The iPhone 8 Plus is the best phone ever made

I wish my carrier would have 36 month agreements instead of 24. That way I would start out paying less and then eventually pay the rest off.
That’s what I’m doing this year. I paid off my X and did my Max on a 36 month plan which I’ll pay off when I want to.

Fine, semantics, it is a form factor and product line that is being replaced one year after launch. The XR is the new budget phone. There will be no Apple phones with borders. Ok, it’s not a “dinosaur “ but why would you buy one now that the XR is close to out? No Apple phones will have home buttons, Touch ID or bezels in a year. The 8 will be the shortest product cycle ever.
I think Apple will still be selling the 8 next year as it’s entry level phone just like it’s still selling the 7 plus this year.

Bigger screen, Face-ID, no home button, edge to edge, .....

Sorry, 8 plus is a dinosaur and should never have been made. The whole "8" line was marketing to get people to buy an old phone with a new name to minimize the sticker shock of the X.

Mic dropped.............

The XS is the beginning of exactly what happened with the 6-8 line-up. Ming, who has perhaps the best track record of any analyst out there, has already stated the 2019 line-up will feature the exact same design. Shocking! So that will be what, three X designs in a row? What will you do with your dinosaur X, XS, XSS come 2019? Sorry to inform you but this is nothing new.

As to your other points in regard to the 4 XR devices you are getting our family:
- 6.1" display is measured diagonally from the corners which do no account for the notch. Hate to burst your bubble but the 8 Plus will still have more surface area especially when viewing videos in 16:9. Not everything is as it seems on paper.
- Face-ID....what about it. There are as many arguments for it as against it. Are you one of those who gets excited over everything shiny? Here, in the tech forums mind you, are countless threads of enthusiasts wanting Touch-ID back.
- No Home Button. And? So now it looks more like many android phones. SO futuristic
- Edge to Edge. Except that the bezels on the XR are larger than the X, XS, and XS Max. And the notch. And the silly colors circa iPhone 5C. That was a real innovator there.
-Oh, you forgot to mention, the 326ppi on the XR compared to 401ppi on the dinosaur 8 plus. You know, that of the two, only one is actually a 1080p screen. Guess which one. That is laughable.

Here, I picked up your Mic for you. You clearly dropped it on accident.......

A lot of people did and are buying the iPhone 8 despite the XR coming out this month, me included. The 8 series will undoubtedly be sold for at least a couple of years yet. You don’t seem to realise that not every consumer is driven by the look of a device and whether an iPhone has FaceID or not is not an issue for everyone.

I don’t think Apple sell a ‘budget phone’ as such but the iPhone 7 is currently their entry level offering. The 8 and XR are towards the middle of their range. I thought you were being a bit tongue in cheek earlier in the thread which is why I joked with you but it looks like you are pushing the exaggeration hype after all.

Well said ARizz44. You hit the nail on the head! Latest doesn’t mean greatest.

Not following you at all on your comment where you are sorry to inform me, it makes no sense. I’ll get whatever is new. Anyway, I stopped reading because if this.

Mic dropped again!

I have the Xs max but Id rather have the 8 plus than the Xr.

Lol you are funny. If you don’t understand how tech works, then I guess you’d be wise to drop a mic since no one would benefit from listening LOL. Regardless, you kept reading. We all know you did. But when one gets owned and has no retort, they often shy away with a comment such as yours. It’s ok. Enjoy those 2011 screens you preorder tonight.

Exactly the same here as well.

Exactly the same here as well.

You win if it makes you feel better. Still using VHS tapes ??Badaboom!

I passed on the X and went 8+.

My wife went X. The 8+ is a bad@$$ phone. It’s twice as accurate as the FID on my wife’s X. I work in IT, have owned almost every iPhone made and actually tested devices for a living.

The X is nice but in use it isn’t better than my 8+. Now the XS.. I’ve seen battery tests showing it outlast the 8 +. I’m likely going XS as I want a smaller phone but the 8+ is still one of the best phones Apple has ever made.

Did you vote in the poll?

Just curious, what does FID stand for?

I’ve seen you mention the poll several times. Once you questioned if the results might be different outside of a tech community. Now, I’m not trolling you. I’m just wondering, are you using this data for a study? Just vastly curious? Or are you hoping to validate your choice using this poll? For instance, if the numbers were reversed, would you feel better in your decision to stay 8 Plus? Do the numbers present make you question your feelings? Pure honest questions. I’m not passing any judgment here.

My guess is he’s stating he finds Touch ID is more acurate than Face ID (FID).

Got it. I just wanted to know if it was a data point I should factor in while deciding which iPhone to get. Thanks!

FaceID
[doublepost=1539880428][/doublepost]The poll is what it is. The 8+ will never be voted the best phone, even iPhone, ever made. Many passed on it. It’s not NEW. It’s likely not better, overall, than the new iPhones. Now that FID is faster I am more willing to accept it and no touch for passwords will be gravy.

The 8+ is ONE OF the best iPhones ever made. The poll doesn’t ask this. Even if just iPhones would still likely be under 50% with the 4S, 6S & new iPhones being more popular.

WTS, anyone who has used the 8/8+ knows how good of a phone it is. Not greatest.. but very, very good.

Just interested. That’s all. I feel like Apple is kinda going backwards in some respects. Change for the sake of change. And the herd follows.

Fair enough. I think it is the bolded sentence that I might take slight issue with. Consider this: I am not a fan of android and am not interested in phones that use that OS which limits me to iOS devices.

- I did not like that Apple eliminated the headphone jack. However, I like new tech and was not going to hold onto my 6S forever and so I looked at my choices and determined the pros of the 7 outweighed the cons and moved forward. Not blindly following as a herd would.

- I did not like that the X was so narrow, similar to a 4.7" phone. I also didn't prefer face ID to touch ID. I felt given the smaller size of the X screen (the surface area of 5.5" plus being more than the surface area of the 5.8" X has been covered from here to the moon), combined with the 19.5:9 made watching native 16:9 videos awful with the letterboxing. So, I chose to go with the 8 Plus. Had nothing at all to do with price. No herd following there.

- Now, the XS Max has addressed the screen size issue I had with the X. My videos are great size again, the notch does not interfere, the camera is by far the best I have used on any iPhone, the speakers are much louder like they claim, the stereo recording in video is great at concerts, and I am enjoying the OLED screen. I still don't have a headphone jack. I now have to use Face ID when I still prefer Touch ID. But it is far from a 'Apple sheep / herd follows' scenario. Again the pros outweighed the cons for me, this time compared to both the X I passed on and 8 Plus I owned.

Does this make the 8 Plus a bad phone? Not to me it doesn't. Is it the best iPhone ever made? I think at the very minimum that is subjective but one could argue that to be objectively false as well. The Max does have a better chip, it does have a higher PPI screen, it does have a marginally better camera, it does have a higher IP rating, it does have better speakers. Those things really cannot be argued. One can argue whether they are worth the extra price. But that is not what this thread was about. I also don't get caught up in the 'dated' look. I work in a building with 9,000 other employees. I can tell you right now that the high majority of iPhones here have bezels and home buttons. Even with the X having been out a year. These people don't care. People in my social life don't care. It blows my mind that we have gone from a community that had to fend off android loving trolls all day long to now having to battle our fellow iPhone users. And for what? A bunch of strangers acting like having the newest phone makes them somehow more 'elite'. I have nothing but respect for those who have the latest/greatest phone but are here to help and discuss, not degrade and brag. Relentless Power is a great example. He justified his purchase, made, and carries about his business without a single sense of being 'better' than someone using an older model.

There are people who cannot afford the new phones and there are people who cannot justify the purchase of the new phones and there is a stark difference in the two. And neither person should be pitied or looked upon condescendingly. Polls don't always tell the entire story and in the end, bickering occurs because certain folks feel offended that others don't share their same view. It's an oddity I don't understand.

Is Apple making some changes for the sake of change? Maybe. But look around. A lot of competitors seem to be following suit as quickly as humanly possible. Those changes leave us as the consumer with a few choices: Accept the change because the overall pros outweigh the cons, reject the changes and stay with our current device, or switch platforms and try something new. I am not part of a herd. I made a choice.

Can add I work at a tech/data firm and in an IT-focused group. No one cares about the new iPhones. One guy got the X because he needed a new phone. Another guy got a red 8 because he needed a phone. The developer we work with uses a 6S caseless. I recently complimented him on the headphone jack.

Most people don’t care.

Right. Good comments. Maybe I just feel like Apple is trying to ram the X/Xs category down everyone’s throats. This is an interim stage toward that goal. And not everyone likes it, including me. I don’t want the 6/7/8 category to disappear.
