I have a question about desks. My setup is nice, but my DREAM setup would require a different desk to enable it.

Basically, what I want is a solid wood desk with a flat top to which I could attach a clamp-on VESA arm for a 24" LCD and a clamp-on architect's lamp. I want it to be solid wood so that I can build and attach a box on the side to put my MBP in and still have the cables be accessible. I need the top surface to be 30" x 60", and I need a keyboard shelf. Drawers would be nice, but not necessary.

The trouble is that I can't find anything like this on the Interwebs. It increasingly looks as though I would have to build it myself. It's not THAT daunting of a task, except that I haven't really got appropriate tools. I've seen some desks that would be pretty nice except that they have a back beneath the top surface (the kind that you would kick while sitting at the desk) so I wouldn't be able to clamp a VESA arm/lamp to them. I suppose that if nothing else, I could carve a spot out of the back panel for the clamps to go in, but that doesn't sound like a very good idea.

Has anybody got any thoughts for a desk that would suit?

On the moon.
I'd probably build one immense gaming PC with a Core 2 Quad,8 GB of DDR2, and Dual 9800GX2s, get me a 30" display, and a crapton of games.

Oh, and a MBP thats maxed out to replace my Dell.

At the risk of being too philosophical, a completely immersive computational experience, as in, a direct brain interface as seen often in sci-fi would be quite awesome... I'll take one of those, please! =p

New Mac Pro, Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core) - somewheres around 1TB in each drive bay, blah blah.

That'd be overkill for a web designer, though, right?

It's a little overkill. I do some graphic/web work and this setup would be a dream to work with.

A 17" (I hate screens larger then 17") iMac, with a 2.7 GHz G6 :)p)processor, 6 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD, and of course, the aluminum Apple keyboard.

Ahhhhhh.

But you know, being realistic, a MBA with a built in Combo Drive.

Unless we're actually dreaming for currently existing Apple products, in which case I guess I'll have top of the line MBA, a top of the line Mac mini, and and top of the line iPhone. That would satisfy me perfectly.

EDIT: Oh right, pictures. :p

Hm, I don't dream a maxed-out Mac Pro because I just don't need it, I might be more comfortable with somethings smaller, simpler and with good performance, something similar to a top-of-the-line iMac. :D
I also really love Dell displays, I would have a second 24" display for the iMac. A logitech wireless keyboard + mouse + headphones kit would be nice too. (I like logitech, too bad their stuff is expensive)
For the laptop, a simple white macbook (though I prefer aluminum-styled Apple laptops, the Pro is too heavy and the Air, well, not for me).
Of course, all connected via an Airport Extreme with a good printer.

of course everyones going to want a maxed out Mac Pro for their dream setup!… thats why i only dreamt of a setup i need. i have no use for 2 extra TBs, 24 more gigs of RAM and the NVIDIA Quadro (not a gaming card more for scientific uses).

well my realistic dream setup wouldn't be my dream setup would it?

ya i have my dream setup right now except for a nicer 2nd monitor and i need my stereo fixed it has so much reverb or noise when nothing is being played, i think i need a bigger amp

the amp came with 2 speakers
i now have 8
so a better monitor and an amp (with a woofer or a separate one)

anyone know where i can get an amp like that?

my dream setup

My dream set-up is more focused on the monitor configuration and the desk/chair than the computer itself. My computer right now is a Mac Pro 8x2.8 with 12 GB, 2x500, 2x1000, 4x750 disks, and 3x2600 video cards.

My main display is an Apple 30". I also have 2x24" and 2x17" in portrait mode.

I wish that ViewSonic still sold the VP201s panel--I'd like to replace the non-30" displays with portrait mode 1200x1600 panels. Unfortunately, those are pretty hard to find in a silver case aside from a cheap HP and I'm not sure I trust it not to have the backlight buzz.

So I plan to try buying 5 widescreen 20" panels and running them at 1050x1680. It's not quite 1600 but it's close enough. I'm not sure the Apple panels can be rotated when using the VESA bracket, so I will probably just buy the new $290 Dells.

Aside from that, my dream system would include the Maxo BioMorph desk. It's about $3,000 shipped and 96" x 55" with a large keyboard surface.

My compromise it to buy another 6' desk and a 5' credenza to complete a "G" shaped work area measuring about 9' x 10'. My current "U" shaped desk is 6' x 8'. (I am moving soon and will have about 400 sq ft for my home office.)

Omi's dream setup

2376096087_3ef5d41beb.jpg

My Dream setup

Intel iMac of almost any sort. Im not picky.
Wireless Mouse and Keyboard Please ;)
Bose Companion 3 II speakers
Apple iPhone J. I wish they had extra cheap 4gb. I don't need much storage.
Any MIDI keyboard
A new good iMovie camcorder
Tangerine/Lime iBook (i luv em)
Any sort of electric drum kit

The furniture is just shapes from keynote and a chair from google images. Not what I want or what I have

I am saving up for a similar setup to the above except every thing will probably be second hand and I might stick with the old camcorder I have now.

I would like all this to be in my room but in my Tokyo apparto right now, I don't think I would have enough room. poo.

Ohwell!

Well I have 3.15tb internal, and 2 externals totaling 820 gb. so I guess I have about 4TB or so. I do multimedia sometimes, & animation, so I guess it's all relative to what you hope to accomplish with the hardware.
The internals are for workflow, The externals are for backups.
OH, Yeah, I almost forgot my 100 GB Music server external FW.
So, for myself, 4TB at least.:D

How about something somewhat realistic?

24" iMac
3.0ghz Quad Core
8GB RAM
2 TB of storage
8800gt 512 graphics
Blu-Ray? (to rip blu-ray disks and upconvert standard dvd's for apple TV)

that would be sweet
