A lot of this thread is just things people are tired of seeing. Of course, there are very good reasons to use the same typefaces over and over for things like word processing or the Web: choose something outside the standard set and it won't look right on other people's computers. A standard set is a Good Thing and very useful.

I suppose you are still allowed to use Verdana. No one mentioned it yet, so I guess it's still acceptable even though it has a pretty high big'n'ugly factor.

God forbid a designer go and find a new font! We can't have anything getting original now can we! :p

Nice thread, it's good to see someone mention Zapf Chancery - one of my pet hates - normally used with caps lock on - shudder!
I don't Avant Garde hasn't been mentioned yet.

I completely hate everything that comes preinstalled with the windows pcs and the macs.

Arial, Impact, eurostile....or any other free font.

The good stuff is ar fontshop.de and veer!!!

As to Helvetica being a boring and bad font.....it is kinda true. Helvetica Neue on the other hand is a beautiful typeface that can truly look great in the hands of a trained professional.

The narrow Arial variant is pretty horrible (well, Arial in general is horrible, but you get the point).

I love Helvetica *ducks, runs*. It's just clean.

any typeface can look bad if used improperly. any typeface can look good when used properly, EVEN comic sans (tho there may be a heck of a lot less times comic sans should be used compared to a classic like Akzidenz Grotesk or Futura, but you get the point)

personally, i stay away from all the Emigré faces - i just find them to be way to goofy and contrived to use for anything but the very occasional large size and small character count uses like titles and such.

my favorites are Sabon and Interstate, specifically a combination of Interstate small caps with Sabon body text.

The Matrix Font (please no more student films with that font)

Papyrus, every wannabe designer uses it, I HATE IT it's worse than a virus.

OK here is a good one with a good story. The font I have hated forever is Hobo...look it up...its another one that is everywhere and is aweful. Here is the story: as a kid in school, all the teachers used this thing that cut letters out of paper to put on their bulletin boards and the only font they had was...you guessed it - Hobo. So these teachers would spell things out and ALWAYS make the A backwards or the O or E upsidedown and it drove me crazy. I was a geek back then and noticed that stuff, but I have hated it ever since.

I hate ketchup, or is it cachupe, what ever. I used to like Harrington, but im not to fond of it now

I like comic too, i use it for messenger!
There is a doggie daycare place nearby that uses it on the front sign. For that, it seems appropriate.

I don't really hate fonts, its how're they're misused that creates the problem. Even in the Death To Comic Sans website they show one example of proper or allowable use.

Sort of like "Fonts aren't bad, people using them incorrectly can be misguided..."
