless of amount paid, never mind that these iphones were touted as the best of the best. I guarantee you that anyone/everyone saying the screen is “fine” and slightly “warmer” has 1) never seen/had a good display and/or 2) is not comparing the phone next to on that has a good display and therefore cannot tell how it should be. You are paying for the most expensive, top of the line phone from the largest company (possibly 2nd largest company now) in the world - there is no excuse, return 100x if that’s what it takes for you to get one you’re satisfied with without these issues - as it should be.
This. I second this.

My 12 mini problem is a bit different, but I think gives hope that a software fix can be implemented.
Moved from iPhone 8, as soon as I restored from iCloud onto the mini, I noticed how much better the screen is on the 12. On the 8, I always had brightness at around 75%, with True Tone, Night Shift, and Auto Brightness all turned off.
Had the mini setup same way, brightness at maybe 65%. I then decided to go into settings on the mini and turn on Night Shift because my wife said it's good for my sleep. Had it setup to Scheduled at 10PM on and 7AM off, turned on Manually Enable Until Tomorrow, slider to Less Warm. Looked at it, didn't like it, went back to turn everything under Night Shift off.

The problem is, my 12 mini screen never went back to the fresh, crisp display it was prior to my Night Shift experiment.
After I turned Night Shift off, I went back to finishing setting up some other apps and I thought to myself that it looks different. The screen is noticeably dimmer and has the slight yellow tint. I spoke to Apple support and they had me check all the usual settings which I already have done. The Apple person sucked, by the way. I have afterwards gone through Reset All Settings but still haven't gotten the screen to look like before the Night Shift tryout. Moreover, it definitely gets worse in the evening.

All of this makes me think that there is a software bug of some sort that is connected to Night Shift. I had only started having issues immediately after I enabled Night Shift. It was an instant difference, and the timeframe between me enabling Night Shift and then disabling it was less than 5 minutes. It is as if disabling it didn't fully work, and Night Shift is still affecting my display.

Can you disable Auto Brightness and again put the Mini to 65%? Does that fix the issue?

Do share your qualifications please. You can’t just say “I have technical knowledge” or “From past experience”. Are you a hardware/software engineer? Do you work on phones or at Apple? Being a good Googler isn’t the same as having technical knowledge.
