There’s one thing that hasn’t been mentioned. Your comment is echoed in many other device forums as well. Example, the Samsung note 20 forums , some folks are discontent when comparing their current Samsung note 20 ultra to their older Note 10, same with happened with each current generation. It’s the blue light filter reduction on oled panels year on year that causes the oled to look somewhat not as white and bright than previous generations. Bear in mind this hasn’t got anything to do with true tone being aggressively yellow nor the green tint.
So do we all accept 12 screens as they are or this is a defect and should be expecting apple to provide us the screens that looks like ones on X?

My point in summary was that current generation oled panels will not look like previous generation panels due to reduction in blue light filtering which is implemented during manufacturing. This information is out there for you to verify as are plenty of internet posts about comparisons of current oled panels by various phone makers that use Samsung panels to compared to their previous devices. It’s for those that are claiming their iPhones display don’t look as brighter or are yellower compared to their 11 pros with true tone and other gizmos switched off.
The aggressive true tone and green tint issues are not related to the above.

This isn't an oled thing or an iphone 12 thing, this has been going on for 12+ years.
Thats why I stir this up every year - with enough people demanding better tolerances, Apple will do it.
You certainly stir things up every year with the same “yellow display” thread and you push it aggressively. There’s never been a mainstream article on it simply because it is not a widespread issue.

I can’t recall the exact year that I ran deep-level measurements on several iPhone displays to offer a counter to your opinion, but I think it was the iPhone 7 year group. Anyway, back then every display measured was in fantastic shape and exhibited none of the yellow-ness that was presented in your thread back then. This year’s displays are excellent and I have yet to see one in person with the issues presented here. As I’ve said many times though, it does not mean there are not defective displays out there. Defective units are bound to exist with any product...it’s just not even close to being a widespread problem.

I was hoping Apple would fix the screens by now but no, my iPhone 12 Pro Max that came on 4th January has green glow and yellow tint, it’s going back for a full refund. I might get 11 Pro instead or something...

Production date: 2020 December, week 50, factory G6 (China, Shenzhen Foxconn).
Even though mine doesnt glow green, I was still being annoyed how bright the screen is in the dark when about to go to bed. This is with the brightness all the way down plus NS,DM and TT on. I‘m starting to think this is related to raised black.

Thanks for this thread that has 5600 posts. Mostly complaints, temporary band aid solutions, but no real progress or cures. Nothings changed. Seems like this has been an exercise in futility. Congrats 🍾🎉

EDIT: can’t wait for the iPhone 13 mega thread where we rinse and repeat this fiasco with the same results. Good luck!

No problem. Maybe one day we will get calibration controls and it’ll all be worth it.

For those wanting an explanation of how the green tint originates from.
Thanks useful link

some on here talk about the green tint on a black website (raised blacks). The link you posted refers to the green tint only when grey is displayed. Which one is it ?
Anyway not something I noticed so my panel should be good

So I don’t know what to do guys. I had a first dull and flickering display with a first pro max bought at launch that I returned one month or so ago. I ordered a new one that I just got 4 days ago and while the screen looks better, the flickering is still there in black pic/videos in low light. It’s really less visible than on the first one it seems, but still. So I don’t know : do I send it back and try re order again ? At the Apple Store the guy told me it’s a known issue that will be fix by software so he couldn’t take it in repair which would have been useless and wait, or return it.

Is there some 12 PM that don’t have raised black in any situation tested above please ??? I’m starting to feel like I have to live with it and maybe I will forget it later. But again when I see the IPhone 12 of my friend with a perfect screen without any flickering... I don’t know if I should play the lottery one more time and what my chances are

Nobody can tell you this, its up to you!

I sended all three iPhones back and will wait for the 13 Pro, i can live some month longer with my old iphone6s, but im not willing to pay 1200 Euros for this bad display.
You'll look day for day at this display and being reminded, its a mess. You want this?

My advice would be to keep it, use it, love it. I decided to keep mine and it is a great phone. When you're not comparing to another phone the screen looks great anyway :)

Yeah, I wonder if some have received a very bad yellow tinted panels. I can surely live with mine. Color filters does makes it significantly better. I lowered my expectations when finally using back an OLED panel device. Never got perfect experience with this type of screen.

Obviously your call, but in my humble view, while the yellow tint can be in future perhaps fixed with a software update, and in the short term excellently dealt with using colour filters, the other issue you mention seems more likely to be hardware related. I personally wouldn’t be able to accept that and I’d return it.

Yeah my real issue is not the yellow tint or anything, I kinda like my screen. It’s white enough and uniform as opposed to some others here. My problem that I can’t take off of my head (even if I don’t particularly see it in day to day usage) is the black flickering which screams hardware defect to me.

Again do someone here has a 12 PM tested with everything said above (black pic/vidéo at any brightness, low or high) without any any any black flickering or raised black ? Thank you :)

I know that this massively off topic and perhaps I’ll need just create a different thread, but after reading about this “gap between glass and aluminium”, I decided to test mine and my wife’s....
As you can see in the picture, the gap does exist - its not everywhere, just some spots.

I assume many models might be affected..

do you think this can result in any issues, especially with time? Or is it just bad for people with OCD?

Out of curiosity I also checked out the iPhone XR. As the second picture shows, some gaps were present on that one too, less wide. Paper needed to be pressed a bit more, while in the 12 the paper goes down more easily.

What if the 13 is the same?
Then if he/she chooses, try returning again until satisfied and if Apple decides to go substandard with the hardware again, get thier money back. The XS will be more than qualified to go another year from next September.

And the year after? At some point, they will have to get a new phone, and either they will have to accept the warmer / more yellow displays, or they will have to switch to some Android phone, although most high end Android phones also use Samsung OLED displays and have also trended more yellow this year. See Limeybastids posts on the previous page... clearly this change was intentional, actually a feature of the display meant to reduce blue light so that it doesn't affect your sleep cycle as much. I don't like it either, but I swapped a couple times and got one that was at least slightly better than the other two and acceptable to my eyes. Better than holding on to my aging iPhone X for another year only to run into the same thing next year. I only had to pay $399 for my 12 Pro Max because AT&T gave me $700 for my 3 year old iPhone X... that offer would have been off the table had I waited another year because the offer only applied to iPhones from the last 3 years being traded in.

LOL Dude, let's take this one step at a time. The majority concensus in this thread is this is a hardware defect. Let's hope Apple does the right thing so we don't have to go to Android.

You're both wrong, although you are less wrong :). The yellow tint is definitely not intentional but it also not a hardware defect. It's bad calibration or just a bad quality OLED panel. If we're talking flickering/raised blacks, yeah that a defect in my book.

I believe that article explains how the green tint derives and what causes / created it during manufacturing process.
I also believe the green tint and raised blacks are two separate issues.

LOL, hardware defect. That's a good one.

1) This thread has shown that 99% of iPhone 12s have an extremely similar, warm / yellow color temperature with only minor variations. Even the so called "good ones" from this thread are still warmer / more yellow than screens from previous years.

2) Apple support and engineering have explicitly stated to many people in this thread that the warmer / more yellow color temperature is as intended and not a defect.

3) Nothing has changed about the screens or calibrations after 3 months. If this is such an obvious hardware defect, surely Apple would have fixed it by now.

It's not like it's difficult to find an iPhone 12 with a screen that's more yellow than screens from previous years. They pretty much all are! So obviously Apple engineers know this and signed off on it. They manufacture thousands of iPhones for testing and development by the engineering teams before they ever go on sale to consumers. You think all of those magically didn't have more yellow screens than previous years, and then the manufacturing equipment and calibration machines at iPhone factories around the world all simultaneously broke and started producing nearly identical "defective" screens after Apple engineers signed off on the samples and early production units? Give me a break... Apple wanted to calibrate the screens this way for whatever reason. It's not hard to apply a color tint and make the screens look like previous years (although that reduces brightness), so clearly Apple could have calibrated them the same way they calibrated screens in previous years, but they chose to change the calibration this year, maybe to improve efficiency and battery life since there are smaller batteries this year, or maybe it was necessary to hit a lower price point while still being able to achieve the same brightness as previous years, who knows.
