Doesn’t bother me at all. Would I prefer there was no notch? Sure. But it sits in the menu bar and doesn’t get in the way for me, and largely I forget it’s even there.

I still hate the notch. I refuse to buy a Mac with that degraded feature. My LCDs are all perfect rectangles, no more discussion.
However, if they implement it more like the dynamic island- then maybe it'll be more tempting.

And for those saying it gives more real estate, there was already an option to hide the top menu bar. If people are really that concerned with more screen space, then maybe we need to return to the iSight as an external device.

I hate notch so much I switch to use iPad full time. Now I feel less and less needed for a higher end iPhone especially since camera shows no materialised improvements (you can’t fit DSLR lenses in that space. It’s physics), notched or not. While iPad allows me to enjoy full screen content with No cutout and higher frame rate on games. (iPhone can never reach the same sustained performance because of Apple’s thermals, unless they change it)

Needless to say, should I get my MacBook upgraded to a 14” model or sth, I will definitely use tools to avoid The notch entirely, assuming Apple doesn’t ban those apps from running in macOS.

Do you use Bartender? When I started using iStatmenus, well before the new MacBook Pros with notch came out, I immediately ran out of space for menubar icons. I found Bartender and it brought order to that big pile of icons. Now, most menubar icons are hidden and only appear when I click on the Bartender "..." icon. Only the ones that need quick and/or continual glancing are granted top level status.
Hidden Bar is free and does the same thing. But unlike Bartender, it does basically one that one thing. It’s good though.

But now you have more real estate with the menu bar. Display space is no real argument.

More display space with sacrifice?
But I agree there is no argument on that one because it’s objectively more space, just each one sees the extra space differently.

I can't fit everything into the menu bar that I used to on my 13" MacBook. I don't care about how it looks, but the space it eats up for menu bar icons is irritating.
You need Bartender (or one of the clones) to get a handle on the menu bar icons

There is always a design choice Apple makes for people to hate on. What I don't understand is why they got rid of the notch on the iPhone?

Dynamic island is a nice Feature but the pill shaped hole cut out is an eyesore worse than a notch and it literally doesn't give any extra screen that is useful on the phone.

So I guess going forward we are going to see the same pill cut out on the newer Macs? Or will we only have notches on laptops?

From a continuity perspective it doesn't make much sense. Newest MacBook is M2 Air and it has a notch while newest iPhone doesn't. Newest iPads have no notch.

It just seems odd to me. We will see what happens next year but I can't imagine that new MacBook will eliminate the notch or we will have one generation of notebooks with a notch?

From a design perspective I would like to see no notch but I don't want a pill cutout either. If we are going to have cameras integrated into the screen and not the laptop bezel then I prefer the notch.

Overall, I agree with others the notch doesn’t bother me. When I’m using my MBP “like a laptop”, the notch pretty much disappears unless I choose to look at it. Granted, about half the time, I’m using it in closed clamshell mode into a large external monitor, so that may be a factor in my lack of caring about it.

That being said, I thought the below post was interesting. I had also had some of these thoughts too - particularly that now that the iPhone is moving away from the notch with 14 Pro / Dynamic Island, the notch is already becoming “older” tech for Apple. Now until MBP does the same dynamic island (if they do at all), yes the “newest / best” MBP will have a notch, so different enough. But it will be weird to think it would “look old” pretty quickly, if the MBP changes to pill & cutout / Dynamic Island in the near future.

As an MBP owner, I hope they don’t make our generation look “dated” by removing the notch so soon. My gut says they won’t and the notch will stay the MBP design language for awhile (I assume it’ll take some time for the tech to mature anyways given it’s harder in a thin laptop screen vs a thicker iPad).

The question is, on the next big MBP re-design (would expect 2024 at earliest), will it remove the notch (so truly only the 2021-2023 generation will have had a notch), or do 1 more generation with it? The iPhones had a notch for quite a while (4 years, 2018 / iPhone X until 2022 iPhone 14 Pro). I would think they’ll make the decision then depending on what’s possible with tech at that point in time.

Camouflaged but still there. Dynamic island has to be a useful functioning function and I underline useful to compensate
Hopefully in the coming months we’ll see live updates
I would rather see an under screen camera and eliminating the notch

that extra space could have been there too, if there was no notch.
but of course it's only there, to compensate a bit for the space that would otherwise had bern lost

As far as aesthetics go, I really don’t like the shape and the width of the notch. But of course I don’t even notice it with my everyday use.

It did bother me, especially as I am on a managed work computer, with a lot of mandatory menulings which take up space in addition to the ones I use myself. I fixed the problem by installing Hidden Bar :).

A remaining issue for me is that the Window menu is flowed to the right of the notch in some applications. This is semi-confusing.

Been using a MacBook Pro 16” with notch daily since January and am very okay with it. Like with my iPhone, I stopped noticing it after a week or so. My only complaint is I’d like them to throw a better camera in there (face ID please) given that it takes up a not-insignificant amount of real estate. At least we don’t have a camera bump, right? ;)

The notch is a non-issue. If you want the old look that replaces notch with a bezel just go full screen. The notch was somewhat of a fabricated controversy hyped up by tech YouTubers who desperately needed content and engagement.

Hi, I'm interested in the app that was mentioned several times for managing apps in the menu bar, but when i search for 'bartender' on the app store, there is an 'iBar', 'barbee', and 'ByeBar' but the other bartender apps are drink recipes?

i'd gladly trade a 720p camera for a notchless experience, if that truly is the issue that 1080p can't be had notchless.
I'd just get rid of the camera totally now that we can use our smartphones as a camera. I actually haven't used the camera on my 16" M1, so I'd imagine losing it wouldn't cause an issue... for me. BUT, Apple won't do that, too many people do need a camera that's not just for Apple software.

I never notice the notch though as I don't have many menu bar items and I use a black background, plus I like the extra space it brings.
