Well I'm only about 7 months into my current phone (an LG V30) so I don't have any immediate plans to upgrade. Lately though it's been fairly unreliable with apps in the background crashing for no reason, spotty Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and other little bugs like the fingerprint scanner acting up. It's a shame because it's a fine phone otherwise (with awesome audio hardware!), and I've actually been using my old 6S more often ever since I upgraded it to iOS 12. In retrospect I probably should've held off on upgrading and thought it through some more.

However, the Xr really catches my eye and I've been waiting for Apple to do a brightly colored iPhone again since the days of the 5c. The stupid notch and the lack of a headphone jack still kinda hold me back though, and it's a shame that Apple's being stubborn with the latter since most Android phones proudly hang onto it.

My next device err well purchase might be for my mom as a note 5 (at&t) replacement. Waiting to see what the OnePlus 6t might have. Or just order a OnePlus 6 for her.

That blasted note 5 seems to be going strong for her it just too high maintenance imho with all the bloat and apps she doesn't need.

Or maybe a pixel 3 since it should have all bands and maybe we can get her on fi for what she needs and dump the carrier.

OnePlus 6T for me. OLED screen, teardrop notch, minimal bezels, in-display fingerprint sensor, SD card slot, snapdragon 845, and cheaper than the iPhone XR - if the rumours are to be believed, it’ll be unbeatable. Not long to wait now!

Only the OnePlus X did, but yeah, the rest don't have it.
Basically the OnePlus fanboys start daydreaming because the Pocophone F1 does have SD card slot for less money than the OnePlus 6.

Next thing they dream about is wireless charging.

You’re right. I’ve been researching so much I mixed it up with many others - most that have 2 sims can use the 2nd sim slot as an SD slot instead. It doesn’t bother me too much anyway, 128gb is enough for me.

I’ve been watching the OnePlus prices slowly steadily creep upward. Each time the reviewers say “Oh but that’s great look what you now get for your extra $50.” I can’t help but wonder how long before they do like Huawei and spring the >$1000 phones on everyone.

I hope that doesn’t happen anytime soon. But as long as customers and reviewers keep saying “Oh it’s great, BUT...it needs ip67 or SD storage or....” the prices will creep up as more items on the wishlists get fulfilled.

For now they occupy an interesting niche. They’re starting to nip at Samsung’s heels pretty well right where they are. It’s fun to watch.

For me, now my next device will be whatever doesn’t land me in the hospital. I’m not going to go into much detail anywhere else on the forum, this is amongst you all here because you know I love both platforms and am not an Apple basher, whereas that may not be as apparent to the forum at large. But whatever the hell is up with the X/XS/Max display had a sneaky insidious effect on my nervous system.

I was fine and then I wasn’t and am still having some problems with my speech and balance. I have been sick with migraine symptoms like this before, so I’m not worried about something exotic. But it’s not been like this since my doc took months to get me diagnosed and stabilized, which was before I joined this forum.

Snowball the Pixel 2 gives me serious eye strain but doesn’t make me that sick. I do VR on the Samsung and don’t get sick at all. Seriously, what the fudge brownie. I don’t know if pwm alone can do that or if it’s pwm combined with Face ID scanning or what.

Anyway, whatever I play around with next needs to offer a solid return policy and a customer service format that’s not hard to access. Because I can no longer take it for granted that I can safely use any phone that strikes my fancy.

I’m going to go less expensive than originally planned on the iOS side with the Xr. That’s got me thinking of maybe giving up the hyper expensive flagships on the Android side since my S9+ still fills that role and likely will suffice for another year. For me it’s that danged good and the only thing missing is a wide angle lens and S-pen. Which I can honestly live without. That’s just icing on the cake stuff.

Maybe when I’m ready to try a new Android again it’s time for me to take a look at the mid level options. If there’s one thing the tangles with the Note 9 preorder annoyances, bad S8+ customer service issues, and the iPhone Max and connectivity issues and migraines have taught me: I can’t assume I can throw a thousand dollars at a phone and expect to have a good time anymore.

Where I prioritized the experience has traditionally been the camera. But now I’m seeing even the flagships can give wonky results in some situations that my HTC 10 from a couple years back can still get pretty well.

Lol, but if anything can weaken my desire to explore the mid level side of life, it’s the leaked descriptions of the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. Talk about sharks with lasers! Drool!

As OnePlus prices creep up to flagship levels, another company will take their place as an amazingly cheap flagship killer - Pocofone is one to watch. I’m happy paying midrange prices for flagship specs for now.

I’m interested in the next Nokia 7 Plus refresh (7.1 if rumors are to be believed). I had a couple of OnePlus phones over a year ago, but it will be a long while before I’m letting a Chinese Android distro anywhere near my data again. I’m just a little bit worried if Bluetooth is going to be flaky on the Nokia if I end up getting one.

There are good reasons to worry about Chinese data leaks, but are they any worse than the CIA or GCHQ?

I read the two comments on security concerns about Chinese phones and I honestly don’t know how to respond. My husband’s P20 Pro generally outperforms his new iPhone Max as a camera and a phone. Though he says he still likes iOS better and the new series 4 watch will keep him hooked on the iPhone.

Unlike me he boldly quit iMessages and made the P20 Pro his daily driver for two months. That was not without problems though and there were a few times the only way to reach our teenager was via my iPhone sending iMessages to her iPad. (She prefers to use her iPad and forgets to charge her phone.)

It’s a shame we US consumers can’t safely and freely welcome this competition, for it would likely force Apple to stay hungry and more customer focused. I don’t know what his phone is betraying to China. Don’t anyone think I’m not a little antsy about it, though. So far, there’s no apparent evidence it’s doing anything. This was the phone the Huawei CEO had hoped to win over the American public with so it’s likely he withheld any shenanigans on it, but I don’t know.

Somewhere between 0 and 1
iPhone(insert postfix here), 2019 one.

Still do not have idea what it will be called, currently I love the X, and these new iPhones are too trivial in updates for me to spend $1000 again.

Well, they don’t always have to pull any active shenadigans to do some harm. The thing that was the last straw for me regarding OnePlus phones was that they were advertising a secure folder feature that would encrypt your sensitive data. In reality this ”encryption” was renaming the files to a cryptic format but keeping the contents as-is and hiding the folder from the stock file manager (but naturally and of the numerous 3rd party files managers would show those files just fine) unless you authenticated with your fingerprint.

They were called out on this, but the bug report was closed as ”works as designed”. That was the absolutely last straw for me, because either they are employing drunken retarded chimpanzees for their security feature design or they just want to do the minimum possible effort to give the impression that they care about security. However, by pushing such a fatally flawed ”feature” to their customers they are actually inviting their customers to put their data to risk while being under the impression that it’s encrypted in at least some manner. They would’ve been better off by not offering the feature at all, since there are apps that can create encrypted vaults that are actually encrypted. But I don’t know, maybe it’s a cultural thing to care more about what you appear to be doing instead of what you’re actually doing and whether you’re doing it well or at least giving it your best effort.

Hard to get? Hasn’t nano been the default size also in iPhones for how many years now?
I think in this case the nano sim refers to the new strorage card size. Yeah a whole new size for storage just in case we don’t deal with enough fragmentation in standards as it is.

Ah I see, now I found out about what they’ve done there. I’m still trying to figure out why they didn’t use a hybrid nano-SIM/microSD slot for the second SIM like many other manufacturers.

It is a big letdown by the carriers last year when Huawei was about to be expanded into US market. Uncle Sam does not like the connection with Huawei CEO who has the colonel rank in the PLA with the Chinese government. The processor of Huawei phone is own home grown, that is what made the Uncle nervous.
Yet there is hope this year with Tmobile bringing Oneplus 6T into US market, It is going to challenge the so called flagship devices. With Oneplus 6T (minus wireless charging and waterproof), still compensate with powerful battery and on screen fingerprint sign in. Price wise the OnePlus model will be around $700 with 8GB ram 256GB HD. It is going to attract lots of customers, if not already done so. Imagine $700 device vs over $1000 one, how good can the higher price device can be. It is going to make coffee and do leg message? I doubt so.
Interesting part is the major components of the Oneplus is screen display by Samsung, Camera by Sony, processor by Qualcomm.
I do not work for Oneplus yet the reality is sinking in, there ought to be more players in the market to turn the tide of those over priced devices.

I've heard ramblings of a Razer phone 2 in the works as well.

Is anyone else getting phone burnout? I mean between the lackluster updates, pointless miniscule refinements and constant churning out basically the same thing over and over again with higher prices (planned obsolescence).

I mean the market is just completely oversaturated right now with nothing new.

In the pipeline:
10gb of ram?
5g?
Notchless displays?
In display fingerprint scanner?
Folding displays?
Adjustable background blur?
1200 dollar devices?
4+ cameras?

Pffft :rolleyes::(

Not sure where phones can go from here...
Feel the same. Only phone that interests me is the Note 9 and that’s due to currently being on iOS and the Note 9 just being a completely different experience. I had it for two weeks and am strongly considering going back to it. That said if I had the Note 8 I have a feeling I’d feel the same as I do with my iPhone X. Just no reason for me to upgrade to an Xs Xr or any other iOS device.

That in itself is a reason that I’m starting to think that one of the iPhones major advantages is the ~5 year software updates. As phones get more expensive and the value proposition decreases then getting new software updates will become the “new phone”. Many of us hardcore phone lovers are starting to question the yearly upgrade and, to your point, what is in the pipeline that might change that?

Only thing I see myself doing is buying a iOS/Android flagship, keeping it for 2 years, then possibly switching platforms when I’m bored.

I'm all over the place.

Almost want to just order the Note 9, but the Mi Mix 3, Mate 20 Pro, and 6T are right around the corner.

The Note 9 is highly probable, tho, because I've never owned a Galaxy phone and that S Pen is super alluring.

Holding out until the note 10 and hoping for the best. Note 9 is 90% there for me, and since I’m not due for an upgrade until next year, I’m hoping the wait will pay off

Completely hypothetical Face ID style 4.7/SE successor.

I.e. a phone with a smaller body yet bigger screen than the current 4.7 inch screen iPhones.

So an iPhone XR ‘mini’.
