Limited Memory configs for M4 MacBooks

I was debating between a MacMini and a MacBook and noticed that the M4-Pro can't be configured with 64GB of memory like the MacMini can. On the M4-Max it's even weirder as the binned version of the M3-Max doesn't allow configuring higher memory. The MacMini with either the binned M4-Pro or full...

How Much Memory for an iMac?

I currently use a 27" 2020 iMac with 3.8 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i7, AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT 8 GB, and 128 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 RAM. When/if the M4 iMacs are released in November, if they're like the present iteration of the 24" iMac, the maximum RAM would be 24 GB. So would that be enough? I'm an...

Seriously? 8GB used to be enough.. it's becoming less and less the case

That doesn't even add up near to 8GB :D Meanwhile, Apple still sells base models just shy off a thousand with 8GB equipped. I gotta say, owning this laptop since new it's probably frozen on me less than 10 times. So overall great stability.. however messages like these worry me for the future.

MP 6,1 Mac Pro 6.1 Peripherals Freezing with New Ram

Hey all. I recently purchased a used Mac Pro 6.1 and wanted to do some upgrades to it, namely CPU and RAM. I swapped the 6 core for the 10 core E5-2690v2 without any issues. Today, I took out the original 16GB of RAM and swapped it for 64GB of RAM I bought new on eBay (this is the kit I...

Recommended to get bigger SSD when choosing more RAM? / Hibernate on Mac

Hey all, I'm curious how hibernate works on the MacBook Pros... I'm used to Windows reserving the amount of RAM in Gigabytes on the SSD, so that it can copy the content from the RAM to the SSD when hibernating. How does that work on the MacBook Pros / in MacOs? I'm about to buy a MacBook Pro...

    Struggling 2018 mini

I have a 2018 intel i7 mini running Sonoma 14.4.1 with 32 gigs of ram that I purchased 4 years ago when they had the 2020 refresh. It always ran smoothly enough until a few months ago when it started to struggle with seemingly simple workloads. This has slowed down my productivity significantly...

Problem: Replacing faulty maxed-out MBP with M3 Max, trying to understand RAM requirement, no equivalence tables seem to exist. Spec (OLD) late 2019 16" MBP, 2.4GHz 8‑core Intel i9, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M w/ 8GB GDDR6, 64GB 2666MHz DDR4, 1TB SSD) Spec (NEW) 2024 16" MBP M3 Max, 16-core CPU...

    Disabling memory compression

I wanted to play around with disabling memory compression as I imagine this adds some CPU overhead. I'd like to leave swap enabled. I upgraded the SSD so swap to SSD should be pretty fast. You used to be able to disable memory compression from recovery with: nvram boot-args=vm_compressor=1 The...

XProtect stealing RAM randomly every day? (xprotectremediatorsheepswap)

Is anyone else experiencing the issue where xprotectremediatorsheepswap is using taking a huge amount of RAM every day? Since Sonoma 14.3.1, this process would pop up and start eating up 100GB of RAM and making >50GB of swaps into SSD. This issue also seems to have affected many other users...

    iMac 27" 2020 Ram Upgrade + Issue

Hello, I'm looking for a little bit of advice and recommandation. Basically, I've bought this iMac 27" in August 2020, and almost immediately purchased additional Ram (16Gbx2) on Amazon at the time. Recently, the iMac kept crashing randomly, without any evidence of what was causing the issue...

Used iMac with weird memory config

Wanting to grab a piece of history before they fade from memory (and the market) I bought a used 2017 iMac 27" 5K. It had a rather odd memory load out of 56GB. Ran Apple diagnostics at the seller's house, and everything checked out so I paid up and brought it home. About this Mac shows a rather...

Help me decide: Base vs 36 GB

Hi guys, I need help choosing a configuration for my new Mac M3 Pro. I'm thinking about getting the M3 Pro 16" base model (18/512), but I'm wondering if that will be enough to support my work and college assignments for the next 5 years or so. Do you think I should upgrade to 36/1TB

RAM: Apple Silicon 8GB = 16GB Intel in Topaz AI?

I was looking at the system requirements for Topaz AI because I haven't upgraded to the newer versions and was curious if they have a build now for Apple Silicon as I have a 14" M3 Max 16/40 64GB on order. I'm looking to upgrade some of my professional tools to avoid the performance impact of...

Before you buy a new Mac with just 8GB RAM, know this.

I've "upgraded" from a 16" MBP M1 Pro with 16GB RAM and 512 SSD to a 15" MacBook Air M2 with just 8GB RAM and 512 SSD. If I had to believe 90% of people on here, my wallet would be $200 lighter due to a 16GB RAM upgrade. I'm constantly running Safari with 3-5 tabs, Chrome with 5-10 tabs and 10...
