Is this a serious question?
This is one of those things that's not at all sexy, but an absolute minimum requirement, like having a working keyboard or hard drive. My wife recently paid an extra $700 to get a Mac laptop guaranteed to be powerful enough to do virtual backgrounds. Many people remote working now spend their entire day on Zoom. We'd be unable to work remotely and unemployed without it.

Remember though that it's still somewhat uncommon for people to be supplying their own personal computer for their professional work. I realize it's more common in some areas, particularly freelance work, but most corporate folks are using company-supplied gear.

Some of us are given work allowances and can decide on what we want to buy in terms of computers. Others simply want a personal computer that can also double as a work computer as well.

Sure - I didn't say this didn't exist - I said it remained somewhat uncommon, particularly in a corporate environment.

All that aside, I think it would be foolish for anyone to buy an M1 Mac at the moment for mission-critical stuff necessary for their work. Too many unknowns as of today which should become much clearer in coming weeks.

Ooooh, controversial!! ?

I know Apple said they’ve managed to improve the picture quality through software, but that’s been torn to pieces on here so it will be interesting to see the pictures & reviews.
I've seen one review video that showed the difference and the M1 camera quality was definitely improved. I think that it was The Tech Guy's review.

Just tried Zoom on my M1 Air and I can confirm that it works with Rosetta. It was so smooth that I'd never even have realised that it wasn't native if I hadn't been told.

Do you have the 8 or 16GB MBA? On my 2020 i5 8GB MBA, things slow down and the fan runs fast when on a video call - does performance get throttled (given lack of fan) during a call on the M1 MBA?

Quick question, not very related with zoom though.

I can access work outlook and office apps on iphone/ipad - with the support of Microsoft Authenticator.

Not on macOS though, as per safety restrictions - only through Citrix.

is it possible on M1, to download iOS outlook and Authenticator and run as it would be on ipad?

It's a 16GB MBA. I only ran a quick test to see if it worked. I didn't notice any slowdown, but wasn't really testing for that.

I just downloaded and installed on a 8GiB M1MBA.

Download (100Mib/s here) to opening via Rosetta in less than 2 mins.

Solid camera and I'm in the dark.

Have 5h of Zoom meetings tomorrow so I am glad that it is working well. I need to share screen at 8am tomorrow, but I'm still writing the agenda. Need to download Office now.

Has someone managed to try using virtual backgrounds with Zoom? I need to recommend a new laptop for some staff, but that is a dealbreaker..

Currently on Zoom on my M1 MBA - I am a teacher so I am hosting. Works good so far, only issue is I am unsure how to share computer sound with my class/zoom session. I had it working just fine on my 2017 MBP. But in my 'more' dropdown menu, the option to share computer sound is gone.

Any ideas?

i don't, but i am hoping to hear some positive news on this front. this is a big issue with using an iPad...one can't share audio from "other apps" at the same time as with talking/conversing in Zoom. i was assuming it was an iOS limitation, not an apple silicon one!

Update - I figured it out somehow. changing my audio settings to enable zoom. Works great. To note: I am using side car to zoom my shared screen, plus have chat, music and additional files open. Computer does not seem to be bugged by it where my MBP fan would turn on.

Was worried for a second :)

This question has been posted twice with no answer definite answer. I would like to add additional elements to the question

Would anyone comment on the following scenario:
- Virtual background without a green screen
- Share a PowerPoint/Keynote/Prezi presentation with videos, sound, and other multimedia elements
- while hosting a Zoom meeting with 100 to 999 participants

That's my current set up. I do virtual tours using Google Earth, Google Arts & Culture, and other tools.

Virtual backgrounds work (at least the default ones included with Zoom). I can't make a judgement on whether it works worse/better than usual as I haven't used them in the past.

Cant comment on the others, sorry.

It may be the minority, but it's a lot more common than you might think, particularly among management.

Yup. The company I work for encourages BYOD. Bring your own device. While we have 200,000+ employees world wide, in the US about half of the 40k use their own device as a portal to work. We support Macs, Windows and Chromebooks using VM Ware Horizon. This doesn’t even count the number of folks who are now forced to use personal phones after being kicked out of the office.

I seem to be doing 10-20h/week of meetings on Zoom/Meet. Never have any issues with Zoom, not even with 400 students. Meet doesn't work well with Safari, so I keep Chrome installed just for that.
