I never skiied Canaan, but have 1) raced motorcycles there in the old Blackwater 100 and 2) dove there. Did my Advanced Open Water while my wife got her basic Open Water.
If I had not married a gal who on my first date told me she did not like West Va (I asked her), I might be living there or close by, say Southern Virginia. My fantasy was to always be in such an environment, despite the economic challenges. My brother feels the same way, but he moved to Alaska for a more rustic effect.

Somethings if you prefer not having to buy them again, can be easily saved. :) Potted plants are the easiest. I put 3 freeze bags over schrubs, the leaves are dead, but I’m curious to see if the stems survived..
I had a small lemon tree/shrub (5ft tall) in my back yard that I wrapped in an two layers of bedsheets and a outer layer of plastic tarp. It died in the 2021 cold snap.😭

Any plant I want to keep alive has to be potted or be hardy enough to survive unprotected. I have a couple of peach trees that laughed off past few cold spells we've had.🤗 I still wrap them for peace of mind.

My last lemon tree died in 2021. It was in a large pot. Last year I wrapped the tree in a tent like structure using the top of an old sun umbrella, an old car cover, and put a heat lamp in the pot during the freezing period. That worked. This year I placed it in a small10’x10’ shed and some other freeze sensitive plants with the heat lamp and that worked too. 🙂

A 1-day snow holiday was declared throughout the country except for one city. The average temperature of the entire country is -3 degrees Celsius. The city I live in has a temperature of 2 degrees, it is on the Mediterranean coast, and it is suitable for snowfall, but due to the low altitude, the snow melts and turns into water before it reaches the ground. That's why a holiday was declared in my city because there was heavy rain

I have been watching numerous videos of the record snowfalls in the Northern Regions of Japan. It seems amazing, but in some areas of Alaska we receive over 140-inches of snow. For example, in Valdez, Alaska.

Much depends on what your area is used to… Population of Valdez?🤔 My brother lives near Kenai, told me his show falls were low and a relative warm winter.

Yes, Valdez is a very small town. It just happens that it snows quite a lot, but at least it's not the same every year. Somewhere in the late '90s Valdez received 12-feet of snow. Around Fairbanks 3-4 feet of snow for the entire winter are most common. I have about 2 or more feet of snow in my backyard, but we go without snow for several days and some of it evaporates (the air is very dry). This winter it hasn't been very cold. The forecast for tonight shows -12 ºF, which is not bad at all.

My home state and surrounding states are getting crushed right now with rain. When the term catastrophic is used by the NWS, then you know it's bad.

Prayers for those affected. I have been through several southern WV floods and wouldn't wish it on anyone.

West Va, flooding? 😕 I’m a bit out of touch…

Massive amounts of snow here, up to 5 feet, 6-7 feet included with snowdrift. Worst winter in many years here. Most snow I've ever seen.

It's bad. Normally when southern WV floods, it is because a thunderstorm "trained" and area and dumped 4-6" in a short period of time, but limited to a narrow band. But this time, it wasn't a narrow band, it was a very large storm which dumped 4+" over a large area of already saturated ground from almost a foot of snow.

Several towns either set all time or 2nd all-time water crests. It was so bad that my mom's hometown was on the local news here in Phoenix.

To make matters worse, just as they are starting to clean up, another 4-8" of snow is hitting the ground through tomorrow.

Last night the temperature dropped 26 Fahrenheit here in Houston, plenty cold to kill, tropical and semi tropical plants. I got mine corralled in the shed with a heat lamp. And it’s supposed to go down to 29 tonight. My guess is this is the last hurrah for winter in the Houston area.

Yes, and heat lamp could work. But it is best to also use a small floor fan to move the warm air inside the enclosure, because heat rises and concentrates at the top or ceiling.

That’s a good idea, although the heat lamp did work about a month ago when it got down to 24F and stayed below freezing for 24 hrs.

I was thinking that by virtue of the lamp heating the air, some air circulation would occur, but not nearly as much as a fan.
Yes, a fan would move the air around the enclosure. I remember watching a movie titled, "Walk In The Clouds" where a farmer lit fires and fanned (by hand) the heat from the fires toward the grapevines to keep them warm through the cold night.
