More weblog-specific:
  1. Ecto editor - for writing
  2. Cyberduck ftp - for uploading
In general:
  • Most of the apple apps: mail, iphoto, itunes, not safari
  • Quicksilver
  • Firefox — sadly still the most complete browser (minus the speed of Safari/Camino) on the Mac, but it will rock with version 3's cocoa-support!

Parallels
BBEdit
Quicksilver
Billings
Transmit

Just purchased Synergy after checking it out as a result of this thread, and I think that deserves a place on the list too!

In no particular order:

  • iTunes
  • Textmate
  • DEVONThink
  • Adium
  • Pathfinder

When it comes to browsers, I just can't decide between Safari, Shiira, and Camino. However, I don't consider these browsers as "killer apps" - except maybe Firefox v3 with Cocoa Support, or Shiira v2 ;)

Safari - Tried them all and stuck with Safari
iTunes - Added SizzlingKeys and now it is even better
Mail - Tried Thunderbird, but just loved the simplicity of Mail
VLC - One of my favourite programs on any OS
Adium X - Reminds me a lot of Trillian, just prettier

I also use other programs which I love such as Colloquy, iCal, Transmission, MS Office, iWork, iPhoto, Handbrake and iSquint.

1. Your Mac will come with Preview, iPhoto, and depending on the model, GraphicConverter.

2. OS X comes with its own Unix Terminal

3. Safari

4. Mail.app

5. iChat

Doesn't look like you'll need to spend any more money.

Safari (with inquisitor plug in)
iTunes
Adium (but I use Mercury messenger for AV)
Parallels
NeoOffice

These are all great, but I found QuickShareIt today, and it could get up there soon...

The first five apps I download:
  1. Adium X
  2. Camino
  3. NewsFire
  4. Textmate
  5. Transmit

Another vote for Adium. Amazing chat client that I use to connect with friends on ICQ and AIM. Extremely customizable and easy to use.

If I were to put the five I use the most, they are as follows:

1. Firefox (intel optimized)
2. Adium X
3. Newsfire
4. iTunes
5. Xtorrent

Quicksilver is also on there, but isn't quite an app like the others. I use it extensively, though.

Your Top 5 Killer Mac Apps?

Awright... I have looked through everyone responses to this "challenge". Seems that there are a lot of apps and utilities selected here which have to do with communication (email, chat), format compatibility (various a/v formats an protocol online), browsers, music, video/movies.
If I may, I'd to see what folks here consider as a good graphic illustration program (vector & bit map) - something on the order of CorelDraw in Win, and also a good primary image viewing/processing program (something like the simple MS PhotoEditor under Win - allows extensive color manipulations, + resizing bit limiting pixels and applying compression - something iPhoto does not allowextensively). Sorry for bringing up Win progs - that's where I come from.
I'll appreciate!

Adobe Illustrator and Apple Aperture? Unless I misunderstood what you are after.

As for my top five :

1. Final Cut Studio (yeah its more than one application but I'm a cheat :))
2. AdiumX
3. iTunes (my computer is never on without this running)
4. Max (the most useful audio converting tool I have found so far)
5. Unison (usenet with a pretty interface).

I'm not going to include stuff I use on a daily basis like Mail, Safari, etc. My top five in no real order:

Transmission - awesome torrent app
Audio Hijack - great app for ripping audio from various programs
Safari - a powerful browser that gets even cooler with Inquisitor
iTunes - the best music player available
Dashboard - didn't see too many people who listed this, but I use dashboard for calendars, weather, system stats, a sleep timer, a guitar chord finder, and so on.
