Oh, man, you just reminded me that I'm still using MiniKeePass on a daily basis! That definitely counts as a free, often-used app for me, too bad it is going to shake hands with the dodo at the end of 2020. I'll probably be moving to Strongbox, which has a freemium business model.

I moved to KyPass. Not free but it’s a one time purchase and totally worth it.

Hmm most used is Apollo & Spotify. I’d say between the two, apollo is the coolest app for Reddit. Downloaded for free and paid for the features bc it’s worth it.

Ideal for music control when driving.

Does it have completely reliable voice control via Siri? Because when driving you should be focussed on the road and your hands should be on the wheel.

Procreate - Ever since I bought it on the first generation iPad, I bagged Procreate out of curiosity before the Apple Pencil was a thing. Simply using my fingers those days.

Youtube, the second most used lately since I can’t get enough Donut and Hoonigan vids

Wikipanion - A no nonsense Wikipedia reader. Used the iPhone version for years and well, I’m loyal.

Kindle - well, it’s kindle...

Wow I didn’t know Procreate has been around since that long.
I used to use Paper by WeTransfer (was by 56) back in my iPad 3 days, also using bare finger.

I have enjoyed playing a game called Elves vs. Dwarves. It is a free game, but people can buy stuff to help them out. It used to have more of a Hobbit theme, but the company that bought it did not want to pay the licensing fees to use Hobbit names and characters, so they changed things.

It’s fun to play just to relax.

I got the Texas Instruments NSpire app for free.

Cool in concept, but generally I just use my Casio 991EX for calcs, or specialized software if it’s any more advanced.

but more and more forums are either switching to Discourse or just shutting down and migrating to social media.

I hope that does not happen here. I got off Social Media a while back, over a year. I told my Wife nothing good really comes from Social Media, just potential bad. She still choses to be on it, everyone has a choice.

To the question;

BOOM BEACH it's technically free, but it can be pay to advance.

Pixelmator Photo (ridiculous cheap) - probably the most underated photo app on iPad&iPhone -, Snapseed (free) - though an update by Google to adapt to support some basic newer functionality on iPadOS 13/14.x is long overdue.
Fontcase (free) to install whatever font on iPadOS.
Carnets (free) - free full python programming on iPad.
Filebrowser for Business (worth every penny) - the filebrowser Apple which does everything right Apple’s Files app get wrong (reliable copying to and from external drives, mounting any SMB drive, using external directly media without data loss or media destruction, &&&)
King of the opera (free) - 4 people, 1 iPad, silly fun. ?

I use Concepts a lot for sketching and note taking. It supports layers and has a variety of pens and pen styles.

I also use Keynote frequently just to quickly mash up some drawing shapes and a photograph or screen capture.

Proseezion is a great tool for getting the best possible photo of still life (machine parts, rocks, tools, scenery).

PDF Expert for PDFs

Bluetooth BLE Device Finder Very cool app that lists all the BT devices nearby. Does a good job of naming them. Handy to try to find a missing gadget as it tells you the approximate distance. Unfortunately, it can’t wake up the Pencil so I stomp around and rattle the furniture to try to wake it up in case it is under a cushion or blanket.

Touchdraw sounds interesting.

I’ve been back and forth to purchase the pixelmator photo app. I’m looking forward to use its batch photo editing functionality. Snapseed has been great on my iphone, but for the iPad usage it’s not supporting mouse gesture. Do pixelmator supports swiping with the magic mouse?

I have both Concepts and TouchDraw (I love drawing apps...) and they definitely have different strengths. Concepts is much better as a technical pad, drawing using the Pencil and giving you loads of options. TouchDraw is a simpler tool, and more about drawing specific shapes than free-hand. This is one of the things that makes it super-fast to use for simple ‘box and line’ diagrams of the kind people usually draw on white-boards in meetings. You can draw a box, drag to size then label it in seconds, and link them with dynamic lines so you can shuffle them around as the diagram evolves.

I remember the app from the earlier days of iOS. Nice that it’s still around.

How does the journaling work out? Does it recognize handwriting and turn it into searchable text?

Paper is mainly a sketching app, so no - it does not have some of the typical functionalities that one would expect from a note taking app (like p.e. handwriting recognition and text conversion).

The app "Nebo" can do that. It has excellent recognition as well. In my opinion, the Notes app pencil use is pale in comparison.

Thanks, that’s what I’m using for most longer text entry with the pencil. Nebo is pretty awesome, and after longer writing sessions I can share the text straight to my journaling app Day One - another one of those great apps that are around for ages already.

Have you thought about using Nebo as your journal instead of paying for Day One?

Thought about it, but Day One excels at its core function and is really nice to go through memories and what not - plus as an early customer I get the current paid functionality mostly free - just awesome.
