OCZ has lifetime warranty and it is very good. They cross shipped some PC ram to me (w/ a hold on my CC, but no harm done). Essentially they take your CC# and put an authorization amount for the price of the ram, ship you a new set, you box up the old set and ship it back and they never charge your CC. You have to pay shipping one way, but ram is really cheap to ship.

Moral of the story is OCZ is a GREAT company to work with (real people on the phone, instant messaging and email). They have great products (I've used lots of their ram in PCs). They have great warranty (see above) and this RAM is the exact specifications for the MBPros, great for the 4gb upgrade. I bought two sticks and will update once I've received the RAM and my MBP.

Get em' while their hot! This is a super good deal.

Is there any deal on Mac Pro memory around? I'm looking for a 2x2GB.

Deals change day to day, so you have to do some research, or check DealRAM but make sure you identify your machine correctly.

Check Crucial (link above)
Data Memory Systems
OWC (MacSales)
or Kingston -- but you MUST choose the Kingston RAM specific to the Mac Pro - not the generic FB-DIMMs.
You are generally not going to find MacPro FB-DIMMs with apple approved heatsinks from the standard PC Generic and Big Box sellers.

Please try searching the forums, there are multiple threads already addressing RAM sources.

I'm sorry CanadaRam but I think you misunderstood my post, I saw that they were talking about a deal on FRY.com and I was wondering if they knew about a similar deal but for the mac pro.
I've purchased ram before from OWD and NewEgg and I wasn't asking for suggestion on where to buy, just looking for a deal.
Thanks for your reply

There isn't a large enough market for FB-DIMMs that you're going to see great deals on them. DDR2 RAM is getting cheap because the market is very saturated and because DDR3 is just around the corner.

Quick question, I've seen some ram that's been reported as having 5-5-5-12 latency, the one listed on the first post of this thread, the OCZ has 5-5-5-15. Is there any difference??? Do they both use crucial chips in their ram?

Thx

..

Hi, im interested in buying the 4 gigs. but I have a few questions. How much battery life would 4 gigs take? also I hear its like a gamble for ram for macs. Some work some don't. Has anyone had bad luck with certain brands? Also one last question, would the ram from the new SR MBP work in a first version macbook? Thanks

Yes

nice...

of course, the longer you wait, the cheaper it will be.

if you can hold off till leopard, then you might get an even bigger bargain.

True. Or dram prices could go up because of increased demand for Oss' like Leopard that can use massive amounts of Ram. Unlikely yes but it's possible.

Core Duos only take up to 2 GBs (revA))
Core 2 Duos take up to 3 GBs (revB)
SR Core 2 Duos take up to 4 (revC)

If you're doing video editing/rendering and audio production with Logic/Pro Tools, you can never have too much memory. Real time effects and plugins drain memory.

Also, hardcore Photoshopping is easier with more memory. Even if you don't do any of that stuff, you can have like 500 browser tabs/windows open at one time. :) In short, memory helps with how many processes are taking place at one time.

I have two gigs of RAM in my MBP right now (it is not the SR MBP). So it's only able to support 3 gigs. Would there be a problem mixing RAM? Like, putting 2 gigs of this ram, mixed with the 1 gig from Apple?

I've heard mixing brands is bad? Did I get bad info? :p

Cheers,
Alex

I also would like to know, if theres a difference between those timings?

Crucial doesn't make chips. Crucial uses Micron.

I'm really not sure if OCZ uses Micron or not, but the difference in latency isn't going to be noticeable.

Yeah I can't get any info on these chips either but I know OCZ has a lifetime warranty on them and they're used by pc overclockers all the time.

Changing the memory of the mac book pro..

:)

i just ordered my 4gb ram ! international shipping to italy 19$

in some days my macbook 2.2 will arrive and hope the ram too !

:D

Hi,

Which web site did you order from in US that offered international delivery? 19$ for Italy looks good - I wonder if they sent to UK..

Also, what about the custom and excise taxes for import? I guess that would be different for each country..

Does changing the RAM yourself invalidate the guarantee?

Regards,
K.

ram is user upgradeable, Apple has a document showing you how, so not it won't invalidate the warranty. However, obviously Apple will not cover the new RAM, that will be done through where you bought it. Also, if you mess up anything during installation, that messed up thing will no loger be covered. (Easy process to do, don't see how something would get messed up)

Put on the brakes...

.

I was so ready to do this after reading this post...

I get an educational discount.

What a great idea... get the 2.2 lower end Santa Rosa MBP and buy 4 gigs of Ram from a reputable buyer.:) :) :)

I went to the Apple store online, then remembered...

The lower end MBP only has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 128MB of GDDR3 SDRAM...

Whereas the upper 15" and the 17" have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM

Is this going to affect performance??? Especially in light of Audio/Video stuff. You can't upgrade the Video Card on these, correct?

It doesn't make a big difference. If I had the extra $500 for the 2.4 at the time of purchase I would have done it, but not really for the VRAM.

And no, you can't upgrade the video card. 4GB of RAM is probably going to make a bigger difference than the extra 128MB of VRAM in most cases.
