I was wondering if anybody could help.

I have an M1 Mac mini connected to an HDR enabled monitor.

Youtube has NEVER worked in HDR in Safari for me. Youtube DOES work in HDR in Chrome for me.

I've changed my User Agent to Chrome-Windows, enabled VP9 codec and HDR in 'Experimental Features' but nothing works to get HDR to play in Safari. Battery settings don't apply as I'm using a Mac mini.

Any ideas? macOS 12.3.1 and Safari 15.4
I accidentally discovered that YouTube works in HDR on safari with Mac OS 12.4. Not sure if this was there before as I updated from 12.3.1 this morning. I have a Mac mini 2018 connected to Benq HDR monitor.

If the display preferences-->color profile are set to default of your monitor (in my case its the model name) then safari won't detect HDR in YouTube. Once I set it to Rec.2020 or Display P3, basically a wider color gamut. I refresh safari YouTube page and I get HDR from Full HD to 4k.
I just watched couple of videos with stats for nerds on. I could see the changes instantly and its simply amazing.

this is odd, it somehow started working again, i did play around with the display color profile setting it to 'Rec.2020 Gamma 2.4' and then to 'Rec. ITU-R BT.2020-1' and then back to Display P3, and it somehow now work in all three color spaces, but P3 is my default colorspace, and it wasn't working in that one earlier today, also, some videos claimen to be hdr arn't and then are in chrome somehow, but then again not. tested it with costa rica video, that one is hdr all browsers now. but this one is not, not even in chrome:

Some videos are misleading title. They graded the video with HDR, but exported to 709 colour space only. Fake HDR video.

Tip for you: check the stats:

Mine works in chrome. It's never worked in safari. Annoying as I don't like chrome and prefer to use safari.

okay, the issue on my mac is found, the bug is in either in macos (most likely) or my display how they handle color spaces/rfr (it's an LG UltraGear, so I don't think so).

Anyways, I found that when the display goes to sleep, which happens a lot with a connected laptop when i'm awfk, macos resets my preset refresh rate (165Hz) to a lower value or even switches back to variable refresh rate (48Hz to 165Hz*). it's at this point, if i then try to play a hdr video on youtube or stream from netflix or some such, hdr becomes unavailable. Though my fix for this, is suprisingly simple, switch the monitor to full HDR mode using the checkbox in macOS settings and back again, so it esentially re-affirms the set color space, Display P3, then all of a sudden on all of my browsers*, HDR comes back on while in non-HDR mode but inside a wide enough color space.

So my thinking is, because the display goes to sleep and then comes back, website's may be unable to properly read the color space until i force it to hdr mode and back to non-hdr with wide color space...

(*even in Safari, Safari Technology Preview, and the new webkit browser Orion, which basically is Safari)

@TinyMito yes indeed that dubai video seems to be fake hdr.
