Did you read the story?

"The standard 1080p video quality option will remain available to all YouTube users."
Well I don’t have a 1080p option in safari. What say you?

Yes, you're missing that it's a higher bitrate option.

I've had this for a little while so I guess they'd just been testing it on my account.
I don’t see it in safari. Where is this 1080p option?

The way they phrase it the bitrate may be the same and they just add a local sharpening filter and/or AI-driven detail enhancement. ;)
Yeh. I'm waiting for more information you know. Maybe they decided to actually increase the bitrate so high motion videos look good lol

I could have sworn that I've been able to watch 4K YouTube content in the YouTube iOS app in the past. Am I not remembering this correctly or did they dumb it down to 1080p?

I'm sure 4K used to be available too - but I could be wrong. I don't watch too much YouTube on iOS/iPad OS. Mostly on AppleTV.

Honestly, YouTube Premium is the only streaming service I find value in day-after-day. YouTube creators put out so much quality content across such a wide array of subjects and interests. I find myself watching YouTube on my Apple TV more than Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Prime, and HBO Max combined.
Same here, I always come off learning more from YouTube than any other streaming app. Especially, if you're a busy person that's always on-the-go.

There are a lot of compelling reasons to get YouTube premium over most other streaming services, I would sooner pay for YouTube than I would for Netflix.
That said, I think the high bitrate 1080p option should not only be free, it should be the default.

You should have one in the app, which I guess all YouTube users are free to use.

The reason likely is that the app allows them better DRM control.
And ad revenue by tracking your use of the app

Even when I paid for the subscription they would refuse to automatically play 1080p or even 720p on a gigabit connection. Since then I just use safari, sponsorblock, vinegar(removes youtube ads). With this configuration the only thing you are missing is downloads, which you can do yourself. Additionally vinegar lets you play audio only on youtube videos. So actually you are losing by paying.

The ads are just killing me on YouTube so I guess I’m gonna have to go Premium sooner or later.

People using ad blockers - please don’t. When you use an ad blocker, the content provider doesn’t get any revenue — but when you use YouTube Premium, the content providers *do* get revenue. That’s what you’re paying for.
Also on the price — YouTube Premium is a family subscription.

If Americans think the price is bad just take a look at the pricing over here - £15.99 a MONTH just to skip ads and listen offline/in the background?!?!? That's $19.68; just under TWENTY DOLLARS a MONTH

How long before Apple reject the next YouTube app update? System feature like SharePlay can’t be put behind the paywall on iOS. This was the issue with Picture and Picture and instead of making it a Premium feature on iOS, they had to turn it on for all users since it was a system feature when it came out of beta.
PiP still doesn’t work or does it? I only use YouTube from safari and PiP doesn’t work.

I make ads specifically for YouTube so I enjoy watching them... if they're good quality content. It's a Wild West out there sometimes.
