I'm not sure why people started thinking this makes it a true laptop replacement.

This has been Apple marketing slogan ever since iOS 9 introduced SplitView/SlideOver, and for some it can be a laptop replacement. It has been a laptop replacement for me, I use a iMac when I’m stationary... but for mobility computing... I use my iPad Pro.

With iOS 10... Apple targeted the iPhone with iMessage features and 3D Touch improvements. But with this new multitask that Apple has introduce in iOS 11... this will fuel the fire even more and I’m sure Apple will market heavily toward the iPad being a laptop replacement.

I think the new dock is nice and drag and drop may be better but it really isn't that much different than sliding from the right side. I'm not sure why people started thinking this makes it a true laptop replacement. The only true difference is that the two apps you previously had open can be open back up together.
Moving files around from one app to another really bolsters productivity. It saves you about 5 disjoint steps from the current scenario. The file manager is another key feature. Now you can drop all your files into one directory and all apps can access this directly. This means you won't have to copy the files onto each app. This again, is a huge boost.

Got a 12.9” iPad Pro instead of a new MacBook Pro. Even with iOS 11 Beta installed: not a MBP replacement...

Downloaded a zip file to my iCloud Drive. Can’t unzip multiple files easily: SUCKS.

So I went to my old and slow MacBook Pro, opende my iCloud Drive, unzipped the files and returned to my iPad.

Or am I missing something?

I had actually put away my 13 inch pro because iOS 10 just wasn’t enough, and I was using my 9.7 inch more. But with iOS 11 I have not only started using the 1e inch again, it is actually my go to device for work over my MacBook Pro. Besides beta issues like freezing, I am able to get serious productivity work done. It’s still no computer OS and I would never begin to compare it to a surface pro or MacBook Pro, but for light working like email, calendar, document creation and sharing, and note taking it is a breeze and very delightful.

Need...Multiple...Instances of an app.. like MS Word.

Only gripe for me now. But then there is a work around for this.

Definitely not a laptop replacement. But if you have a laptop, it is a good alternative for portability.

But then again it depends on what you're trying to do. I use mine to study for a certificate and it's a perfect tool for my use.

My setup: Split screen Safari and Onenote and a floating video for lecture is a perfect set up for me. (I take note using Apple Pencil, of course)

Loving iOS 11 on my iPad Pro. I can see myself using it more now. It's nice to have some additional features that take advantage of the bigger screen. I think this is a step in the right direction.

You mentioned you can't unzip multiple files. Are you able to unzip one file at a time?

No support from 3rd party developers?? Not sure why would you think that.

Even Readdle apps have drag and drop support. And now that’s it’s system wide... Readdle can now support more apps and not just their apps. So, you shouldn’t be worried if their would be developers supporting drag and drop, when iOS 11 officially drops we will see plenty of developers release apps supporting this drag and drop feature.

ah yes, Readdle supports drag and drop inside the app but not outside of the app. The issue is inside vs outside the app. They are actually not the offenders. There are lots of apps that still cannot allow for split screen usage. I just picked up Affinity Photo for iOS and that doesn't support split screen usage yet on iOS 10. It would be super useful if I could use Affinity Photo with Safari or with Photos instead of going through the whole importation business or switching to Photoshop Mix to get different layers going. My concern is not with no support from 3rd party developers but rather not enough support from enough 3rd party developers. The reason why x86 is still dominant is party due to the fact that you can't multitask as effectively with iOS yet. IOS 11 is a step towards the right direction but until Apple gives the ultimatum that all 3rd party developers need to support split screen functionality, we aren't going to get that type of multitasking.

Well, gradually developers will support it. It won’t be as quickly as users will prefer, but I’m confident that we will get plenty of support.

iPad platform has been well supported from developers.

iOS 11 may not be a big update on the phone, but it's a fantastic update for the iPad. I already used my iPad Pro a lot, and now I use it even more with this first beta.

I am not upgrading to iOS 11, i am afraid it will slow down my Old iPhones/iPads [planned obsolescence] and there is nothing promising in iOS 11,No MAJOR OVERHAUL, No "DARK MODE" which i was accepting big time,Seems like it's just another bug fix update with some improved features which we get every month

Another bug fix update? Planned Obsolescence? Not even close. Apple did A good job with iOS 11 with both the iPhone and iPad.

Because the way I see it, there was loads of content revamped that looks promising contrary to what you say :
  1. Revamped Siri
  2. All new files application
  3. Apple Pay transfer money
  4. Camera has been updated to HVEC
  5. New App Store
  6. Updated Apple Maps
  7. Do Not Disturb Driving Mode
  8. Redesigned Control Center
  9. Screen recording
  10. New Keyboard
  11. Wifi sharing
  12. Home Kit update
  13. AR Kit

My biggest disappointment is the inclusion of iPad mini 2, 3 and the original air for this update. Clearly these devices are past their usefulness and if apple were brave enough to pass support for these it would have a significant impact on increasing sales. A missed opportunity to cut the dead wood away and increase revenue!

Of course it is :)

I'm actually really pleased that support is still present for the A7 containing devices. If ios10 is anything to go by, I'm sure the public release of ios11 will run good on these older machines.

I feel as if I have already been able to do some major work on my 12.9'' iPad Pro when I am away from my MBP. iOS 11 is going to take it to a whole other level. I am super pumped for all of these multitasking features.

I’m running it on my 12.9 iPP and love it. The only extra thing that I want (which may come in later betas or iOS 12) would be to be able to view and copy files to and from SD cards and USBs with the camera kit in the Files app.

I am thinking that the Files app is currently a very early build and they will be adding functionality throughout the beta period. I am looking forward to seeing what it is capable of. Does that mean that Safari has a download manager now? Is it possible to download any file to the app?

Still no calculator, lol.
They probably don't want Tim to verify the Sales numbers.

Meh.

Don’t see the need for a default calculator app for the iPad. Heck, I don’t even use the default calculator app on the iPhone. I have combination of calculator apps from PCalc, Tydiig and Soulver that does the job.

I’m hoping that they fix the widget section in iOS 11 and go back to the 2 column instead of 1 column.

Weird. On iOS beta 1 with iPad Pro 9.7 inch.
Cannot get split screen hey work with any apps.
Drag the icon to the side and the screen starts to split, the icon expands...but when I release it, it just disappears.

Any ideas?

It's hit or miss on my iPad Air 2. Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't.

Are you sure the apps are split screen capable? Try it a few times with Apple Mail and Safari and see if that works reliably.
