This is a huge disappointment. I’m not saying videos look terrible in 1080p, but we deserve better.

iPad Pro (11”) resolution is 2388 × 1668, yet YouTube videos played on it lack the 1440p (or higher) clarity you get on a Windows PC. Instead, its max resolution is many generations old.

For the price Apple charges for their best tablet of all time, it needs to support the highest resolutions on the most popular video App....

This is just the consequence of the war between apple and google. Everybody knows that if you want higher resolution than 1080p in Mac or iOS you need to install a different browser, chrome, firefox, brave, etc as Safari and youtube app don't allow anything higher than fullHD.

In my case I'm always swapping between Firefox and safari depending on what I want

It’s annoying that neither my iPhone XS Max, iPad Pro 10.5 or iPad mini 4 will play any videos higher than 1080p. I think it’s google limiting the playback resolution rather than Apple.

No it's not, it's all about codec used by different companies. Youtube uses VP9 which is not suportted by apple yet.

Equally as annoying, YouTube still hasn't fixed the default (Auto) resolution bug. It ALWAYS defaults to 480p and you need to manually set 1080p, every single time. At least they fixed the black bars though but most other apps still have the black bars in landscape mode, which is kind of disappointing after this many months. I remember it took most apps over a year to support the 10.5 pro's new resolution so I am not overly optimistic.

youtube looks horrible on my 11" Ipad Pro and to me on the 12.9 it looks even worse. very sad

I never noticed its that bad. What is important is that it can chromecast in 4k. You can't see all the pixels unless its on a bigger external display.

I have a 57mbps/21mbps connection at home & it still defaults to 480p...

I'm maxed at 720p on my IPP11. Wish I could do 1080p like everyone talks about, let alone higher res.

Wow ! 500MBPS of Internet Speed !! Holy Cow !! That is like a Super Rocket Speed !!
yes here we have up to 1000mbs, but still if youtube by default ipad pro is 480p..
On macs/iphones still is no issues but on the new iPP i dont know why

My 2018 IPP 11" defaults to 720p. Still not great but higher than 480p.

Some videos' 'Upper limit' is 720p. You'll get an indicator of the upper limit on the Quality Selection setting.

I only use safari, as I tend to not download apps and prefer adblocking as well.

Same goes for new iMacs though... I have a 27 inch 5k display, yet youtube's max resolution is 1080p. It's silly to own several thousand USD of high end devices that only display resolutions from almost 20 years ago.

explain it now, why if iOS/iPadOS 14 has VP9 support for Safari, they still cant play 4K youtube? What's even more confusing is why iPhone can actually play few 4K HDR videos, but iPad cant? I mean both OS'ms have been update at the same time pretty much with the same version, what gives??

i know ios below 14 did not support VP9 and apple/youtube codec differences. But now that VP9 is there in OS 14, why doesnt 4K work anyway. Are we to expect an update from youtube app or what??

This is for Apple TV but the YouTube team said that 4K support there will be out soon -

I would think an iPad update would also be in the works.

yeh let's hope so. I wish people would educate themselves a little more as it seems there just isnt much talk about this. And most tell things like well, it's not so bad, not big difference 4k and 1080, 4k is only mean for tvs, isnt it? We all deserve better, especially knowing the price you must pay for these high end devices.

I guess im lucky i only bought an ipad recently, can't imagine the frustration if i bought it 2 years ago and had to live with blurred out/pixelated youtube lol. Still, all the hype for OS 14 VP9 support was ruined, never before had i checked my phone for an update every 10 minutes.

Also I trust everyone who does realise the quality ripoff are sending feedback both to Apple and Youtube so they get their S! together. They can do better than push more ads and invent new software gimmicks instead of focusing on things that matter.

I don't think sending feedback to Apple would matter - it's a Google app feature issue, not an iPadOS problem. And I haven't found 1080p to be blurry or pixelated on my 12.9 Pro.

It’s frustrating because I’ve had the iPhone X, XS Max and now 11 pro max and all are capable of 1440p yet they have all been capped at 1080p the same resolution I could play on my 2014 iPhone 6 Plus. Likewise I got my iPad Pro 10.5 in 2017 and now my 11 inch iPad Pro both capped at 1080p.

Am I missing somethin here? The iPads don’t have 4K panels, so how can they display 4K?
