I just realized the phone I'd replace this Notw with in an instant. Microsoft's Andromeda device.

Except it doesn’t sound like Andromeda is actually a smartphone, put rather a ultra portable mini tablet—a “pocketable Surface”, according to Panos Panay’s interview with the Verge.

They can call it whatever they want. If it is a mobile device that makes calls, people are going to call it a phone. I mean, smartphones are basically mini tablets that make calls nowadays anyway.

Understood. It’s just that the little I’ve read about it implies Microsoft doesn’t intend to put a cellular modem in it. Making it a smartphone adds an entire slew of new complications that it sounds like Microsoft is trying to avoid (additional hardware, licensure/certifications, and smartphone software—re: App Store).

They're pushing the "always connected PC" thing and it would likely run Windows in S mode. You may be right, but just making a mini tablet isn't redefining a category. As they put it, they want to blur the line between mobile and PC.

i replace devices when they die or there is a significant upgrade. typically that's a skip of 2 or more generations.

currently using an iphone 7, it works fine.
currently using a cracked watch s2, due for replacement towards end of the year
currently using a 2015 retina 13" pro, due for replacement when i'm confident the new 2018 machines aren't crap

etc.

I haven't used the butterfly keyboard much at all but i'm more concerned with reliability. Jury still out as far as i'm concerned.

Well for me the biggest problem with the butterfly keyboard is reliability. Not a fan of the typing feel, but I guess I’d get used to that.

Any place but here or there....
Hanging in with 7+, if Essential hung in there and promised a second phone, I would have purchased immediately.

The other problem is, I am on Verizon and staying put for now (haven’t had luck with T Mobile and AT&T is a big old no after they ripped me off on trade in).

No way will I get a phone that has PWM issues (sorry the Max is giving you headaches. @GrumpyMom), nor will I pay upwards of $1k for a phone again. So that leaves me with Pixel, Samsung or Moto or the iPhone XR, I guess.

Anything below 500€. Thats my max. Will probably buy a midrange phone or old flagship. They just keep getting better and I dont need 8GB RAM and such on a phone, plus I think flagship prices are getting REALLY REALLY out of hand. I love tech and phones, but im not crazy enough to spend 1000€ on one. Phone prices drop really fast, and I can easily wait months for prices to reach what I consider acceptable.

Phones got boring after the 2012 Galaxy Note II as they're basically catching up to or rehashing that pen phablet. Waiting for integration of truly new productive features. A Galaxy Note with Windows 10 on ARM and Linux DeX would be ideal or even a ChromeOS Pixel 3 Ultra that transforms to a proper desktop productivity environment. Maybe the Surface Phone will surprise too. Anything but a jumbo iPod.

The smaller Pixel 3 in Clearly White. Really don't like the Pixel 3 XL - especially the notch. After owning the iPhone X and currently owning the Essential Phone, the notch normally isn't a big deal for me, however, the Pixel 3 XL is another story. I just can't do it. I accidentally shattered the display on my Essential yesterday, so I figured why not grab the Pixel 3.
