Observations from an very OCD hour at the Apple Store this evening. Buckle in!

I compared my phone to over 10 display models. None of them - legitimately none of them - looked anywhere near as good as the iPhone X’s display. Funny enough, it wasn’t even that the iPhone X looked significantly cooler. It had much more of a pure white to it, whereas the newer phones had more green. If you glanced back-and-forth quickly enough the iPhone X would briefly appear heavily magenta tinted.

I was actually impressed by the consistency, even if the tuning clearly isn’t for me. My phone was basically just as warm as all of the others. I could maaaaaybe say I found 1 or 2 that looked noticeably cooler, but even after 5 minutes of side-by-side with the 2 “golden examples” I couldn’t say for sure. I did find 2 that were noticeably warmer than my phone, but again, very subtle.

Frankly, it was very difficult to see any difference whatsoever. Part of the reason for that - this might interest you @LFC2020 - is that my screen was substantially less bright than every single display model. Every one of them. Brightness is crucial to judging white balance, so this threw me off. When the display models were cranked, they looked warmer than my screen. When they were dimmer they looked cooler.

I am damn near certain the brightness issue is a *software* thing, where the iOS running on the demo models allows them to be cranked all day long but it doesn’t allow it for us due to battery/thermals.

I also compared my 13 Pro to a couple of the lingering iPhone 12 non-pro models, though I believe they had a different panel source from the 12 Pros everyone was groveling about last year. They were definitely warmer than any 13s I saw. One 12 mini in particular looked wildly out of tolerance. Either way, 13 and 13 Pros (including my own) were undeniably cooler across the board, but not remarkably so.

Also of note for me personally is that I never hopped on this roller coaster until the 12 Pro came out. White point looked fine on all of my old iPhones as far as I can remember, and I still have an 8+ lying around as my work phone that looks different from the X but still “correct” to my eye compared to 13 Pro.

All in all, I’m actually pretty happy with my findings. If I walked in there and immediately saw that my phone was radically worse, I’d be buying myself a ticket to the screen lottery iPhone replacement game that we all know can become a rabbit hole.

Instead my conclusion is this: due to panel supplier, purposeful calibration choice, or some combination thereof, iPhone screens look different than they did a few years ago.

This is probably a new reality that many of us will have to live with for a while, at the very least until mini or micro LED tech supersedes OLED on phones.

I have found that leaving my phone in light mode during the day is helping to “train” my brain to care less, because I’m exposed to the glaring off white over and over again until it gets normalized to me. Maybe give that a shot if you all are in the same boat.

I may or may not hang around this thread much longer, depending on whether I feel it’s helping my OCD or hurting it. That is a huge part of the equation for me- as I said, I’ve been medicated for it my entire adult life, and my desire for perfection in every aspect of my new tech toys has been a facet of that struggle since I was a kid. In middle school, I would keep my gameboy between two pillows to avoid it getting “scratched” and then spend hours looking for flaws that were never there. The second that GameBoy was no longer the latest and greatest obsession, the mental grip it had lightened considerably. I’d have given up a lot to reclaim all of the time and stress I poured into worrying about it.

It’s probably high time that I accept that this phone situation is no different. You all seem like good people. Take care of yourselves.
Thank you for being so candid and honest about your ocd. I’m really suffering with it lately as well as anxiety and depression. Sounds stupid but these damn new phones have been a source of excitement for me but now not so much because what if my battery life isn’t as good or I have green/ red tint (I do). What if there is dust or bubbles in my screen protector. It’s driving me crazy and I absolutely hate it. Refreshing to see someone talk about it so openly. Take care mate and hang in there!

Thanks for the kind words. I just think it’s important to acknowledge that angle of things, because many of us here are likely in the same boat.

There’s a reason that, even in a media economy so hungry for new “-gate” scandals every year, we’ve never seen a major hullabaloo about the screens. And it’s not just (admittedly inattentive) YouTubers collaborating to keep some dirty secret under wraps.

Most people don’t notice, and even of the small fraction of folks who do, an even smaller fraction care enough to find their ways to threads like these. My attention to detail has become something of a super power at my job, where I’ll immediately notice the tiniest discrepancies/changes. Oh how I wish I could turn it off, though.

My DMs are always open if anyone here wants to speak about their OCD. It’s a driving force in my life and I know just how stressful it can be. Near debilitating sometimes.

I wish I didn’t notice things too! Wish there was an off switch.

This is interesting but probably not the case for our observations. To my knowledge, apple does not order panels that Samsung has designed, they only use Samsung to *physically manufacture* them. Apple defines the spec and designs the display beyond that.
The blue light reduction is done at the manufacturing process by Samsung.

Ask yourself this question. Why are Samsung OLED panels used by oem vendors and Samsung mobile themselves “yellower” than previous incarnations. Were you aware of this?
Complaints and concerns like this are not unique to iPhones. The common denominator across the board is the panel manufacturer. What I linked and mentioned earlier is my logical reasoning( guess ) as to why panels have gone “yellower “during these last few years.

Are you checking out the phones at the apple store for us on Friday? 😁🧐📱

Now do the same test using a Samsung Note 9 or 10 against current Samsung mobile devices and the same with OnePlus 7 pro against current OnePlus devices. You’ll find a similar conclusion.

Well I was at my carrier store recently too and comparing 13 Pro to S20 and S21. Definitely preferred its color over both of those, which weren’t even overly warm but just… wonky looking colors.

We need an ambassador who can go to the Apple store and compare screens with different sets of units.

@LFC2020 i still think you have a perfect screen iPhone. I’m having a hard time believing it’s a defect unit.

Maybe I can check them out for you tomorrow, if they let me into the iPhone section. 🤦‍♂️😂

That’s not what I suggested was it buddy ? 😃
In a nutshell, from owning various flagships over the last few years the so called issue is across the board. Not unique to Apple.

Correction, I meant Friday.
Red tint , check. Panel brightness , what method ?
Put the phones side by side, with auto brightness off, true crap and night crap off, bump them up to 100% 😁

I would’ve checked, but they’ve barricaded off all of the products, no touching. 👉🚫📱

Also, I’m not sure how the Apple Store near me will be currently shop floor wise. When I bought my iPhone 12PM and MacBook Pro in January 2021 the shop floor wasn’t accessible. Two lines were outside. One for genius appointments and the other for pickup orders.

All good mate, you probably don’t want to touch all them phones after all them grubs who don’t wash their hands have thrashed them.

Indeed. But we’d also need access to their cupboard which should preferably be pitch dark.
Give them your drivers license, tell them you’re leaving the store for 10 minutes so you can test them out in the underground carpark.

I’m sure they won’t mind. 😁😂
