I absolutely hate how Safari handles tabs in Safari 8, and this is absolutely the reason why. It used to be you'd get a drop down button on the right hand side when you needed to look at tabs that couldn't fit. Now you're forced to scroll through individual tabs until you find the one you're looking for.

That's funny, as I hated the way the old version of Safari gave you the drop down thingy when you had too many tabs open. I really like how the new version of Safari (8.0) handles tabs. I have my Performance Mouse MX set up to go through the tabs when you press sideways on the scroll wheel. Works a treat!

I don't want to open up a new thread but is there a way how to get the favicons to Safari 8 tabs? I suspect Glims is currently outdated and I haven't found any other solution.

Apart from missing favicons (which makes it INCREDIBLY hard for me to orientate), I like the new Safari and I'm considering using it as my default browser instead of Chrome.

Give it time and there might be. Yosemite isn't even released yet. Personally I don't feel they're needed but if a third party can add an option then why not? Otherwise there's always Firefox.

Definitely missing Glims since I switched to Yosemite. Hope it will be updated soon, it's the little things...

It's not enough to make me switch away from Safari. I'm kind of liking this new clean look of Safari 8.

a +1 for this - I really really want to be able to have fav icons both in the tab bar and in my bookmarks list. Strangely if you go to edit your bookmarks in Yosemite the icons ARE displayed so it's clearly something that can be switched on in Safari

I switched over from Chrome since I updated to 10.10, and switched back to Chrome after a day... Safari just feels weird and clunky to me. Sure, the scrolling is smoother, but the lack of plugins and also this favicon thing drove me away. If I'm working on 20 tabs at a time, i don't want to be scrolling through a list of tabs...

My Version of the Complaint is ...

Okay, I might have to live with a pop-up when clicking on the URL bar. But at least make it possible to change the images, like we can for applications!

I've attached a screenshot that shows that some websites have their own icons [on the left-hand side of the picture], but the URL pop-up [top center] only shows a generic icon. Why is Safari not using the same icon in both places?

YES!!! EXACTLY! It's so mind boggling. Even the colour of the compass icon fits the overall colour of the favicon, meaning that the icon is being read by safari 8, but is not displaying the image, merely colour. (Mac rumour's icon is showing though)

I should not have clicked "Clear History and Website Data". Ever since then my favicons have been deleted and after visiting the pages again only some icons (4/20) have been showing. It's a problem on my iPhone 4s, iOS 7.1.2 too! Laptop- MBP Retina 2014, 15inch, OS X Yosemite, Safari 8.

I think that’s because those large icons aren’t favicons but web-app icons. You can see those when you create home-screen bookmarks on your smartphone or tablet. I think Apple chose those for aesthetic reasons, as favicons are a lot smaller and would result in pixellated icons. Instead they use generic icons but with the colour of the favicon where such a web-app icon is not available.

Edit: Some websites like YouTube do have these web-app icons, but they reserve them for their mobile websites. So while YouTube would have an icon on the home screen of your smartphone or tablet, it doesn’t have one for the desktop website. That explains why YouTube only has a generic icon in Safari.

safari 8 is (with no argument) the fastest web browser for osx however something as minor as the lack of favicon on tabs.. or at least tabs that are better defined (aka firefox) prevents me from using it.

another thing.. is there a way to change the search/url box from a fixed-width box in the middle of the toolbar into a full variable width box like every other browser?

Exactly, it annoys so very much! Does anyone know if it's possible to add / edit your own favicons for websites? Maybe change the images somewhere?

The lack of favicons and squishing of tabs simply hurts productivity. I gave safari a shot due to claims of speed and the nice handoff functionality. But what good is speeding up the browser by a few percentage points when it takes me more than twice that amount of time trying to find the damn tab I'm looking for. And on top of that the "show all tabs" shortcut is "shift+command+\"... yeah because that just flows... should be called a longcut rather than a shortcut.

Whatever, I tried. No more squinting and searching and trying to decipher from various shades of light gray. Back to Chrome and being more productive.

That was my experience also

To me, this is close to perfect:

My first encounter with Web (previously known as Epiphany) was around a week ago, with PC-BSD. Just one criticism of the essence of the app: unless I'm missing a trick, there's no support for bookmarklets.

if that's close to perfection why are you not using Linux already?

I absolutely hate having fav icons all over the place. Makes any browser window turn instantly into a cluttered mess. Thank God Apple shares the same feeling.

Oh my giddy goddy aunt, favicon, favican, favican't Apple customers have choice?

… Thank God Apple shares the same feeling.

Do you also believe that Apple thinks it heavenly to prevent use of things that many users have used for maybe a decade?

Our concepts of godliness differ.

n-evo, have you prayed to your god to smite the World Wide Web Consortium for its association of favicons with pleasure?

Does your god provide a Prayback Assistant, are you a beta prayer?

Lighting a candle and saying my prayer every day to keep those evil fav icons away. Whatever it takes, grahamperrin. Whatever it takes.
